Big City Blues (1997)
Unwatchably Awful
This film describes the experiences of a couple of hit men (one of them Burt Reynolds), a prostitute, and two drag queens over the interval of a few hours on one night in Miami. The convergent storylines eventually bring all the people together at one place and time. The movie was mildly entertaining, but the big problem was that everything happens at night and many scenes were literally under-exposed to the point that it was impossible to see what was happening. In a few scenes you can actually see where they tried to "stretch" the developing process to save the images. Somebody didn't know how to operate a movie camera. Amazing that this film was even released!
Men of Means (1998)
Oscar material?? You've got to be kidding.
This is the lowest form of "B" movies. The acting is bad, the continuity is terrible, there are ridiculous coincidences throughout the movie, and the "hero" murders about 7 people, including the father of his "love interest." Not only that, but the copy I rented wasn't even in focus! Avoid this film at all costs.
Nemesis 4: Death Angel (1996)
Something wrong here...
Nemesis 4 follows in the footsteps of the previous two sequels to the original Nemesis. It follows the adventures of female hardbody / warrior Alex (played by Sue Price). This time she is given one final assignment (kill yet another victim) before ending her career as a professional assassin. Very little happens in this extremely talky, apparently near-zero budget film, except for almost-constant nudity on the part of Alex, and some slimy "android" gore. Something happened here. All three sequels were shot at the same time, from what I have heard, yet it took nearly four years for this installment to get released to video. I could swear that a male double was used for much of the full-body views of the nearly-naked Alex, and Alex's voice was always dubbed in, even when it should not have been necessary. The actual running time is barely over an hour. Did something happen to Sue Price, making it necessary for extensive reshooting or re-editing? Watch this movie, and see if YOU can figure out what went wrong. One can only hope this is the last film in this series.
The Outsider (1997)
90 Minutes of Mindless Fun
This movie is basically an update of Westworld. In the year 2028, a fantasy park with part-human androids allows real humans to vent their violent tendencies. Someone sabotages the park and the androids go berserk. The movie quickly goes from dark horror to near-slapstick comedy. With less than a minute's editing, this movie could easily get a PG-13 and maybe even a "G" rating (no kidding!). A good film for 90 minutes of mindless fun, suitable for the whole family if brief nudity is not minded. Watch for "Joe Isuzu" in a role remarkably close to his TV ads!
Total Force (1996)
The Worst
An unbelievably bad, amateur quality action/adventure film shot at the docks and warehouses of Long Beach, CA. Be sure to take some dramamine before watching this one, because the jerky camera style of filming is taken to new extremes. Standard terrorist / mad scientist / corrupt government officials (including the President) plot. Watch for the incredibly inappropriate use of NASA and Desert Storm stock footage. This film approaches Ed Wood in ineptness. Richard Lynch - your career is over.
