A King miniseries worth staying up for.
9 March 1999
This was quite easily the best miniseries that Stephen King participated in. In the past, I have almost always been quite disappointed by the T.V. version's of his books. I usually find that I am way off on my visualization of the characters and interpretation of events when I see it put onto a screen, and I feel even further out of sync when Mr. King either directs it or has a main part in the telling of the story. I had been struggling with his latest book, "Bag of Bones" when I saw this miniseries being advertised. I almost skipped it entirely, but decided to tape it anyway. Boy was I pleasantly surprised! Although the "storm" was not much to look at, I found the tale quite absorbing. When the series ended on Thursday evening, I went down to rewind the tape, decided to watch a bit, and ended up staying awake all night to watch it. Now, if he can manage to put "The Green Mile" on the screen.......

Get Past The Theme And Watch It
17 January 1999
Being Saturday evening (comedy night in our house),my wife and I sat down to watch a supposedly funny movie called "Boogie Nights". The only thing I had heard about it was that my sister-in-law told us not to see it because it was bawdy and she walked out, so right away I knew it was worth watching. This movie was nothing like we thought it was going to be like--it was a fantastic and quite involving drama, which deserved a few Oscars. The time frames from the early 70's to the mid 80's were flawless, and the "glamor" of the porn industry was effectively dispelled by the portrayal of the stars. One of the most memorable scenes of all times, in my opinion was the drug deal gone bad, the firecrackers, the guy in the bathrobe and the utter uneasiness of the deposed porn stars as we listened to "Jessie's Girl" and "Sister Christian". Burt Reynolds was great as Jack Horner, the director who made money with young energy and the coming trends, but realized he had to be "father" to all those aging stars who had nowhere else to go once the bright lights began to flicker and the money was getting thin.

Hope Floats (1998)

Wrong Choice!
10 January 1999
Rented out this stinker when I had "Lethal Weapon 4" in my hand. Wife wanted to see it, so I chose to watch about 2 hours of almost pure boredom. The "hope" in this movie was wishing when it would end. I found no character to which I could identify with, except her father. Her mother lamented about wiping out a hill of ants when she had stupid stuffed cats on the stairway. And what kind of a role model can she be if she lets that annoying kid Travis dress and act like a dog, lizard,Charlie Chaplin, etc. He is not a character that any normal child should strive to be like. Think the wrong kid got beat up at school. And his mother never came to her mother's funeral when the mother cared for him all these years? Come on Sandra!!!! I could probably find a person at a bar during closing time to write a more believable story.
