Salem's Lot (1979)
You Can't Get Much Lamer Than This
After 20 years, I decided to read the book again. Great story! King delivers the goods again. But, WHAT HAPPENED TO THE MOVIE??? It's no wonder that Stephen King isn't really keen on having his movies made...especially after this one.
Besides cashing in on every TV series actors at the time, this movie is tired from the get-go. There are major continuity problems... dark stormy skies in one scene and nice sunny day in another. Were they in different parts of the country? The funeral scene, for example, is windy and the sun becomes obscured by clouds, BUT, when David Soul and the doc are driving down the road, skies are blue and the trees are not blowing around. What's up with the lighting? 5:00am in the moring and the sun is pouring into the room? And don't get me started on the "freeze frame"& cliffhanger music as a commercial looms upon us. Holy Batman, guys - Biff, Bam, Boom! There are tons of other errors. I could go on and on. The ONLY redeeming character is when Mr. Barlow, who is based on the character in Nasferatu, shows his ghouly face.
Beyond that, what happens to the characters when a movie is initially planned out? In this one, they appeared to have deconstructed every character and reassembled them to make them "more interesting". Did they just toss out the whole dialog and create stuff on the fly? David Soul, as Ben Mears, is "too cool" to be the Ben in the book. Ben was haunted and not particularly handsome. Straker was not evil in form as James Mason played the part. None of the characters seemed to come from the book!
Be glasd that it is only time that is wasted on this movie and not your money, too. Read the book. It is MUCH scarier than this made-for-TV joke.
The War of the Worlds (1953)
Beyond Classic
This movie STILL scares me! I want run into the bathroom and turn on the fan like I used to do when I was a kid to block out the sound of the spaceships as they fire their ray guns. Help Mommy!
Like many others commenting on WotW, I feel that the movie is a classic. It's the quintessential alien attack movie and it relys on suspense instead of gory horror to keep it exciting. My mom always said that people who use profanity are those who can't think of anything clever to say. I think that directors and producers that rely on gore are those that can't think of anything clever to film.
Get this one on DVD to add to your collection. It's worth the money!
Star Trek: Voyager (1995)
Sad To See It Go
I'm not really a Star Trek FAN... I've watched episodes over the years, didn't like Bab5 (who was the vampire clown? i could never take the show seriously), TNG got a bit too much with the bravado (Picard's "make it so"), but I grew to like the Voyager series. I think that the Captain and crew give a good mix of personal stories plus battles and adventures. Some very thought provoking episodes broaching science and humanity have been exceptionally well written. I happen to have liked the episodes depicting the evolution of Seven of Nine back into humanity. So the series has a broad mix of story lines that I have enjoyed and I will hate to see them end.
B*A*P*S (1997)
Come On! This is Hilarious!
This film is not a big headliner but it has some awesomely funny moments. Nothing funnier than when these two girls visit their local club called The Gold Tooth and when they go in they set off the metal detectors when they smile showing their full array of gold caps. Halle Berry is Beautiful (with a capital B) and is endearing as Nisi and Natalie Desselle is 'da bomb' as the blustery best friend, Mickey. The hairstyles themselves are worth seeing this video! Mickey displays the "BOO YOW" hairstyle with aplomb. Who else would try to open a Hair Salon/Restaurant but these two women dreamers? One of my favorite flicks, I advise you to check it out.
