Josh Kirby: Time Warrior! Chap. 1: Planet of the Dino-Knights (1995)
Soon to be a cult classic
This film surprised me. The cheezy plotline and the really corny dialogue fit right in because the lines were pretty much out of a "how to write bad sci-fi" book. But since the lines were delivered in a very tongue-in-cheek style, it's clear it's a spoof on bad sci-fi. Weird storyline and the special effects are nothing to write home about, but it fits. I enjoyed it, but others might not. Still...it's fun, but you do have to watch all 6 or else it's no good because you don't get the full story.
Camp Nowhere (1994)
Way better than it seems
Camp Nowhere is, if nothing else, a wonderful guide for actors on how to play many parts in one movie. Christopher Lloyd does a wonderful job playing at least 8 different characters. Each is unique and believable as well as wonderfully comic. Jonathan Jackson, best known for his role on General Hospital, plays at least two other characters besides Mud Himmel. Both do a wonderful job.
The movie itself is always teetering on the edge of formula fare, but somehow manages to avoid falling in. Each time I expect a formula solution, the movie surprises me with a new and funny twist. Comic timing is wonderful and young Nathan Cavaleri, who plays Steve, is the one on the guitar in "Summertime Blues" and "Working on It."
Watch this movie!
The Black Cauldron (1985)
Great film, but not appropriate for kids.
I saw this film at 6 when it came out in the theatres. It scared the heck out of me, but looking back, I realize that the quality of the animation is what caused me to be so scared. Now that I'm older, and perhaps wiser, and having read the books this movie is taken from, I realize how good this movie really is.
There is the standard Disney "happy ending" fare, but what surprised me is the closeness that the movie kept to the story, which is amazing for a Disney kiddie flick. The animation is almost anime and comporable to screen shots of FF8. (FF8 is short for Final Fantasy 8, a playstaion game series that is very popular.)
Don't let kids younger than 7 or 8 watch it as it is very scary, but if you liked the scenes in sleeping beauty where the knight fights the evil fairy queen/dragon there is much to like about this film. I bought a copy the first day it came out.
