I have to admit, this show may not necessarily rank high amongst so many high-end criteria that critics like to gauge any show against (and I'm hard innocent on that front too), but I'm hooked on this show.
I enjoyed the first season, but expected a slow decline in the second season. We've had the surprise, the introduction of our sociopathic lead, and the myriad of self-absorbed self-denying narcissists in their rich bubble, watching the wall all come down. The difference is the excellent application of social media which many writers have found difficult to incoporate in storytelling without ruining everything.
The characters are mostly obnoxious as ever, yet they can also be uncomfortably endearing. That's the hook! The story of the sisters Ellie & Delilah is engrossing & tragic in how it plays out, whilst that of the Quinns is disturbing.
Joe (or Will as he has 'disguised' himself as) is very charming & frightening as our omnipotent viewer watches how the story will enfold, knowing something bad is going to happen, BUT is Joe actually a good man who has trapped himself, or a sociopath with moments of caring? We'll never really know.
Set now in Los Angeles, maybe a more apt setting for our lead character. I don't want to give anything away, but really want to recommend this show to everyone. It's a contemporary & timely commentary on the current social media world, and I find a lot to enjoy. Fine, the acting may not be the greatest, and the characters can be a little too much, but maybe that's the point.
I feel trapped in Joe's glass book cage, having to watch this and enjoying this more, or maybe we're all watching them trapped in the glass cage, whilst we are peering in from the outside.
Just put your feet up and watch this show, you'll enjoy it very much. I look forward to the next season, which I'll start soon.
