Bill (2007)
Watch this movie before you go to bed. Or, before you go to work.
Funny thing. Two minutes into the movie, I thought: "American Beauty Light". After the movie I visit IMDb and the first comment that pops up is titled "American Beauty Light". And I actually believe it sums up the movie. Or rather: American Beauty Light with Humor.
I think I really enjoyed this movie, and like many have commented before me, Aaron Eckhart really does a good job as Bill. After recently having seen The Dark Knight and now this movie, I'm really starting to get a feeling this Eckhart guy is gonna make it big. He kind of rules. He looks like an actor and his voice is trustworthy. I have no clue as to why I'm writing this comment, other than the fact that I wish to express my deepest respect for Mr. Eckhart and also I think people should check out this movie when they get a chance.
So, bottom line: check it out. Please do.
King Kong (2005)
Gluteus Maximus is dead
I'll get right to the point. You know the story, and if you don't, then lucky you. A giant Gorilla falls in love with a pale human female beauty. And, get this, she's attracted to him as well.
Never mind.
This movie is three hours long. I went to the movies to see it, and if it weren't for all the special effects and the sound effects, I would have fallen asleep. Actually, it's possible to fall asleep for the first hour or so, because nothing really happens. After that, your butt falls asleep, and the movie just keeps on going.
In the end, it's over and you're glad cos you can go home and tell all your friends you went to see King Kong, and of course you tell them it ruled, because anything else would be stupid. Telling them it sucked, would mean you're banned from social life for a year or so. You don't show disrespect to Peter Jackson, and you shouldn't. He's a fine director and the movie is kind of okay, even though it isn't.
And why isn't it? Because it's too damn long. And because any scene that could be exaggerated, has been exaggerated.
The special effects are awesome, but is this what makes a movie? I think not. So, in the end, is it beauty kills the beast, or money kills the movie?
Kong is King, but he's got no phallus.
A Civil Action (1998)
Don't expect a happy ending, don't even expect the end
If you like the John Grisham novels-turned-into-film kind of movies with lots of lawyer talk and intriguing plots, this might seem like a movie for you. Think again, then go watch one of those movies you love.
Despite good acting, although I'm not sure I believe in John Travolta as a lawyer, this movie was a big disappointment when it ended. Probably, they should have re-arranged the story, by deleting the first 30 minutes of the movie and explained the plot with text, instead of doing that in the end instead.
This movie gives you no happy ending and when it does end, you want to see the sequel, only there is none, thank God.
Frankie and Johnny (1991)
Do you believe?
The first time I saw this movie, I fell in love. The second time around, I was already in love, watching it with my love who also fell in love and now we're all in love. All because of this movie.
Set in New York, the movie deals with loneliness, different ways of coping or letting go, it deals with love, the yearning for it and also the fear of it, this magical feeling you almost don't dare hope for. The simple but genuine approach to these important themes makes the story stand out and makes you want to believe, because deep inside you already do.
You can tell the movie is based on a play, primarily because of the special atmosphere created by the careful progression of the story, scene by scene, not to mention the wonderful and individual characters we get acquainted with. Both Michelle Pfeiffer and Al Pacino make outstanding performances and the on screen chemistry between the two is perfect.
This is an absolute must see for all you dreamers out there, and if you ever come across the play, you probably should check that out as well. Remember, the elephant must face the window and a VCR will never be a substitute for love. Sit down with this movie, and I promise you, from the first shot of the Greyhound accompanied by Terence Trent D'Arby's wonderful title track, you'll never want it to end.
Dogville (2003)
Too interesting
At first sight: Interesting. After a while: Annoying. In the end: Depressing.
If this movie had been made the exact same way by any other director than Lars Von Trier, it wouldn't have gotten good reviews. But who knows, maybe I'll like it in 20-30 years, lying on my deathbed.
I shake the magic eight ball: It is decidedly so.
Donnie Darko (2001)
You will never forget it
Not watching this movie, is the 8th deadly sin. In other words, this is a must see. You cannot be told about this movie, you have to see it for yourself. In short: rent it - no, buy it! - now!
His name is Donnie Darko. A weird guy at first sight. But wait 'til you see the inside. Dark. Darker. Darko.
Enough said. I enjoyed this very much, and I usually say: If Good Will Hunting is a disease (which it is not), this is the antidote.
Beauty (1998)
It works
A warm and touching movie. This is not really Beauty & The Beast revisited; the beast is not very ugly in this movie, but rather a freaky Jay Leno look-a-like. The Beauty is charming, but why does she have to have a boyfriend before she meets the beast, I wonder. But why wonder, when one can enjoy. The movie works and that's what counts.
Gerry (2002)
Truly inspirational
Briefly visiting New York City and came across a movie theater in West Houston street where they showed this movie which I had read about on the IMDB a few months ago. I went in and got a ticket.
The movie opens. A car. Some music. A road. Nothing happens, but I feel calm. Then nothing happens and I'm still calm and the images are beautiful. Someone in the audience laughs. Gerry (Casey Affleck) is on a big rock and has to jump down. It's not what you call action and it's not hilarious, but I laugh, still feeling calm. I start thinking about writing a book and maybe pursuing an artistic career and I feel calm. The movie ends. Blue screen with credits.
I go out in the streets of New York City and I suddenly feel dizzy and nauseated. Thank you Gerry. Maybe it was a gerry to go see it, if you know what I mean?
Highlights in the movie: The opening. / When the faces of Gerry & Gerry are zoomed in on and they walk just like a couple of camels. / When Gerry & Gerry are walking like two zombies and we get to see sunrise. / When Gerry & Gerry sit by the fire and Gerry talks about his failed game of Civilisation.
What I got out of this movie wasn't so much a plot or a story, but it made me want to create something and the way the camera captivates you and won't let you go in a very subtle and gentle way is amazing. I have no idea if I love this movie, but I certainly don't hate it. One of the reviewers said about this movie: "Don't sleep with anybody who hates this movie" and I agree.
This is a movie that I don't think ever will be released on DVD so do catch it when its in theatres 'cause this is one movie you just can't do without.
You'll remember Gerry no matter what.
Dahmer (2002)
A porridge of confusing flashbacks
Dahmer, a young confused man. Dahmer, a confusing movie. Granted, I had a few beers while watching the movie, but that doesn't explain why I got so bored by this flick.
Its flashbacks are nothing but confusing and annoying, and there's no real storyline with a beginning and an end, the only thing that made sense in the movie was the explaining text in the beginning and at the very end of the movie. The inbetween stuff, which would be the movie, is just boring images and a waste of time.
We never see actual murders, everything is just a bunch of insinuations. Sometimes you even just get a feeling that Dahmer's dreaming the entire thing, but you know he isn't, since it's
based on a true story and this actually happened, at least most of it. But what happened? It's not easy to tell.
I do not encourage people to waste time on this movie. I
didn't like it one bit and I felt cheated when it suddenly ended.

