It is fair to say that in its later years, George Miller‘s Mad Max franchise truly has become a saga. The term is used now boldly and often in the marketing for Furiosa, a film which marks the 79-year-old filmmaker’s fifth sojourn into the glories and horrors of the Wasteland. Yet what once was a series of standalone adventures in the life of Max Rockatansky and his post-apocalyptic travails has become something altogether grander thanks to 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road. For it was in this film that Miller introduced viewers to a new and instantly iconic protagonist, the Master of the War Rig and Scourge of the Citadel, Imperator Furiosa (played unforgettably by Charlize Theron).
By the end of the movie, it was Furiosa’s triumph that stuck with viewers as she ascended to the Citadel’s throne of power, promising a new and hopefully fairer matriarchal...

Viewers will soon have one fewer barrier between watching something on Prime Video and shopping for new merchandise on Amazon.
In one of the company’s most predictable moves after rolling out an ad-supported tier for all Prime Video customers who don’t pay to upgrade, Amazon is introducing several new ad formats ahead of its Upfront Presentation next week. Prime Video customers will soon be able to see ads for products, and then purchase those products without ever having to leave the Amazon ecosystem thanks to the launch of new pause ads, ad carousels, and trivia ads that will be found on multiple platforms.
Key Details: Ad carousels will offer customers multiple, related products for them to browse during Prime Video commercial breaks. Pause ads have already made their way to streamers like Paramount+, Max and Hulu. Prime Video has over 200 million customers, and a recent survey found that...

"Fallout" is the smash success Amazon Studios has been waiting for. The show, based on the popular video game series of the same name, has become one of the biggest hits to date on Prime Video. Amazon has revealed that the series is now the second-most-watched show in the history of the streaming service, trailing only the mega-budgeted "Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power."
According to Variety, "Fallout" was streamed by 65 million viewers during its first 16 days of release. Amazon made the choice to release the entire first season all at once on April 10. That's closer to the traditional Netflix binge model, rather than the week-to-week episode model that Prime Video has employed in recent years. That may have attracted more viewership in the early going, and that makes the show one of Prime Video's biggest hits ever out of the gate. As such, it's not surprising that...

A classic Warner Bros. IP is headed to Netflix with a reimagining from one of the studio’s top TV producers. In a competitive situation with multiple bidders, the streamer has landed Scooby-Doo! The Live-Action Series, from Greg Berlanti’s Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television, where the company is based, sources tell Deadline.
Written by Josh Appelbaum & Scott Rosenberg (Cowboy Bebop) based on characters created by Hanna-Barbera, Scooby-Doo! is a live-action update of the popular cartoon.
In a tough TV marketplace, the drama project garnered interest from top buyers, ending up at Netflix with a premium, script-to-series commitment, sources said. Reps for Netflix and Wbtv declined comment.

Greg Berlanti and Netflix are going for a ride in the Mystery Machine.
The streaming giant is near a deal for a live-action TV series based on the beloved Hanna-Barbera animated cartoon Scooby-Doo. The project has a script-to-series commitment at Netflix, meaning if the script is well received, it would trigger a straight-to-series order for what is considered a live-action update of the classic cartoon.
Reps for Netflix, producers Warner Bros. Television and Berlanti Productions declined to comment, as a deal has not yet formally closed.
Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg — who previously adapted Cowboy Bebop for Netflix and High Fidelity for Hulu — are attached to pen the script and exec produce via their Midnight Radio banner’s André Nemec and Jeff Pinkner. Disney’s “Space Mountain” has been reignited.
Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec, whose credits including “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” and the two Michael Bay-produced live-action “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” films, have been hired to write a new screenplay based on the beloved Disney Parks attraction, TheWrap has learned.
Jonathan Eirich from Rideback is producing the feature, along with Joby Harold (who wrote an earlier iteration of the project) and Tory Tunnell of Safehouse. Ryan Halprin of Rideback is executive producing.
The original Space Mountain opened as the centerpiece of the Magic Kingdom’s version of Tomorrowland in 1975, part of the expansive Walt Disney World resort outside of Orlando, Fla. The ride is known for its strikingly graphic design — comprised of a cone and spires that jut heavenward (and can be seen as part of John Hench’s early concept art) — and its thrilling, coaster-in-the-dark aesthetic. Disney is once again trying to make a "Space Mountain" movie happen. This is one of the company's most cherished theme park rides as a staple of both Disneyland and Disney World for decades. Now, a pair of new writers have been brought on board to try and crack the code with this long-gestating adaptation. Whether or not they will be the ones to get it across the finish line is another question entirely.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec have been tapped to write the latest iteration of "Space Mountain" for Disney. Plot details are being kept under wraps for the time being. Applebaum and Nemec are known for their work on Amazon's wildly expensive series "Citadel," as well as Netflix's live-action "Cowboy Bebop" series, which was canceled after just one season. In a letter to shareholders, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy offered a refreshing dose of clarity regarding the status of Prime Video.
Just how big is Prime Video’s customer base? For years, the only way to answer this question was via speculation, as Amazon has steadfastly refused to make data like subscriber totals or the profitability of its streaming segment public for years. But in a recent letter to Amazon shareholders, company CEO Andy Jassy revealed that Prime Video had 200 million customers, an impressive number but one that comes with an important caveat.
Prime Video’s 200 million subscribers put it behind only Netflix in terms of total customers. Every Amazon Prime subscriber gets access to Prime Video as part of their account. Jassy also suggested that Prime Video isn’t profitable on its own yet. 30-Day Free Trial $8.99+ / month amazon.com

