Star power
11 January 1999
A good thing about movies made after John Grisham's novels that they have very good picks for lead actors. Same thing we can see in Firm (Tom Cruise and Gene Hackman), Client (Susan Surandon and Tommy Lee Jones), Rainmaker (Matt Damon and Danny De Vito). This time they are Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington.

Pelican Brief is the story of corruption in the highest levels of authority that leads to assassinations of two Supreme Court judges. A law student Derby Shaw (Julia Roberts) creates her own real theory of this case and, as a corollary, puts her life into a serious danger. The only person who can help her is a reporter Gray Grantham (Denzel Washington).

I consider this movie as well-made thrilling investigation politic law story. Julia Roberts had played such a convincing character of a strong weak woman that later was recreated in the Net by Sandra Bullock. As for Denzel Washington, which is my favorite actor, he did it again. He gave a true example of a reporter, that fights for sensations, however sets the humanity and justice on the front plan. Rating is 8 out of 10.

Groundhog Day (1993)

Our life is what we think of it
10 January 1999
When two people have to fall in love, they'll do that anyway. Like in this story, selfish and sarcastic weatherman Phil (Bill Murray) relives the same day (Groundhog Day) over and over again. He falls in love and despair simultaneously. But being inspired by that love, he makes this day perfect. As a result, he turns into a better man and gains an ability to be loved.

This funny and romantic comedy allows us to believe that our life is just what we really think of it. Rating is 10 out of 10.

The moment of shine
28 December 1998
Human being is a weak God's creature. Hard childhood, forfeiting and cruelty can affect you so you'll be doomed for the rest of your life. But there is something that makes people great. It's an ability to create or as we say talent. Given by God it can't be destroyed by a human. Neither insanity nor therapy nor other people can ruin this will to express things coming out of heart and soul, things that make you shine…

Geoffrey Rush (David Helfgott) has deserved Oscar for his astonishing performance. Good words also for Armin Mueller-Stahl who has managed to transmit not less composite image of a David's father. Yeah and I saw David Helfgott at the Oscar, he was shining… Rating is 10 out of 10.

The greatest basketball player world has never known.
18 November 1998
Have you ever done a slam-dunk? Did you feel this triumph over the gravitation, height and fear? There are or there were persons who does or did it better. People will always remember players like Michael Jordan, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson. Will they remember the most celebrated streetball player Earl 'Goat' Manigault who has never played in NBA? This movie shows Earl Manigault not just as an idolized legend, but a person with his weakness, fear and shame. Jumping up and falling down are the opposite sides of complicated Earl's life. This is at least fair that 'Rebound' has been developed when Earl 'Goat' Manigault was alive. Everybody has his bottom line, but there are few persons who can get through it and find the way out. Earl was the one. I appreciated a play by Don Cheadle as Earl Manigault.

Serious, dramatic and fun movie for those who like basketball and not just it... Rating: 10 of 10.

Is this a perfect world?
5 November 1998
Butch Haynes (Kevin Costner) escapes from the prison and takes a little boy as a hostage. The question is not where he is going to, the question is why he is going there. Somehow, Butch Haynes tries to return the family life he was practically deprived of… Little boy who just like Butch grows without a father finds in him an older friend, a father… But still Haynes is a criminal, that is being chased by cliche like sheriff Red Garnet (Clint Eastwood) and his smart colleague Sally Gerber (Laura Dern).A Long way to a perfect world with a money just as paper, green grass, and the mask of friendly ghost Casper… Convincing performance by Kevin Costner and successful work of Clynt Eastwood as a director make this movie one of the best for family watching. Rate is 10 of 10.
