Bubble Boy (2001)

Man, why why why?
7 December 2002
When I first saw the trailer for this I thought it was gonna be one of those not-so-stellar over-the-top comedies of lately. And indeed I was correct upon viewing it. There wasn't any major stars in it which was quite good for this low budget film.

There were many things I didn't like in this movie because it felt like it didn't flow and was illogical at some places. for instance, how could a boy (Jake Gyllenhaal) makes friends with a biker gang, a cult group of Todd and Lorraine, and Dr Phreak's people all coming together at the end to cheer on the poor boy for his courageous efforts to win the heart of the girl (Marley Shelton) whom he met at his house for a short duration.

Running a mere 84 mins, which I wanted to end faster, I really don't think this movie should deserve any praise simply because it's not funny when you poke fun at children who are immunodeficient. I'm pretty sure some people/critics find the movie overall to be quite funny, I on the other hand didn't. In fact, I don't know how this movie got made in the first place, let alone the drafting stage.

I'm only gonna be generous in the rating only because of the busty girls at that "500 dolla" place.

Not the best of the three...
6 December 2002
I didn't quite expect that the last of the trilogy (and I hope it's the last one) would be that good. And indeed my expectations were met! I knew this judging by the trailer on tv which didn't make me wanna go to the theatre and watch it. Hence, upon viewing it on video, I didn't quite enjoy myself as much as the other two. The first two were very good but alas the ideas and jokes in Goldmember were not amusing at all. I do agree somewhat with some of the comments about the jokes were dry because they were basically used up in the first two. Once these ideas were exhausted, what else can Mike Myers do to make the third of the trilogy to be even funny. By pulling in famous celebrities such as Cruise, Spielberg, and even Britney Spears does Mike expect the audience to laugh at?

Another complain is that Goldmember wasn't even used that much. In fact his role turned out to be important in the end but yet there was no character development for him as well as Foxxy Cleopatra. All the other characters feels like one dimension and what's with the mole? It was emphasized so much that it didn't need to be expressed. The only real character(s) I liked were Fat Bastard and Mini Me. Always a pleasure to have! And at the end when they show him losing most of the weight by some miracle diet that his stretched skin was showing and his neck looked like a vagina. That cracked me up. I also liked the music video while Dr. Evil and Mini Me was in jail depicting Jay-Z rapping style of "It's a Hard Knock Life". That was pretty good.

Overall, it's worth taking a look and only 1 look.

Rose Red (2002)
7/10
whoah ho!
5 December 2002
..and that is exactly right. I missed the miniseries on tv so I went out and rented it. I am fond of King's work and I have seen a couple of his earlier tv made series (ie The Stand, Langoliers) and they seemed quite interesting. Some not so interesting. I had some doubts that the premise of this series was gonna be one of those typical haunted house movies. In fact, there was more added to this such as character involvement, more chills and the story. No and I am not saying that Rose Red was good but it was okay overall.

I will however say this, Rose Red had some plot holes such as what happened to Pam? It's as if she went wondering outside for a midnight walk or something. It didn't really explained anything about her case. Second, there are some stupid people in the case where Cathy heds to the kitchen alone to get ice tea. What the hell is she thinking? I thought Joyce said to stick together. Third, there was no sympathy between the characters which made me want them all dead not to mention Emery's mom who I found was the most annoying person in this film.

But enough said, there were lots of holes and I strongly believe that if Stephen King had spent more time on the screenplay, this could have been something more and better than those other scary movies but didn't really hit it off. I know that a lot of people complained of the amount of time it took for the story to unfold (precisely a little over 4 hours), but for me it felt kinda short. Time just flew by as I was watching it or maybe I had a lot of time to kill.

What I like about the movie is that it had some spine tingling scenes but not over the top gory stuff, the internal design of the house, the dark atmoshere as soon as the psychic people arrived, and the age of the mansion which helps set up the spookiness of the film. Overall, I thought Rose Red was not the greatest but not the worst, but was alright.

