Ernesto (2020)

Experiential disjointedness works well here.
23 July 2023
Worked well for me, bringing me into a deeply sad place in my payche, a place that never realized the joy and excitement of youth beyond dreaming about living it. Ernesto is in a place of confusion, maybe regret, and I want to comfort him, but who do I think I am?

All of the actors were on point, all of them beautiful and earnest and mysterious, some embodying characters weary beyond their years, or magically spontaneous in moments of raw experience. Oh, to fall through those experiences, those people. What is it too be young and stepping into adulthood? Can I try again? Do I honestly want to?

Not too slow. Just a different approach than you're used too.
11 April 2023
I don't understand people who give poor reviews because a movie is "too slow." This movie was not too slow. It was perfect. It was not a slasher pic, nor a haunted house pic, nor a zombie pic. This is psychological horror at its richest and most effective. People should just admit this isn't their kind of thing and move on.

The puppet is terrifying, but is not the monster. There is one moment, and yes, it's ambiguous, where I was convinced this beautiful strange creation was trying to comfort the protagonist. I can't be sure, of course, but it's the kind of ambiguity and confusion that comes with the territory of complex PTSD.

Truly stunning work.

Dark and glittery
11 November 2022
What a captivating, clever, well-performed short film, brimming with fierceness and unflinching intensity. I think enough of the backstop can be deduced from the theatrical revenge, though of course I want to know what happens next.

An uncomfortable topic is made more bearable by the tragic mask of camp and comedy, and we are left unsettled by the extended staredown at the end. The second half of this piece is practically acrobatic in its delivery. And every performance is spot on. The creepiness of one, the sly corners of another, the steel threat of the third.

I am definitely looking forward to seeing more work from everyone involved.

Beyond compare
27 November 2020
Oh wow. I just finished watching this fifteen minutes ago and I'm definitely still in its spell. So many elusive emotions filled me as I witnessed this story of women...this experience of women. I didn't know what to do with the energy within me....was it my own divine femininity rising?--so as the closing credits rolled and the bonfire song began I danced in my living room. I danced the wonder, the miracle, the transcendence into my body and soul. I don't know what else to say, other than this: there may be movies as good as this one, but no way are there any that are better. I'm stunned.

Hard (1998)

Complete, utter garbage
28 March 2016
I always feel bad for performers who do nudity for films that turn out as terrible as this one.

I mean, at least in this culture it seems, it's kind of a big deal to do that. You make yourself vulnerable to the world and you don't even get a good entry for your filmography.

Take a tired serial killer plot, add wooden acting, lots of nudity, sex and more sex, implications of torture and gore, and some shadowy warehouse scenes, and you have this movie. Oh yeah, toss in a severed penis for shock value.

HARD takes whatever shock it wants to impose on its audience and waters it down with cheap one-liners and unbelievable tension (as in, I don't buy it, I don't feel it).

And as for another review here, no, there is no comparison to Silence of the Lambs and DEFINITELY no comparison to Blue Velvet!

Agent Carter (2015–2016)
3/10
An unpopular view
31 August 2015
I appear to be in the minority, so I'll make this brief. Loaded with clichés, obviousness, and irritating simple-minded moralizing, Agent Carter's first season begins enjoyably enough and quickly sours, only to get worse and more ridiculous as the season progresses. The noble comic relief as British butler, the charming womanizer, the bullies in suits who stand in for law enforcement, a tangent into war-story romanticism, a completely uncaptivating villain with a disappointingly silly superpower, all blended together with clunky pacing. I'll give a couple points for (some) decent acting, and it does look great. There's no way I'm coming back for season 2, however.

Plateaus then falls into predictability
4 May 2014
Maybe it's just the way Jim Carrey comes off and he just can't help it, but up until a certain crucial point in the film, I took this as a really fun, goofy farce on romance films. We could get into genres and call it a romantic comedy, but the comedy part is not part of the romance like in a Meg Ryan movie; it's more a parody on romance between two characters who happen to be gay. Is it really based on a true story? On the DVD I watched a couple favorite scenes with commentary and based on the comments apparently it partly is! But that doesn't excuse that this movie really does take the wrong turn during the crucial scene I mentioned (don't worry, no spoilers). It gets sappy, stops being funny, and the audience is supposed to fall into tragic mode. It didn't work for me. Maybe I'm too cynical. I just wanted to keep laughing throughout the film, but the last 25% or so, the laughs just stopped, and there wasn't a real reason for that to happen that I could ascertain. Ewan MacGregor remains a fantastic actor, and he's just adorable in this. I'd say it's worth watching, but depending on your level of mushiness-tolerance, your final reaction will vary.

