Lebedyne ozero. Zona (1990)
The Reality Of Life In Soviet Era Ukraine.
This film tells what it was like to live in the USSR with brutal reality.
A convict is forced to hide within a model of a hammer and sickle. Here a tragic romance ensues between the convict and woman worker; which is spoilt by the woman's jealous young son.
The convict is then forced to undergo a tragic bid for freedom which ends with the beauty of swans contrasted with the imprisoned convicts and the hopeful but ultimately tragic wait by the woman for her lover.
Max et les ferrailleurs (1971)
Rough Cynical Police Tale Becomes Tender Love Story
This is a very well acted and directed police story about a French detective investigating a gang of thieves which is headed by an old friend of his. What begins as a cynical film about violence and prostitution turns into a tender love story.
Il Bacio di Tosca (1984)
Poignant Film About Theatre And Old Age
"Tosca's Kiss" is a documentary about elderly opera singers living in a specialized old people's home for opera singers and musicians. Now forgotten, but once noted performers remember their careers.
However the film is as much about old age as the theatre; as each performer introduced, talks about what they achieved in their careers; as well as what they couldn't achieve and the goals they couldn't achieve. In a holistic sense this film is about life.
Nicholas and Alexandra (1971)
Promise Never Materializes
While the two main actors who take the eponymous parts of "Nicholas And Alexandra" try hard to realize the real historical people behind their roles; this film could of been more of an artistic and historical success if the film had been better planned and scripted. Although the costume design is often breathtaking.
