Jennifer Beals and the Heavenly Music of Vinny Golia
22 January 2003
I watched this movie for Billy Zane, and fell in love with it for Jennifer Beals and the Wonderful Song "One Girl in a Million."

If you watch this movie and immediately don't buy Vinny Golia's CDs, you have much better control than I do.

Put up with the first ten minutes, and you'll be swept off your feet.

Intelligent Comedy....
8 November 2002
This movie has a lot of great references to past and future movies( e.g. Mars Attacks! which came a year after it.)

But one of my favorites is the "Don Polson" character, which so hilariously captures Jean Paul Sartre, that I was puzzled by the name ,until I said to my wife "I don't see why Jean Paul Sartre character is named Don Paulson!" .

Devious minds...

Revenge always does the most damage to the revenger...
26 November 2000
I couldn't help but keep thinking of "Elektra" as I watched this. The circle of guilt , blame, revenge, guilt.... It is wonderfully acted by all. Carrie Hamilton, Meredith Baxter and G. W. Bailey are perfect for the parts (even tho' in the first part of the movie I had my doubts about Meredith Baxter). It is a little disturbing to watch.

Bible as Literature
13 May 2000
This movie reminded me of the wonderful course "Bible as Literature" that was taught by the Late Nelson Bentley at University of Washington in 1973. It is wonderful. It is apparent that the writers have fully researched the Bible , since most of it it very accurate , yet admittedly anachronistic. The sense of humor brings out the complexities of the Bible. The acting is superb, which is finally able to bring out the subtlety and double meaning of many of the humorous passages in the bible. This is a refreshing movie after seeing such horribly over acted ( Charleton Heston) movies as the Ten Commandments. One wonders how the Ten Commandments would have been if Jon Voight has done it. I give this movie an 8.

One of our all time favorites
2 April 2000
The script/timing/acting in this movie is excellent, and is a great joy to watch. The perfect timing of the cast and an excellent story make this one of our favorites along with Fifth Element,American President, In and Out, The MatchMaker , The Local Hero and The Mystery Man..

The Loss and the coping
26 September 1999
The amazing thing about this movie is the insight into loss of love/parent/death/suicide(well OK that is not there but...)

I think it is very hard for those without loss/snakes in their past to appreciate this movie. This movie has been derided for not having a cathartic ending. However in real life there is no catharsis. My favorite statement is the one of Titanic survivors waiting for a redemption that never came. If you still suffer from snakes, watch this movie , and it will provide relief by not providing one. If you don't have any personal snakes to kill, then watch Sleepless in Seattle. You'll be better off.

Before it was PC ,John Ford danced with wolves.
14 June 1999
Long before "Dances With Wolves", John Ford dramatized the plight of the Indian much more realistically and in a period when it was not PC to do so. In a class with Ulzana's Raid, this movie is a must. Still waiting for it to come out in DVD.

Better pre-make of Pale Rider
6 November 1998
Ghost US Marshall comes back for revenge. Why does he bother? since he considers the whole town as scum? There is one scene of rape , by the Ghost , implying that he is no better than the scum he loathes. This is the best of the "Hang 'em High","Pale Rider", "Play Misty For Me", and even "The Unforgiven".

Very disturbing. I rate it 10 stars.
