For Love of the Game (1999)
Well worth movie theater prices...guys, your date will like the story.
Kevin Costner may not be a great director based on WATERWORLD and POSTMAN, and perhaps he can be a pain in the butt for the studios, but when given a role like Billy Chapel he can really shine. If you liked BULL DURHAM, then this is a movie to see. At the very least it will be worth a rental when its out on video.
You've Got Mail (1998)
Better than SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE
If you like Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan you will really like this movie. The dialogue and interaction between them is great. Also, this is the first major release for Parker Posey, known as "the queen of the indies". Her performance should secure her some future leading roles.
Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead (1995)
A total waste of a good cast, and a waste of your time.
Perhaps if you are dead and in Denver you could rent this movie, but people who are still alive should find something else to do. Didn't the actors read the script before signing on? This is one stupid movie that wastes the talents of some usually fine actors.
The Daytrippers (1996)
The cast makes this an enjoyable film.
I am a big Parker Posey fan (Waiting for Guffman, Party Girl, House of Yes and other indie films), and the addition of Hope Davis (Next Stop Wonderland) and other cast members made this film very watchable. The storyline itself is rather forgettable.
There's Something About Mary (1998)
Cameron Diaz... that pretty much covers it, guys.
This movie breaks a lot of rules. It makes fun of the retarded; lights a pet dog on fire; uses bathroom humor to the max; hair gel?; yet somehow manages to be truly funny rather than offensive. If your kids see it though, you will have some explaining to do.
Blood Simple (1984)
If you liked FARGO you will love this movie.
Blood Simple held my attention right from the opening scene. Its a very clever plot, one which you the viewer are in on from the beginning. The pleasure of this film is in watching the characters try to extricate themselves from a variety of plot twists.
Next Stop Wonderland (1998)
Guys, this movie IS NOT a "chick flick", you can go see it.
A well done, low budget, no big stars movie about dating and relationships. Some very clever moments that we should all be able to relate to. Filmed entirely in Boston and loaded with local color and characters.
The House of Yes (1997)
Fans of Parker Posey will love this movie
The subject matter (incest) may turn some viewers off, but actually it is handled quite well and is not offensive. The acting and dialogue are outstanding. The family is crazy, but then don't we all have some nutty relatives.