Cop Land (1997)
My favourite Sly-movie!
I've seen this movie a couple of times now, and I last caught it on TV. I remember when the movie came out, how it got some bad reviews over here, and I'd like to kick some critics ass for those lousy reviews. This movie is a wonderful piece of storytelling. And Sylvester Stallone does a great act as the seemingly retarded Sheriff of what is called 'Copland'.
Garrison, New Jersey. The home of many New York City cops. A cosy little place, but with a few suspicious characters who call themselves officers of the law. It is here corrupt cops hide out and it is here they really need a good Sheriff.
You should check this movie out, with not too many expectations, and I'll promise you a good time. And the cast is amazing too. Enjoy!

Inspector Gadget (1999)
Matthew Broderick does it again!
I caught this movie on TV the other day and was absolutely amazed by Kellog's creative movie-adaption of this 80's cartoon. And I was no lesser impressed by Matthew Broderick's acting (as usual).
Ok, so it's a children's movie. And it's Disney. But with all the funny references and jokes, it's a hilarious movie also for people over the age of eleven.
This is a movie you shouldn't have to miss. And it won't take you long to catch it either cause it's (unfortunately) under 90minutes long. And be sure to sit tight during the credits:)
I give this movie a ****/***** considering it's genre and what's expected of it. Don't get me wrong, it's not a masterpiece, but it's a great movie where you get what you're supposed to get.
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997)
Clint Eastwood isn't blind.
The TV-program listed this movie and gave it a five out of six rating. I didn't understand much of the title, and didn't know what to expect at all. And when it said directed by Clint Eastwood, I was really sceptical, not that I doubt Clint Eastwood's talent, but I just didn't know what this could be all about. So, naturally, I sat down to watch.
First of all, I should say Kevin Spacey does a fantastic homosexual man, and John Cusack's a fine journalist character. And Clint Eastwood's directing amazes me.
The second thing that comes to mind, is the fact that this is a movie based on a true story. And all characters depicted in the movie are also based on real people, and they're all pretty weird too. And they're all mixed together in an interesting plot. What is truth? What is an eye? Who beholds and who believes the beholder?
What I didn't quite get about the movie, was wether or not it was supposed to be comedy or drama. I guess it's a bit of both; at times it's hilarious, sometimes it's even scary. And you never know where it's going to take you, ie it's a very unpredictable movie, which is a major plus.
You'll have to watch this a couple of times before you get it all. Maybe it helps reading the book, I don't know. What are movies about? What's this about? Watch it. Enjoy, and play it again.