Error in directorial judgment here
24 September 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I marked this as a spoiler, so don't read further if you haven't seen this yet. Revealing MAJOR plot points here. To the director/editor/writer/whomever: you don't kill off one of the few truly redeemable and likable characters in just a couple minutes in such a disposable way as you did with Declan Porter and expect fans to love you for it. Characters die all the time, but this was treated as a blip in the drama. A reason for Jack to go nuts so Amanda could come out to him. Declan's character was one of the few oases of non-bitterness in this angry, catty show (which I love in general), and if you're going to dispose of him, you should have spent more time on it. I was so disenchanted by this that I almost don't care about checking out Season 3.

Maybe it had a point at the time...
22 December 2012
Okay, so John Book is in dire straits, and so is a kid and probably his mother, but he seems to feel none of this urgency, and we watch irritating scenes of him falling in love, drinking lemonade, barn-raising, milking a cow...just not very well crafted in my opinion. And the soundtrack was cheesy. Great acting, cinematography, I'll give it that. I think the film took on too much. I just found it nearly impossible to believe his calmness in the face of one of the worst realities a cop can face: the corruption of his friends and mentors. And maybe I'm just jaded by better films on this topic which were made later: L.A. Confidential, 13 Blocks, even Copland. But I just felt antsy watching this in 2012, and I usually really dig Peter Weir films, even the cheesy ones.

Embarrassing
1 November 2012
Grigoriy Dobrygin was my motive for renting this film. I loved him so much in How I Ended This Summer that I wanted to see how he got his start. Well here it is: a complete rip-off of Spider-Man's plot, Batman's brooding, and every cheap young-love romance you've ever seen come out of Hollywood. Loaded with product placement and completely lacking in riveting characters. Funny...the acting was really decent, which is surprising given the empty script they had to work with. Probably preferred by people who aren't like me. If you hate arty films or deep characters or decent, interesting plot lines, and if well-executed special effects and a cheesy villain that looks suspiciously like Vladimir Putin are enough for you, enjoy.

Boy (I) (2009)

Imperfect perfection
12 May 2012
Regardless of its faults, I'm rating this movie at the top wherever I can. It's not a coming-out film; it's an affirmation film. It's not about an abyss; it's a joyful release. It's one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen.

What you get in an hour-and-a-half is a lovely cast playing likable characters, heart-opening music, unusual settings, poetry, fish, food, fireworks.

You get lives.

Sure, there are faults here. The acting seems unrehearsed at times. We don't get much depth on the background of the characters. So this is a slice-of-life, an observation, a short love story, and you, viewer, get to fill in the blanks, because the film is not going to tell you. The sex is honest and tasteful and truly breathtaking. "Boy" is exactly what queer cinema needs sometimes: an unconventional, cleansing experience of awakening and renewal. Happy New Year, indeed.

Unpopular opinion: not as good as the first film
12 June 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Funny, suspenseful, overlong, self-indulgent, campy, nauseating, dull, insightful, and not as good as Night of the Living Dead. I guess I could get analytical on this and try to explain all these things, but for me they are all true, so it gets a balanced six-star rating. You'll have your own opinion. One thing: yep, malls in real life kinda are like zombie-land. The danger in going much deeper into sociological analysis is that the visual impact, and the almost surreal crazy-making soundtrack do a better job of making the point. It's a nihilistic film in some ways. Unlike in something like Truman Show, wherein there is a way out of zombie-hood, these characters just set up a play-land for themselves (who wouldn't?) and run away with nowhere else to really go. We're left, in the end, knowing that we either need to sell our souls to consumerism, or get slaughtered by it. If that's too depressing, we get some guts and stereotyped biker dudes to distract us. But I'm probably being a bit too hard. It's fun (should be shorter), but in my opinion, much overrated.

This die-hard fan wasn't impressed
26 July 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I'll say this: the acting was good.

Beyond that, I don't understand all the above-6 ratings this thing is getting.