Signs (2002)
Good Sci-fi/drama summer flick of 2002
29 August 2002
Warning: Spoilers
I have seen this movie with some friends and I can honestly say that this film had to be one of the best summer movie of 2002. The other being Minority Report. Both excellent in its respective genre. Some of my friends didn't like it simply because they didn't understand the double meaning of the word Sign and to those that think the movie is about aliens, well it's not. It's more than that and I won't give out any spoilers. I am just here to give my comments of why this film was amazing.

First, Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix were superb as well as the children which I thought did an excellent job.

Second, the story-telling and the build-up of suspense was the main emphasis of this movie compared to other thrill-and-scare movies where they were not as great.

Third, I like how the film focuses on just Hess's family because otherwise, if M Night had blended other elements like the news media, the neighbors, and the whole sort, then the audience would have been totally lost. But then again, M Night was being careful not to include those things.

Overall, I enjoyed this film. I'm not sure about what my friends think but nothing I can say will change their minds. Even if I explain to those the underlying meaning, they would stand by their comment. I guess if you're gonna trash talk Signs, AT LEAST back it up with some reasoning. It doesn't mean I have to agree, just say why you didn't like it. If you can't, then you're either full of it or you want to be the odd man out.

I'd give this movie (Signs) 9/10

Bring It On (2000)
10/10
A Pleasing Good Time
9 January 2002
Bring it on was by far one of the best teen comedies that has ever came to the big screen and we rarely get a good decent comedy in this genre that is funny with a good story and highly entertaining. The actors were great and best of all the dance sequence were the highlight of the movie (oh and plus the girls too!). I was really amazed by the cheerleading because up here, we don't have that stuff in highschool nor college/university :(

I am really beginning to appreciate Kirsten Dunst as a real super duper actor which probably some of you might know or don't care that I strongly believe that she is one of the most underrated actresses in today's business in the movie industry. She has outshine many of her competitors through which I've seen many flip-flops in the past. Several to name are Tara Reid, Rebecca Gayheart, Freddy Prinze Jr (sorry, I gotta pick on a guy for this one). These so-called potentials have never made it big nor will their career lift off. In addition, her credentials in movies include The Virgin Suicides, Wag the Dog, Spiderman, and many more.

There were some other hot actors for example Eliza Dushku who worked on the Buffy: The Vampire Slayer show before she exited and I bet there were more but awe well. Well, what I really wanted to say is that I really enjoyed this film mainly because it made me laughed and it was quite good. A good teen movie like this one comes not so often but some have really captured my eyes such as Get Over It, Final Destination, and a couple more which I forget. So, for those that is going to see the movie, Bring It On, just watch it for the entertainment because I know for a fact that this movie won't get any Oscar nods or any other awards for that matter and for those that saw it, I have this one question, "Why do you compare it to other acclaim dramas like A Beautiful Mind, The Green Mile?" when you know that teen romance/comedies is not the same as a drama. They're two separate entities and critics must take apart everything piece-by-piece and look for things like character development, intricate plot/story, mise-en-scene, and so forth. Does every movie have to have an Oscar calibre? Think of the world of only dramas where each individual movie is Oscar material. So, in closing, just enjoy the movie for what it is okay?

Spectacular Visuals
30 December 2001
When I went to see this movie, I already knew that this movie would blow me away and it did. Having heard people talk about it a lot and how good the book was (I never read either of Tolkien's books) made me feel that I should go watch it and I did. Even though it was 3 grueling hours, I never look back and regret anything. The movie is a masterpiece on its own and I can't wait for the next two chapters in the epic installment. The cast were great, each acted how they were supposed to and I have to give props to Peter Jackson for his vision and his appeal to the Tolkien fans. Well done!

The one thing I like about the LOTR is the visual. The scenery were awesome and I like how each visual depicts a scene for instance, the place where the orcs live showed a dark and gloomy atmosphere contrasted to the light and breath taking view of the hobbits home.

For those that saw this movie but didn't like it, at least appreciate how much work and effort that went into making the movie and I'm pretty sure that a movie like LOTR can't satisfy everybody's likings.
