World's Best Electric Cars (2022)
No drawbacks fiscussed
A fluff piece which does not consider the drawbacks of electric cars. The cars looked at are beautiful, powerful and can do amazing things.
But consider the off-road segment. Who would risk going somewhere remote and then using the battery to power camping appliances? Too bad if you run out of charge. Who's going to rescue you?
Another thing that's glossed over is the cost. Most cars looked at are out of the range of most people's finances. And the charge time and cost is not mentioned much at all. Good for a look if you are interested, but more homework is needed for taking the plunge into electric cars.
Australia Come Fly with Me (2020)
A look at the social impacts of the aviation industry in Australia.
Quite a watchable series, but it focusses too much on the air hostesses and women moving into airline pilot careers. Would have been a better series without the political correctness element.
The Chocolate Factory: Inside Cadbury Australia (2020)
Relaxing and informative
A great program to have in the background while doing craft or a jig puzzle. Short titles provide brief information and it would have been better to have more features of the chocolate process explained.
Inside the Freemasons (2017)
Interesting but too long
It was good learning what the Freemasons are about and watching some of the ceremonies but it was too long with time spent on tedious detail about individuals. Would have been good to hear more from their partners.
Hidden Figures (2016)
Tedious and disappointing
Tedious and not enough time spent on the space technology. Implausible in places, like when Dorothy "fixes" the computer, it would not be possible without knowing the machine architecture. The men, apart from Harrison, were made to look stupid. IBM would not send incompetent technicians to such a high profile client like NASA.
Too much of a political agenda for my liking, I thought it would be a lot better, rather disappointing.
The Genius of Invention (2013)
Interesting show but a bit limited in content.
The first episode did not even mention Tesla's invention of power transmission. They at least got the fact right that James Watt did not invent the steam engine, he only improved the efficiency of the atmospheric steam engine.
You get the impression James Watt was in it for the money as he must've had great legal or financial advice as he got royalties for the coal saved. This arrangement was very lucrative. The patents stifled improvements as they were too broad I think. No one could redo the common "condenser" as James Watt already had that covered.
The show covers the invention and improvement of the turbine which made for an interesting viewing.
It has a lot of fluff and not a lot of content, made palatable to young school age students maybe.
Traffic (2000)
Good, especially for interested in the drug problem.
Quite good, but I think it would be better appreciated by those with an interest in the drug problem.
I found the whole film a bit too long and slow.
The acting was good.
I also liked the sepia toning of the colour to indicate different loactions & environments. Was the brown tone for the police a call back to the 70's, suggesting that the police's way of dealing with the problem is out of date?
I also like when Micheal Douglas asks for ideas about how to deal with the problem and gets no answers whatsoever from his entourage of experts.
