Shôrinji kenpô (1975)
Gory Japanese Nationalist, Martial Arts, Tearjerker. A first!
In one scene he helps orphans, the next he rips off someones penis and feeds it to a dog. He cries the loss of his love, the prostitute he helped get off the street...then his friend gets his arm cut off with a sword and blood spurts from the stump. All of this with Japanese Nationalist beliefs and hatred against Chinese & Americans. This does star Sonny Chiba and it isn't bad, though the drama seems a little cheesy with the orphans and everybody's fake tears. Not one of his top three films for sure.
Makai tenshô (1981)
Beware Bert & Ernie, Sesame Street American dub- Unwatchable!!
I couldn't watch the entire film the dubbing was so bad. So I turned down the sound and heard nothing. After ten minutes I couldn't watch it either way...which is too bad since it looked like a good film. But this was a serious samurai horror film that was dubbed by people who thought it would be funny to do Erkel or Bert & Ernie voices over a Japanese film. These are the same people who ruined Ninja Wars! It's great for Mystery Science Theatre 3000 but this was a legitimate release!
Kozure satsujin ken (1976)
one of Chiba's best
Out of the 8 or so Sonny Chiba movies I've seen this ranks 2nd only to The Streetfighter. Amazing action, awesome slow motion editing (that speeds up on impact at times), and drama too. Sonny gives one of his best performances.
Bodigâdo Kiba (1973)
Avoid the Americanized version at all costs. It is unwatchable!
Avoid the USA version. It is with added US footage and the worst dubbing you've ever heard probably done by New York amateurs. The dubbing is so bad that it sounds like Mystery Science Theater 3000. I think a black guy from the Bronx does Chiba's voice. I couldn't watch the entire film it was that bad. Instead of this Americanized version watch Chiba's other greats like The Streetfighter or Karate Warriors.
The Black Room (1982)
A special film that works despite budget limitations
The Black Room turned out to be an engrossing semi-masterpiece. I was expecting mundane from this forgotten horror, but what I saw was more kinky, twisted and sick than I'd imagined. Something about the acting, the script , the directing or everything was different than other films. It also has the most graffically depicted blood transfusions I've ever seen. They were painstakingly slow over these shots. I had to turn away....gallons of blood... It's a shame Clara Perryman didn't do much after this film. She was excellent and made the troubled relationship with her and Jim Stathis {also great} possibly more interesting than the horror elements. Linnea Quigley plays a small role as the babysitter. She says maybe 5 words.
Nurse Sherri (1977)
This PG-13 fare is so bad it's numbingly horrible
The first 20 minutes were a little fun because I don't think I've seen a film this bad before {acting, script, effects (!), etc....} The rest of the running time seemed to drag forever with every cliche in dialog used to no effect. These people seemed to not really like horror movies or how to make them or any other movie. There's no adult language, a bit of brief nudity, and no gore except fake blood smeared over no open wounds, etc.. It would have been rated PG in the early eighties and PG-13 nowadays. I'm not sure how it got an R rating or if it really did. I saw the American International release titled Hospital Of Terror. I've seen 100 horror films in the past 12 months and this is probably the worst film I've ever seen. Here's an example of how bad it is: There's one scene where something green comes through the door. I'm not sure what it's supposed to be but what it is on screen is some kid's green crayon scribblings {I'm not exaggerating} super-imposed over the film, semi-moving inside the door, then its supposed to do something to Nurse Sherri to possess her I suppose. I could not believe they had the lack of pride to show this embarrassment.
