One of the best family films!
28 February 2001
Free Willy 3 is primarily about Max, an intelligent, inquisitive ten-year-old who accompanies his father on a whaling expedition. His conscience bothers him about his father's career, but instead of taking the usual route of performing a string of silly pranks (like you would see in a lot of children's shows), he tries reasoning with his dad. He also asks question after question -- not just about the technical aspects of whaling, but he also delves deeper into the more important questions of life ("Do you always have to do the right thing, even if it hurts?").

One of the things I liked best about Free Willy 3 was the realistic and sympathetic portrayal of the father, even though he was the "villain" of the story. He was a man doing a job that has been in his family for years, and without it he wasn't sure who he was. Despite having a career others disagreed with, he was a caring, compassionate person who loved his son. Other characters are drawn out nicely as well -- Jesse and Randolph, from the first two films, and their new co-workers on the sea -- showing their tempers as well as their more positive sides.

Couple all these features with stunning cinematography and a beautiful score, and you have one fine film!

Dutch (1991)

Great characters in a very funny film
25 March 1999
The characters were finely written, I thought, although it may not seem so at first. They seem to be caricatures just to make you laugh. But there are reasons for the way each of them behave, though they are not always said straight out for the usual movie-going public to catch....Someone here wrote that he thought that Dutch was the one who was brutal and immature. I don't think he was acting that way for no reason at all, but he purposely set out to get on Dutch's nerves. And maybe he *was* a little uncouth by nature (perhaps from the way he was raised?). But unlike Doyle, he didn't think it was beneath him to be himself, even when surrounded by the hoity-toity society he now finds himself in. They both seemed to learn from each other and become better people when their personalities clashed.

What We Did That Night (1999 TV Movie)

Creepy and surprising!

At first I was disappointed -- I thought it was going to be another take on "I Know What You Did Last Summer." But there was a lot more to it than that...Rick Schroder plays a great bastard, he should get this role more often!

Beautiful, moving, powerful

An excellent film, an emotional powerhouse! Not only is the story itself so moving, but it is greatly enhanced by the style: the way the camera moves during certain scenes, sounds that resurface from the past, the wonderful selection and timing of songs and the score, the use of color and light, etc. Tom Cruise slips effortlessly into his role; within moments you forget Tom Cruise the Actor, and see him only as Ron Kovik. I put off seeing this film until just recently because I thought it was mostly fighting and bloodshed; but it instead delves into many years of one man's life, and how just a few moments of war changes him forever.

Titanic (1997)
Very stunning, very moving
21 September 1998
I'd just like to say that I'm fed up with everyone's assumptions that if you're female and you like Titanic, it's only because of DiCaprio. Contrary to what a lot of people may believe, there are a lot of young females out there who actually DO watch a movie for its historical and/or cinematic merit. This is one of them. Besides, am I the only one who isn't completely blind: There's hundreds of men in this movie, and not an ugly one in the bunch. DiCaprio is very talented and, yes, good-looking. But he's not the only thing us girls go to the theater to see.

Wonderful characters, dialogue, 80s memories!
20 September 1998
I thought this was Adam Sandler's best role so far. He was the most human, down-to-earth, cuddly, adorable, the kind of guy I'd love to find! Drew Barrymore was just as great, and the two had a wonderful on-screen chemistry. I thought this film was romantic in the true sense of the word -- not a "romantic" movie as far as Hollywood's idea of "romantic" goes (i.e. sex and only sex), but truly romantic (how your heart pounds before that first kiss with the perfect person!)....And let's not forget the great flashback to the 80s!!! There's plenty of 80s clothes, slang and music to keep you reminiscing for quite some time!