1. Motivations are not believable. There is nothing compelling about the case in question that would realistically intrigue either Mulder or Scully enough to get involved.

2. This movie, apparently about the importance of belief, provides no reason for the existence of such a theme, teaches us nothing new about the theme, and even tosses in the importance of forgiveness, but only in a glossy way.

3. The bad guys are, frankly, ridiculous.

4. Here's the spoiler: this movie didn't EARN the two-headed dog.

5. Scully's sick kid and his family are merely props in Scully's "moral dilemma." This movie is a plot outline with dialog and scenery and absolutely zero depth and very little suspense. Glad y'all had fun watching it. Me, I want my ten bucks back.

Good introduction or refresher
16 June 2007
For those who know nothing about the life and ministry of Francis of Assisi, this is an excellent place to start. The documentary spans his initial encounter with Christ all the way to his death, in just under an hour. Indeed, it is a sketch with some nice insights provided by various commentators. I'm not partial to reenactments, and there are plenty here. I prefer seeing the places themselves, as well as the art of the time. As the documentary creators are only imagining what the visuals, I would prefer to be allowed to do the same; dramatizing these events without the depth that can occur in a film risks deflating the impact of the moment. This does happen here...I found myself looking away and listening to the words and enjoyed it much better. But there are beautiful countrysides, and plenty of other visuals which work quite well. In the end, this is a pleasant way to get an introduction to the work of Francis, and hopefully a desire to learn much more.

Depressing, nihilistic film
21 May 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Not sure what the point is here: cool graphics? This is a film with a child's fairy tale storyline and adult violence. Evil is pure evil, goodness is purely good. There is only one truly complex character in the film - looking out for the little girl though not believing in fairy tales, distrusting of the world, yet full of idealism and love.

Aside from adding realistic and violent imagery (in both the real and magical elements), I don't see that this is much of an update or significant (valuable) reworking of of a typical fairy tale. Perhaps it is in the ending where we get the true point: there is no hope in this world.

I, for one, don't buy it. And the cardboard cut-out characters who supposedly illustrate the point constitute the main problem. The film did nothing for me but leave me grumpy and feeling quite a bit cheated. All the great special effects and phenomenal acting simply serve to cheat us even further: it all serves the function of a facade. Strip it away and there's not much underneath. It is for this reason I am refusing to give this "bonus points" for all of it's excellent qualities. These are the very qualities that make the film that much more offensive.

Boys Beware (1962)
1/10
Not only homophobic, but racist too
16 December 2006
Warning: Spoilers
After watching this, I have two conclusions: the time period in which this was made, immediately after the 50s, was not as idyllic a society as many seem to grieve. This was a sick, deluded world in which such a despicable film would be force fed to so many kids. Secondly, we've come a long way, except that black people are still often cast as the violent criminal in popular entertainment...just like in this one.

Important to watch if you are interested in how the media can be a factor in how the unthinking masses come to conclusions. I'm not sure I understand how this is averaging even 3 stars...I agree it's important to watch, but that doesn't make the film "good." Not even "okay." It's absolute rubbish. Even as propaganda, it's blown out of proportion, and the music is cheerful and inappropriate.

Haiku Tunnel (2001)
10/10
Weird, funny, fresh. I loved it!
6 March 2004
While this film has its moments of "corporate spoof," I wouldn't say that's its main thrust. Haiku Tunnel reminds me more of The Critic, in that it seems to exist in its own universe. The cleverness of the writing brought me right into that universe, all the while knowing that the very surreal atmosphere in this guy's world was a near guarantee that everything would turn out okay. After a stressful work week myself, this was the perfect relief.

I would say I recommend this to the whole wide world, but judging from the other reviews here that would be silly. Some folks got into the humor, some did not. I must say I'm getting close to NOT reading the reviews of movies I loved, because the reviews are tending towards cruel. Haiku Tunnel does not deserve such treatment. And please, if you don't bother to watch a film all the way through, why bother reviewing it at all? I'm mystified.

Go with your instinct here, folks. It's obviously not for everyone, but I gave it a 10.

Hulk (2003)

Much gratitude to Ang Lee!
25 June 2003
Love it because:

1. The movie avoided typical summer blockbuster formulae.

2. Nick Nolte, Sam Elliott, Jennifer Connelly.

3. CGI, and the human qualities of Banner showing through the monstrous appearance of the Hulk.

4. Many folks will have their expectations dashed and will complain that it's not full of typical summer blockbuster formulae. That means I get to feel superior. ;)

5. Obvious connection to comic book origin/atomic testing parallels, while changing origin in order to more richly explore just how bonded Banner and Hulk are; there is no separation.

6. In spite of that fusion, we care more about Hulk than Banner.

Didn't like:

1. Overwrought dog-fighting scene, plus animal testing sequences make this a not-very-animal-friendly film. Thumbs down on that.

2. Silly ending made me roll my eyes.

Amazing show
10 March 2003
Because this performance has been preserved on video, any jazz fan owes it to herself or himself to see this. I found it, believe it or not, at my local library. The film is 36 minutes long, and I was moved to tears (in a good way) twice. I'm not a jazz expert by any means, but I know what moves me, and I recognize the brilliance in this.

Still don't get the nasty reviews
8 March 2003
I consider myself an intelligent person, a lover of movies, and having seen this movie twice now, I still think it's great. "Laugh-out-loud-embarrassing-the-person-sitting-next-to-you" great. The film was perfectly cast, perfectly paced, just bizarre enough to keep one's attention, and loaded with funny, crazy scenes. I haven't met a person in the flesh who hated this film, and yet the critics and several folks here have trashed the heck out of it. Frankly, it would seem that America has lost its sense of humor.

Serendipity (2001)
2/10
Confusing juxtaposition of purposes
30 October 2001
Most of the time, Serendipity is an unconvincing romance that is so uncertain about its main theme -- that one's soul mate is a matter of fate, no matter the odds -- that it bludgeons the viewer with it using a sledgehammer. Rather than melting into the film's sentimentality, I felt cornered by it, like a dog trapped in a corner.

At other times, this movie is hysterical, with ridiculously funny scenes mostly involving a department store clerk. These scenes seemed out of place here, as if they belonged in some other, better movie.

The quality of the acting and the purity of purpose are irrelevant factors when all is said and done. Serendipity simply feels like an English 101 theme paper on film. "Here's an example of serendipity." It needs fleshed out. Most of all, it screams for subtlety.

A deliciously horrific trip!
15 September 2001
It would be very easy to rave about the acting in this movie, particularly of Willem Dafoe and John Malkovitch, because they are so 100% dead-on perfect in their roles. I can only rave on and on about the cinematography, makeup, lighting, directing, editing, etc etc...this film simply radiates perfection. Shadow of a Vampire is strangely funny, and yet terrifying at the same time, with one of those endings which left me silent until I had to take a breath. Finally.

If you have a DVD player, rent that version. The making of the film is fascinating; some of the writing was done by the actors.

Brilliant, bravo, etc etc. Not conventional, but who needs conventional?

At least the soundtrack is good!
29 May 2001
Happily, the music score to this documentary is still in print, and recommended for those into electronic music. Other than that, however, there is nothing to recommend this film. The "interviews" are obviously scripted, and too much "evidence" is based on the Bible and psychics. The predictions in the film never came true, but this review is not based on that. Even though the music is a scream, it seems inappropriately pasted into the documentary. Probably not a good use of one's time, except for perhaps the many examples of bad 80s hair.

Disappointing
21 May 2001
A few witty one-liners, an okay plot, mostly terrible acting, and loads of potential. At least the message is a positive one. Nothing harmful about this film unless your expectations are too high. To be fair, I saw this movie with a group of five or six people, and we were about evenly split.

Chocolat (2000)
10/10
Beautiful movie to be watched on its own terms
1 April 2001
This gorgeous and moving film has been unfairly compared to "Like Water For Chocolate," which was a completely different movie with a very different story. "Chocolat," on its own terms, then: a simple folktale about a mother and daughter compelled by their family legacy to wander from town to town, sharing love (in this case, symbolized by chocolate with a special ingredient) and bringing hope to people. It's a film about freedom, about inclusiveness, about release. The sheer beauty of every aspect of the film had me in tears, and I bought the sound track immediately after leaving the theater. I had to let go of expecting the characters to have complicated motives; again, this is a simpler film than that. I could relate to it, and I'm certain I'm not the only one. The question is: how has each of us blindly followed what we called our destiny without scrutiny? How are we avoiding freedom? The answer is not always as obvious as we might expect.
