margaret's museum without all the nasty preservatives, eh?
22 September 1999
the narrator, moonie, starts out with audience support; other characters eventually make it there or get beaten up.

this film shares atmosphere with "margaret's museum", but far fewer people die and end up in formaldehyde. the wind and the bluffs trick the memory into something with colder, fresher air than the house of ratings usually supplies.

however, it won't make you want to live in a trailer anytime soon.

khudojnazarov calls it traditional tragicomedy; we call it monty python in russia.

if we'd missed this film, we'd have had to fly to russia or sweden to see it. what an expensive night at the cinema that would prove. (is there a distributor out there reading this? we've got a big *HINT* stick we'd like to hit you with.)

we laughed and gaped through the entire film. we saw it at the toronto international film festival. mr khudojnazarov fielded questions after the premier. we asked about the scene with the cow; we believe he called it something akin to "an act of god".

please, see it and promote charming, intelligent directors who make charming, intelligent movies.

ps, you'll find out what happened to manni after lola ran with her DM.

fantastic pacing and gorgeous colors.

we'd like to know what kind of treat flo got for her fabulous emoting.

ah, if only we had found another short like this at the film festival in 1999.

Guinevere (1999)

this movie is better than the tagline suggests.

pygmalian and galateas, eh?: stephen rea as connie, surrounded by a balanced cross-section of beautiful women (in a role many would like to have for real).

we found this a light story that didn't tie everything into a neat, literary weave. (does connie represent arthur, lancelot or just some guy who likes to address his protegees medievally?)

something of a growing-up fairy tale for the newly grown-up.

twisting, controlling revenge: we loved it.
22 September 1999
edgy and ensnaring, director beaudin finesses that old story of betrayal and revenge. the characters and their story humanize one facet at a time, in a very believable evolution.

beautiful actors, beautiful soundtrack, beautiful cinema.

this movie is our first jean beaudin. pardon us, we must track down the remainder of his work...