“Fallout,” the post-apocalyptic series debuting this week on Amazon Prime, is expected to relocate to California for its second season, thanks to $25 million in California tax credits.
The California Film Commission announced Monday that it has awarded $152 million in tax incentives to a dozen TV shows.
The list also includes two shows from Ryan Murphy, “Dr. Odyssey” on ABC and “Grotesquerie” on FX, as well as “NCIS: Origins,” a prequel show due out next season on CBS.
“Fallout” has the largest budget of any of the shows, at $153 million in qualified expenditures for the season. The first season was produced mostly in New York, with some filming in Utah.
Amazon was also awarded another $14.6 million for an untitled “Task Force” show, while Warner Bros. Discovery was awarded $20.2 million for a show called “Latitude” and $12.2 million for “The Pitt,” a hospital show starring Noah Wyle and set in Pittsburgh.

Just days before its debut, Fallout looks to be assured a second season thanks to a $25 million tax credit from California.
Officially, Amazon has not said yet that the Prime Video series is coming back, but, with some hints from executive producers Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan recently, it is pretty clear the money is doing the talking here. Receiving one of the largest allocations ever from the program for a relocating series, the post-apocalyptic drama is among a dozen shows awarded $152 million in incentives.

Avatar: The Last Airbender is heading into its second season with its third showrunner at the helm.

Co-executive producer Christine Boylan and exec producer Jabbar Raisani — both of whom were hired by Kim — will take over as the drama’s third showrunners for the previously announced second and third seasons.
Sources say Kim’s intention was to lay the foundation for season one of Avatar: The Last Airbender after stepping in for the beloved franchise’s creators. Given the long turnaround time in crafting the series — Netflix ordered it in 2018, the creators left in late 2020 and the show didn’t debut until February 2024 — sources say Kim was ready to move on to new opportunities.

At least one Amazon Prime member is furious over the ecommerce company’s move to start playing ads in Prime Video programming — unless customers pay an extra monthly fee.
A lawsuit seeking class-action status accused Amazon of false advertising and deceptive practices because Prime Video now serves commercials by default.
“For years, people purchased and renewed their Amazon Prime subscriptions believing that they would include ad-free streaming,” the lawsuit says. “But last month, Amazon changed the deal. To stream movies and TV shows without ads, Amazon customers must now pay an additional $2.99 per month… This is not fair, because these subscribers already paid for the ad-free version; these subscribers should not have to pay an additional $2.99/month for something that they already paid for.”
The case was filed on behalf of Wilbert Napoleon, a resident of Eastvale, Calif., who says he’s a Prime member. “Plaintiff brings this case for...

Forget all about Anne Hathaway, Jim Sturgess, Rafe Spall and co. That lot are yesterday’s chip paper. The stars of the 2011 One Day film have been superseded by this new bunch, now bringing David Nicholls’ hit 2009 romance novel to life for a new 14-episodes Netflix series. Adapted by Wild Rose and Three Girls screenwriter Nicole Taylor, One Day is a bittersweet love story set across two decades. It’s the story of Emma and Dexter, whose first night together at their university graduation sparks almost two decades of will-they-won’t-they romance.

While other media companies have been paring back content spending, Amazon shelled out more than $2 billion more in 2023 for TV shows, movies and music than it did a year earlier.
Amazon’s total video and music expense last year was $18.9 billion, representing a 14% increase from $16.6 billion in 2022, according to the company’s 10-K annual report filed Friday. The figures include licensing and production costs associated with content offered in Amazon Prime memberships, and costs associated with digital subscriptions and sold or rented content. Amazon’s bigger outlay for content came even amid Hollywood’s twin WGA and SAG-AFTRA protracted strikes last year that halted most TV and movie productions for months.
With $18.9 billion in content costs in 2023, Amazon is a bigger content buyer than Netflix — although unlike Netflix, Amazon spends a big chunk of change on music licensing in addition to TV and movies. For 2023, Netflix reported $12.6 billion in...

I suppose there’s only so much that can be done in the action genre that is new or unique, and so we’re stuck revisiting the big hits of decades past, only to come up with remakes that have no original marrow in their bones. In the ever-changing realm of entertainment, where we often find solace and inspiration in the past, it’s becoming common to see people dabble in the old to bring something new that is inevitably unworthy. It’s just got me wondering: Is there a limit to creativity, or are we simply stuck in a loop of nostalgia now that we’re getting older and (not to be too harsh but) boring? The recent exploration of the early 2000s vault brings us to Mr. & Mrs. Smith, a small-screen adaptation inspired by a modern classic from back then. While the original film delighted audiences with...

When Mad Max: Fury Road was released by Warner Bros. back in 2015, Mad Max saga mastermind George Miller already had ideas for more Max Rockatansky stories and a prequel that would focus on the Furiosa character. Unfortunately, before he could move forward with any of them, his production company had to take WB to court over unpaid Fury Road earnings, an issue that slowed things down for years. The problem was finally resolved and now, nine years after Fury Road, the prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga has made its way through production and is set to reach theatres on May 24th. In anticipation of the film’s release, we have compiled a list of everything we know about this one – and you can check it out right here:
