Going After Cthulhu
3 February 2020
In the bottom of the Mariana trench where the pressure is 1100 Kg per cm2, the bonus must certainly be great for reach the bottom of the sea including bring there our personal problem;that's the first thing I thought of these 300 technicians suddenly blown away by the opening of a Pandora's box but so far from sunlight it was to be expected. The film expresses art, it is technically flawless from the costumes of Dorotka Sapinska passing through the scenography of Naaman Marshall (art director of The Dark Knight) cinematographed by the Montenegrin Bojan Bazelli, ASC assisted by our italian Roberto De Angelis to the Steadycam (Public Enemies) last mention to the special effects of the British Moving Picture Company (MPC);so the feeling of a useless escape hunted down by the unknown is accompanied by the splendid electronic scores of the ever better Marco Beltrami (The Thing 2011, Scream) & Brandon Roberts (Soundtrack only available in digital download); Although William Eubank's UNDERWATER is influenced by masterpiece like Cloverfield or Alien, I felt clearly a sound of the Nostromo in their main room at the beginning of the film ,but talk about infulences I still have the androgynous beauty imprinted of Kristen in panties and I can not forget her great acting;so to close this review I would point out that the most banal error that can be done is to waste time comparing this outstanding movie to the already ones done forgetting what is being watched; if you do it in this spirit, you can only want to see it again and again because it is a unique film, a well-written, solid Lovecraftian nightmare that keeps you going until the last implosion.

Battleship (2012)

Thanks God is 2D
15 April 2012
I liked very much Peter's Berg(The Kingdom,Hancock)Battleship,to tell the truth I really loved this guy also as actor on Wes Craven's Shocker, anyway back to Battleship, I really loved the choice of 2D,I Just see in to a big theater equipped with 7.1 Dolby CP650 and DLP Christie CP2000,and it was an amazing ,terrific experience! So,despite some catchwords,Battleship is not Transformers on the sea,is not fake, weak and headacher ,but it keep a good solid direction with great use of cgi as I loved the use of AC/DC music OK,don't count causality's ,don't ask why this aliens are here and first of all don't send message in the space, just think to fight and enjoy some comic delight!Highly Recommended!!!

Weak Film
29 May 2006
From Mr.Brett Ratner A decent but not excellent film, the same weak direction of ever, and character development, action is really the strong point but is not enough if compared to the previous films. The cinematography is one of worst(unrecognizable Dante Spinotti) never seen before and some CGi effects are not well integrated with the lights language..I really hate this gold, sepia halo... Some part of the story seems cut and paste(As the night fall suddenly in San Francisco) but that's my opinion as focused audience. I'm sure many other people will love this weak -fast food- flick!I don't love this film and I feel a little be angry to be considered dumb from production companies.

Beware cross the street, trucks are running!
24 May 2006
This road/motel slasher movie is the sequel of House of 1000 Corpses, directed by the surprising Mr.Rob Zombie; his catchy style now seems be very close to Tarantino Kill Bill and Oliver Stone Natural Born killers. Hand-held shoots give realism ,without give collateral's headache, but what we also see is not free and too much explicit gore. Zombie pay homage to Tobe Hopper 's Texas Chainsaw but the cast of Michale Berryman's Pluto(Hill have eyes) is another homage of that kind of cinema, including some lights and shoot that remind me Eric Red's The Hitcher. This is a strong, solid film about cruel and depraved madness ,leaving the craze metaphysical feel of the first movie, included the editing, this film walk without shoes in the ground of unholy reality showing the last acts of a family of serial killers. All the old cast is present, from Baby Firefly the cool, handsome, beautiful, hot and a little whore Sheri Moon to Capt Spaulding (Sid Haig)taken and boosted directly from Groucho Marx's Animal Crakers, homage to Marx bros that collide and crash,as for a victim against a truck, with Elvis Presley during a dialogue, film vs/over music, music over/vs, image that's Rob Zombie!! Amazing job at the cinematography by Phil Parmet that shoot on Panavison super 16 mm(blow up on 35mm) using DI in the Post prod, that was really the key for understand and show the Director Ideas!www.theasc.com/magazine/aug05/devils/page1.html As for the use of MUSIC;One of best ideas was give a feel of dangerous innocence to the Family while at the end the use of Free Bird by Lynyrd Skynyrd during the showdown mixed to the weapons noise and close ups made the rest ,a real gem ,a masterpiece that deserve the right prize.

Suffer,Love and Hope!
6 November 2005
Cameron Crowe is one of these director very careful to details,I really love how he works, also if Box office been liar I really loved ELIZABETHTOWN(Wagner,Cruise,Crowe Production);Main actors Dunst and Bloom are simply great, the alchemy is perfect, the editing, cinematography(John Toll) and use of music ,especially this latter, are a plunge in the Heart! This film speak about Family, about Dead(the onlytruth all we know), speak about Love , through the eyes of normal people;I think this film is highly advise against cynical people. Who really know the words Suffer,Love and Hope will enjoy a lot about this Outstanding Masterpiece!

Real Gem
15 September 2005
One month ago this film came out on my TV set,now I got a good full frame DVD R1. I lost the opening sequence but since the first minutes I understand that Don Siegel(died on 20 April 1991 the same day was my 20th birthday) hand could be clearly present and I was not wrong! The music by Lalo Schifrin is quite great as ever, but the real Key is Michael C.Butler Cinematography, terrific and outstanding Job; I really loved the scene where a yellow car is running on dust streets under blue sky with huge white clouds at the end of the heist, but also really loved the depth of field and the colors and lights close to the reality during the whole flick, according me not so simple with lenses and film stocks available at that times. Keeping high audience's attention Realism and details are others strong points of this film for example I loved the noise of flies over cop's just death, with an hole in head, then at the beginning during the gunfight between Charley(an outstanding Walter Matthau) and other crews inside the bank we see them reflected on glass. So I put this film among others 70's Don's masterpieces as been Dirty Harry,Telefon and Escape from Alcatraz.

High Tension (2003)

Disgusting
12 June 2005
High Tension well directed by Alexandre Aja(3rd work here) using score in a smart Way is Lively suggested to empty stomach's audiences. This disgusting hybrid can easily mix as rip off about John Dahl's Joy Ride meet James Mangold's Identity.High Tension contains high level of stress of but it lacks for the too much free gore and violence. Is a kind to do cinema that bring to nowhere, except for a good cinematography by Maxime Alexandre, good special effects, and believable acting ,but it almost a must for this kind of films. In this world of already real violence I could suggested a psychiatric evaluation to Producers and Director.

The Keep Meet Session 9/Blair Witch
25 January 2005
Yesterday I Just finally found on DVD(Region2/4.99Euros) this weird Title, commented by other users like a sort of MICHAEL MANN's THE KEEP rip off.I can say that it deserved my time, Yea,This film contains anything of Michael Mann's The Keep but also have the deep madness show on Brad Anderson's Session 9 with a little bit of Blair Witch Project. Technically is a good movie ,good story by Clive Dawson (Here on his 4th project more for UK TV),Great cinematography by John Pardue and good Acting(over all Jason Flemyng). A very good debut by Rob Green, that according me is a careful observer and a could have a chance for became a great filmmaker!

Collateral (2004)

Homicide News from L.A, but so far from Hollywood
19 October 2004
There are things that on Motion Picture can't be picked up,Said Mann, with this pharse he open the doors to Collateral and HD world translate for our eyes with Thomson Viper and Sony Hdwf-900. Amazing Cinematographed was Heat,Collateral's work on cinematography(Cameron Before Beebe after) and is fitting Glossy is quite streamlined and all turn on the research of incredible deep of field by Night and on the reproduction and resolution of the natural colors of the urban and suburban aspects of the City of Lights... Looking for realism and for details give a new kind of stage performance,Tom Cruise in on The Top on this film, and he help us to love and be interest on Vincent, than Foxx is perfect Cabbie first from how he take on hand the gun The music is melt like always perfectly with images,The Main title BriefCase by Tom RotchRock is close to Dr.Destructo by Tangerine Dream used on Thief, and Thats remind me a sort of rewiev about Mann's films also present on Collateral(Heat maybe was more) The sound is another aspect that help us to be put on realism, the way that Vince kill 2 bad guys on the alley is quite of amazing never seen before...Real TV Homicide News from L.A but so far from Hollywood.

Michael Seresin
23 July 2004
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is absolutely The best Episode of the saga;included a great direction by Alfonso Cuaron (Y Tu Mama Tambien)and a smart screenplay by Steven Kloves from a Story by J.K.Rowling. That episode, where the protagonist are grew up,is supported by an Amazing cinematography by Michael Seresin(please read the intresting article on American Cinematographer Iss.June 2004)there are finally believable CGI digital effects mixed to traditional special effects. That's an example how the current Fantasy cinema supported by modern devices and technologies must be;Please don't lost it could be unique!!

Excellent Cinematography
23 June 2004
Just watch this film, last nite,on Tv ,after years of unaware... I was stunned by the story, the acting of Dustin Hoffman and the excellent cinematography by Conrad Hall...expecially on the night scenes, never see so depth of field...not so easly with traditional cinematography and zero artifacts like digital effects... It remember me Thief shoot by Don Thorin on 1980,and I can say that I relize only now what we have lost on terms of knowledge and know/how when mr.Hall passed away... May be this movie also an example of cinematography for the future younger generation...

Fan of good cinema Keep Away,it doesn't deserve all that kind of attention...

Could be developed better but
24 January 2004
This film play about the fear of unknow, helped by a Amazing and STUNNING Cinematography by Allen Daviau ASC,one of reason why worth be watching! The story could be developed better but is an example how sci-fi could be see from a more intimistic and human side, without too much special effects...like was the oldiest sci fi movie, and that was a great effort.

The First Matrix was quite Amazing under a lot of aspects...but the sequels are so boring and useless! Reload got any CGI's effect so cheesy, the story take a way like shuffle the cards for found new intrest...and at last Revolution is quite foreseen A commercial operations ,and for what we see on the first movie is a Shame!

Tim Robbins Masterpiece
3 November 2003
This film is Not so good like anybody said,Overrated is the right word, the story seem coming from Stephen King short novel and it doesn't deserve anything of new. Direction and Cinematography according me are far from be considerate from the Academy(that will testing how I'm profane)like I'm sure that is Tim Robbin's acting masterpiece, that's is enough for watch this movie!

Richardson Cinematography
18 July 2003
I loved Redford on BRUBAKER like actor... I love how Redford directing this film using in a smart way an intense Thomas Newman's score and a great Robert Richardson's Cinematography, according me one of best cinematographer on Hollywood Industry with Elliot Davis;Dante Spinotti and Dean Cundey. That not mean only "Greetings from Montana",his lights and shots are melt and useful for catch and keep the strong emotions and feelings of this story...story about the destiny and the faith...story that seems lack in any parts but at the end this film worth be watch without using FastForward button...

Terence Dudley's Survivors
2 July 2003
Boyle is a great director, not only use music in the best way possible but have found how make me a jump on the seat... The scene where the protagonist is at home and got a candle in the hand is absolutely the scariest never seen before...regards for the editing and the shot.

I'm talking about music,is used for describe unhealty situations and also for emerge in to the light of a hope... The whole movie is structured for be close to realilty (I think thanks to digital cinematography) and remind me any of Romero's DAY of The Dead wiht few gore meet BBC's Terence Dudley's Survivors...

15 June 2003
Just brought a DVD version of this film and Finally my old copy on VHS pan e scan can go in the trash. Dvd really gave justice at the great Douglas Milsome's Cinematography and camera work;that story ,about crudelity of war, is telled with great sense of reality and each time that I watch this film I hate George Dzundza Crazy Real Bastard's role,a great performace! I think that Is a very disappointment that this movie could be a little bit forget from the mass, form my microwold I can say rent or buy and enjoy...

Bush loving war
7 February 2003
Not so bad but not so good like anybody said me. I found this incredible job of Scorsese useful for understand the origin of the USA Citizens ,with an historical dramatization of things really happen, The narrative structure help to bypass dangerus yawn at in the end there are any artificious for make a sense,or better for help us to hate mr.Cutting...because the story is going in different way,is becoming too much a sort of historical report and the feeling of revenge between Di Caprio e Lewis is quite diluite... One times streets of NY was dirty in all the sense, but I can't to think that USA is born from all this kind of filthy.. Reactions of the audience?Any people sit near me said 'Now I understand why Bush loving war'...I think that Scorsese will not help us to understand that, but thank God and to any people we're still free for express our opinions...

Manhunter's fan KEEP AWAY
30 October 2002
Because the only thing to say is useless, ridiculous and disgraceful attempt to make a film ,from a good novel, that MICHAEL MANN on 1986 have done greatly. That's not a question for a better adaptation of the book from Tad Tally only because the final is more close to the book or because he Wrote the great Silence of the Lambs;Just asking to myself where is a better adaptation?Maybe Call different Point of awful View. That is a silly pretext, anybody is living with haughty first Dino de Laurentiis and his maniacal passion for make Money...sorry but I prefer your production when you been DEG. The choice of Brett Ratner is simply bad,and make me see bad clouds at the horizon about filmaking! The only reason for give a sense to Red Dragon should be that Manhunter never exist, but the reality is different so I feel to compare. I'will not speak too much about technical differences and characters Performance (Too Much Gap). For understand what i'm saying ,The difference between this two film could be condensate on two scenes skipping the bad photocopy scene where is analysed a piece of paper. First, Lounds on the street is speaking with Graham,on Manhunter Lounds fly on the Car's bonnet ,here on RD is simply take for the collar...thats means the difference of Strong. Second scene is the Tiger's scene...on Manhunter there is an Explosion of empatic sensations from the character, music is more adeguate, lights is superb...on Red Dragon look like a ridiculous b-movie. Dante Spinotti make the best possible with this director,I hope will come back to work with the Great Director, first Michael Mann because I will be redundant but thats duo worth the right consideration and the right awards! Like Audience I feel to say stop to joke...we worth anything else.

Megalodon's attack
22 October 2002
A sad story tell us in a smart way. Benigni show us how is a great director and actor and how been able to directing very good actors, over all Kim Rossi Stuart, his eyes and Lights used on the scene's before departing for Paese dei Balocchi are simply amazing, his acting remind me a little of Jurgen Prochnow. Dante Spinotti like always make a great job,his way to lighting woods and nights remind me Olmi's the secret of old wood and a special mention goes to the supervison of the CGI effect used in a very good clever way ,like was The Megalodon's Attack scene a bit of incredible pure fear. Danilo Donati doing the rest...e Rest in Peace great Man!

I'm happy because finally I'm looking something of very intresting and different on the sad outline of italian cinema.

...short of Ideas
20 May 2002
Let me say that Star Wars(episode IV,V,VI) been an important experience on my childhood but after knowed that George Lucas was trying to show us the Prequels I wondered. Wondering about What, about the no sense of this operation because I'm not so curious about the childhood of our heros.Maybe was better made new stories in the future,so the spaceships look like more modern with a sense. But please, let me explane better, new digital technicals are an Important chances but if are used on wrong way you can transform a film in to a Videogame and that's what is happen. Too Much difference between scenes with real locations(see at Lake of Como)and digital locations, one is real the second NO.Cinematography by David Tattersal is standarized, lights are always the same in each scene(on THE MAJESTIC lighthouse's scene the color at sunset is the same of the lot sunset show on Episode II) Than this film is full of quotation from the episode IV,see at Anakin desert's house when drink green stuffs and there are quotation from Blade Runner and Gladiator, and I found out of place this homage to Ridley Scott. That's mean that Mr.Lucas is short of Ideas, also if the Box office, like always will belie my bad opinions.

Forget what you read of bad about Ali, here...
7 March 2002
No precooking movie here...no digital domain here...but a clever biography,an official biography and for these reason unquestionable, tell in the same way with an incredible realism and precision, punches included! Emmanuel Lubezki ,take us in the sixties with his light, and said about Mann'Michael's instincts are pretty amazing.Others might size up the challenge and decide not to do it,but Michael pushes everyone to make it happen'…that's phrase is for amazing shot on the cockpit when Ali is going for the first time in africa,no more green screen mr. nice guy,but in this film according me is a general rule! I loved how Will Smith played ALI,he worth a serious consideration from the Academy(but only 2 Nominations are too bad)...but a nice surprise for me is also Angelo Dundee played by Ron Silver. Smith is surrounded of good actors and I think that the match was show us how Ali life was surrounded of friends and enemies…and Mann been able to do it. Also special mention to Greg Cannom...is absolutely the best special make up artist! Anyway, that's a great Film,157 minutes are simply catalyzed also because I found the subject ,ALI's Life, very intresting, send great messages,he fight against peoples for the peoples and himself, wifes and now only against himself, and I hope you'll win this important last round. Last but not the least I say to IMDB visitors Forget what you read of bad(reviews) about Ali Here

Second the Carachter are Awful,Mr.Costner is always with strange pose and the button of is jacket is under a big pressure and could skip. There are a particular ways to be involved in a project and tell that an important and Historical docu drama but in that movie anything and anybody aren't conviced ,in particular the Director and Camera Operator. Too much FootAge used, bad movie, don't waste time and money...
