Rebecca (1997)
British TV Masterpiece
This is just the thing to watch while curled up on the sofa with a hot cup of cocoa. Charles Dance is an absolute heart throb and young Emilia Fox's acting is outstanding! Jonathan Cake plays a convinvingly devilish Favell and Diana Rigg - well, what can I say?! This murder mystery suspense story is fantastic and a great favourite of mine. The lesbian innuendo between Mrs Danvers and Rebecca takes your breath away. This story must have been a shocker in its time - 1930's. I'd recommend it to anyone to watch it, you're guaranteed to be glued to your seat.
Empire of the Sun (1987)
Innocence turned survival
This has to be the best film I've seen in quite a while. Two scenes give me shivers on my skin every time I watch them. The part where Jim sings and salutes in the sunset while the Kamakazi pilots are preparing to get into their zeros. And the scene where Jim has a near face to face contact with the liberating American pilot - the slow motion of that scene is so poignant that my video on that part is almost rubbed off! What an amazing array of characters and situations thrown together by force. You are almost relieved that Jim is too young and innocent to face the terrible consequences of his predicament. His way of dealing with day to day life ensures his survival.
The English Patient (1996)
All in the mind's eye
You make TEP what it is. You either love it or hate it. There is no middle opinion. A soul searching film that wrenches your heart out of your body, chews it up and spits it back at you. There is no denying the power of pleasure and pain within stunning performances from actors, direction, soundtrack etc. You have to look deep beyond the plot to understand the intricacies of love and life and even after that it still leaves you wondering.