Minority Report (2002)
I wasn't expecting this.
I wasn't expecting much of this movie, so when I sat down with my friends to see it, I was positively surprised to see that this movie had something more going than just a lot of futuristic action with no content.
Of course, like all futuristic movies, it has glitches (lots and lots) and you shouldn't try to disassemble the movie, but it's hard not to. Remember the Back To The Future trilogy ? Remember Blade Runner ? Remember AI ? Remember Mission: Impossible ? This Spielberg. This is homage to Philip K Dick (who's novel the movie's based upon). This is homage to Stanley Kubrick (for whom Spielberg finished the directing of AI). This is Tom cruise. This is a movie filled with references, you won't catch them all the first time, but it sure does a lot for your viewing pleasure. This is science-fiction at it's best (at least this year).
So, if you don't go too deep into the logic and consistency of the movie, you'll find that this is quite an enjoyable adventure into the Spielberg movie-magic.
I give this movie a rating of ****/***** - Tom Cruise is excellent (as always, ok, I'm a fan, sorry) and the movie's a blast.
As Good as It Gets (1997)
This truly IS As Good As it Gets
The first time I saw this movie, I thought: 'Jack Nicholson is the greatest'. The second time I saw this movie, I thought: 'Greg Kinnear is really something'. I saw it a third time and thought: 'Wow, that Helen Hunt sure is amazing'. The fourth time I was in awe of Cuba Gooding Jr. Last time I saw it (must've been the 41st time), I wasn't thinking anymore, I was being part of the movie.
I can't explain the charm and wit of this movie, but it's a movie you can't ignore with a good conscience. (Is that con-science?).
Melvin is an interesting character with interesting flaws, he's interested in Carol the waitress and mostly uninterested in everything else. He has his own interesting views on absolutely everything, and he's easy to dislike - at first. But then you succumb and you fall in love with Melvin Udall, the writer of fiction for women (with no sense or accountability).
This movie goes from A to Z. It opens and it ends. No overdoing here, just simple movie-magic.

Good Will Hunting (1997)
In the end, the book would've been better.
I remember seeing this movie with my dad at the movies back in '97. I remember how it hit my stomach and made me shiver, and how I returned to the cinema the very next day to watch it again.
The moment I got it on video, I watched it every day after school. It was a great movie and I loved it. I cried. I laughed. It was a movie about life.
But now, after having seen the movie too many times, every line is like a quote and I'm thinking, this should be a book. I'd rather read the script over and over again than watching the movie another time. Don't get me wrong though, the movie's great, but I think the book would've been better.
This is the movie about Will Hunting, an intelligent kid with a disturbing childhood. Because of his childhood he has psychological issues and does not function well, but thanks to a job he got through his parole officer, he gets in touch with a math professor who takes him under his wings, but what will this mean and how will Will handle it all?
It's clearly a brilliant movie about troubled minds, growing up, and how we're all different in similar ways. Watch this movie once or twice, but refrain from watching it too many times.

Le mystère Parasuram (2000)
A little bit of magic on French TV.
I'm not usually into TV-movies, but the French have a thing going for creating nice atmospheres in these TV-movies.
A stranger from India, Parasuram (Kamal Kant Panwar), suddenly appears in a small, French 'village' and nobody knows who he is or where he's from. The police want him bad, but can't get his hands on him because of some nice people that take care of him. Parasuram discovers the wonders of the French culture (and women) and we follow his discoveries with great pleasure.
A funny, magical comedy from the French.
