Hu Du Men (1996)
Beautiful, funny, touching.
The story of Sum, a woman who plays male characters in the Cantonese Opera. The title refers to the line between between backstage and onstage, between real life and the character portrayed onstage. Sum blends her feminine and masculine traits in her extraordinary life wonderfully. She's famous onstage and off, takes on an apprentice, her husband wants to emigrate to Australia, her young daughter seems to be getting into a lesbian relationship, and her past is creeping up on her. Beautiful choreography. Funny. Touching. Excellent.
Jui kuen (1978)
great scenes
Just enough plot to take Jackie from one fight to the next. Several scenes you have to rewind and see again, and some of his training methods you've got to try yourself to see exactly how painful they must be. Except for miserable white-on-white subtitles (but who needs to know what they're saying, anyway?), it's a great flick.
