High Fidelity (2000)

an overestimated movie
18 March 2001
What a boring movie is this. The movie is supposed to give an interaction between the music and the life of the main character, but the music is only wasted background. That can be overcome when the movie would have had strong acting and a good story. But the acting is bad except for some scenes in which the two workers in the store are in the foreground and the story is worse. I voted a one for this film because it wasted two hours.

don't betray your friends
10 March 2001
Don't betray your friends is the lesson we learn out of this nice film. The film has a surprising plot which gives the viewer a nice shock. I like the acting of the young boys a lot. Even Ira, the neurotic dumb friend, awakes sympathy in the end. Christopher Walken tied to a chair in most part of the movie is an amazing gangster. But the best thing is the lesson that you should always be true to your friends.

very bad movie
25 February 2001
I thought that I must have fallen asleep because I did not understand a thing about what is this movie about. But I realised it was only running for ten minutes. Mel Gibson came in. He walked and talked as if he entered twin peaks. The only thing that missed was the nice music of angel badalamenti. Someone spoke. But I could not catch up. This movie is your worst nightmare. Don't go to Blockbuster to rent it. Let it rest in the stores.

Robin Hood in America
13 January 2001
Although the film teaches us a lot about American history and makes a good effort to show how each human being under given circumstances can become a very cruel person, it never grows above the level of Robin Hood in America. Mel Gibson as the new Errol Flynn. Off course there is the reverend (father Tuck) and an Afro American who is respected by everyone. Off course there are mean and cruel English officers. (I hated them myself for two and a half hours). And there is a marriage. Our hero is dedicated to his family. He leaves them however behind and becomes the leader of the pack. This film is amusement and nothing more. It is a good laugh at some times.

What bothered me in the opening scenes is the holding of the chandelier by our hero. All the candle wax must because of the diagonal position of the candles have fallen on the floor. The continuity people should have paid better attention.

this is a story of reality
2 December 2000
Warning: Spoilers
This film is showing married life as it is. First the being in love period, the love and understanding and the fights that turn up over whatever stupid irritations one might have. The film is a good life saver for couples who want to split up. Watch this film and start talking. Find the similarity between the story as shown in the film and get together again. The final scene in which Michelle Pfeifer declares her love is a real classic one. Very fine acting.

Woman Wanted (1999)

the most boring movie I saw until now
26 November 2000
In this movie everything is wrong. The script is to bad for words. Why the characters behave like they do is unclear. Everything comes out of the blue. Even the continuity people were bored making this movie. In scene one there is a band aid on Kiefer Sutherlands head, then it is gone, and some time later it is back. Michael Moriarty is giving the worst performance of his lifetime and even Holly Hunter is walking around wondering why on earth she bothered to come to the set of this film. My advise: show this movie on film school in first grade and let students write an essay about everything that is wrong.

artistic wasteland
12 November 2000
This film really was boring. It took more than three hours to tell a story. What story? Was there a story. Was there a meaning behind the doings of these people? I could not find any. Running around not knowing what to do next. Moving along the feelings of an overexcited scriptwriter who thought that when people can't understand a film that it must be cultural high class. Leave this film alone. Don't rent or buy it.

make it 60 minutes shorter
12 November 2000
A nice film but way to long. It runs for 150 minutes or more. Cut sixty minutes out of the film and you have a strong story based in reality with very actual problems. Make more clear that everybody has a secret agenda and that there are only a few people in this world who really go for their beliefs. Al Pacino was convincing as Lowell Bergman. The other actors were very one-dimensional despite the long playing time of this film.

Simon Birch (1998)

laughing and crying
23 April 2000
Maybe I was in the right mood, but Simon Birch touched me yesterday evening. He is a dwarf. 12 years of age. He is in the hand of God who has a plan with him. This belief keeps him going. He is alone in the world, but he has a friend Joe. The way Simon is acting in his trust in the Lord is moving but is also a good laugh. Simon has a healthy interest in the opposite sex and when he is playing Jesus in the crib in the christmas play, the virgin Mary is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Simon reached his moment of glory. The end is tragic but gives even more inspiration. I recommend this film very strongly.

An amazing performance from Jim Carrey
12 March 2000
Jim Carrey's finest hour. This movie made me laugh and cry at the same time. The story of Andy Kaufman's life was unknown to me. In Holland we only had Taxi and most of the other things Andy Kaufman did we couldn't take notice of. But now in this retrospective all these things come together. Kaufman is portaited as a very sensitive person inside who created an outside of harshness. That is also the part that made me cry. Why was not he able to communicate a little better with himself, despite of all the effort he put in the transcendental meditation. Courtney Love is a surprise. She played a very good part. This movie is strongly recommendated.

Beloved (1998)
Be warned. This film is boring.
17 October 1999
The abolishment of slavery is a thing to remember. This very important historical fact is the starting point for this film. The film is however absolutely incomprehensible. Even more it is boring to the bone. Their is not a single shot in it which draws your attention to the screen. The story itself might deliver a nice book, but to sit for almost three hours looking at nothing is a pain you can hardly stand. Even the actors made a mess of it.

Nice charming love story with a lot of tears.
3 October 1999
Don't save love for a rainy day is a true thing to say. In this film love has been saved and in the end the lives of two people have been wasted to bitter tears. A true mistake of these people. But they had a mission. They had to protect the lives of their children. A nice film which deserve more viewers.

I've never seen a movie as bad as this one.
21 February 1999
I wanted to see this movie because of the release of you've got mail in Holland. A little history of the Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan films. I really liked Sleepless in Seattle. But this movie is really bad. It starts with a nondescript image of some factory. The complete mistake the director made is from the first second explicit. I think he wanted to make an art-movie, but looked for a compromise between art and money. Now it's neither art nor a blockbluster. I had a very bad evening. The average vote of 6.2 amazed me. Yargh!

I didn't see a movie which was so funny in two years.
3 January 1999
Melvin Udal is the main character. He is cynical, but he has a great sense of humor. Deep down inside Melvin Udal lives a nice man. The next day when the washing machine repair man came to my door to deliver a new machine and said not to take it upstairs, I repeated the words Melvin Udal said to his neighbours. Just some funny remarks to scare the simple repairman. I had to laugh when he was gone and saw Melvin Udals face. The film will keep my mind busy for a long time.
