Born Yesterday (1993)
The umpteenth remake of 'My Fair Lady'
While the movie is entertaining, it is not an unforgettable masterpiece. If you haven't got anything better to do it's not a bad way to kill time but don't expect this movie to be thought-provoking. Absurd as it may be, it is still interesting to watch how Melanie Griffith goes from being a bimbo to composing songs about the constitution and appreciating Van Gogh paintings. Don Johnson sort of blends into the background as Goodman wildly raves on and on shouts at everyone in sight while Griffith tries her best to prove that her character is more than just a pretty face.
Hugo Pool (1997)
Slow,slow,slow
The concept of the film was appealing in principle. However, the initial message got lost because at the end I was simply thankful that the movie was over. The characters were not so much 'deep' as they were stereotypes - there is your standard average dysfunctional family, an alcoholic father, a gambling self-centred mother, the cheerful and hardworking daughter along with a couple of odd-balls thrown in as a bonus. If it was supposed to be funny, the movie needed a slightly quicker pace. However, the acting was pretty good. The cast could have done wonders for this story if the script had been a little better.
A Life Less Ordinary (1997)
A Different Brand of Romance
This is not just another romantic comedy. The movie gradually degenerates into a graphic portrayal of violence which leaves no scope for romance as we know it. The pairing of the lead characters seems hardly believable. An actress of Cameron Diaz's calibre should have been given more to do than simply instruct Ewan McGregor on how to carry out a kidnapping. Speaking of whom, the movie never quite got around to explaining why a janitor in the middle of Anytown,USA spoke with a British accent! The angel gag was the only amusing part but even that had a corny ring to it.
Deconstructing Harry (1997)
Thinly Disguised Woody
The movie is really a mixed bag. On the one hand, there is the evergreen Woody Allen wit and humor with the help of an ensemble cast. And yet on the other hand, it is the same old predictably confused Woody playing himself through his character. Nevertheless, I think you need to watch the movie for yourself and find out if you are amused or bemused or both.
Blown Away (1992)
No real story to tell.
This is essentially a Nicole Eggert movie. It is disappointing to see this former Baywatch babe baring herself on camera just for the heck of it. The movie has a weak script, a confusing and cliched storyline and a lot of boring sex scenes. Even the soundtrack leaves something to be desired.
