Hakusen nagashi (1996)
great high school series
This show is extremely nostalgic, which is weird because i went to high school in America and this show takes place in Japan (and is in Japanese). The traditions are different, but the feelings seem to be universal. I was impressed at how well the show presents believable and realistic high school kids. The kids look like high school kids and have real high school kid problems. Watch this show, then watch an episode of 90210 to get an idea!
Like all Japanese drama, this show can be incredibly sappy (endless freeze frames as the two destined lovers pass on different trains and all the standard stock shots), but go with it and you won't be disappointed.
Maryam (2002)
best film about race in america in a long time
This film was simply fantastic and my favorite from Roger Ebert's 3rd Annual Overlooked Film Fest. The girl who plays Maryam gives an incredible performance and i can't say enough good things about the script. It was an excellent tale about what it was like to be a regular American teen who happened to be of Iranian descent during the hostage crisis in '79. This film manages to be poignant and thought-provoking about race relations in America without beating the audience over the head with the "SpikeLee Stick". good and good for you.
Xiang Gang qi an: Xi xue gui li wang (1994)
Un-PC romp
You just have to love Category III films from Hong Kong. This movie had me laughing from beginning to end. It's the story of a man who's family is torn apart when his wife borrows from the triads. This movie is DEFINITELY not for everyone. But it was really refreshing to see a movie that is not constrained by the bounds of good taste :)
The Mummy (1999)
A BAD BAD movie
Do you know why Hollywood makes bad movies? I will tell you. They make bad movies because apparently no one cares. $47 million?! Are you kidding me? A) The special effects were not special. The opening shot in Prince of Egypt looked more realistic than the opening shot in this movie. The sand effects just looked awful. And the story? FORGET IT.
MEH MEH MEH. I want my money back
