The Mummy (1999)
Smashing!
12 May 1999
Ok all you wannabe film critics, this movie was made to be a fun film, not one that is supposed to be in the running for a slew of academy awards so lighten up please. The Mummy also is not ripping of Indiana Jones films either. What it IS,is a new twist on an old tale made popular way back in the 1930s by Universal Studios.Brendan Frasier and Rachel Weize are the hero and heroine of the picture and they do their characters justice throughout the entire film. The Mummy named Ihmotep has been given more power and mystique courtesy of Lucasfilms Industrial Light and Magic with highly enjoyable results. So folks, keep in mind that Indiana Jones or the original mummy films should not be used to judge this film by.For if you do so,be prepared for a let down. However,if you see this film without such pre-determinations,you should be able to enjoy this much needed hit from the studio that gave movie monsters their first shining moments six decades ago.

Entrapment (1999)
8/10
Yea Baybee!
8 May 1999
Since i am both a Sean Connery and a Catherine Zeta Jones fan, this movie was an automatic must see for me.Neither Connery or Jones disappointed me in their character roles but that is to be expected from Connery anyway.Sean is a cat burgular who is hunted by Jones who wants to catch him in the act so she can receive all the spoils for apprehending him. However, unknown to her boss, she actualy idolizes Connery and is a thief herself.Since Sean was the very first and really only james bond(although one user said he isn't)he already had it easy when it came down to being suave and a charmer.Catherines skills as an acomplished dancer gave her the edge for being agile and gracefull.Especially when it came to dodging security lasers.Ving Rhames adds a slighty comical element to the movie when apropriate. If you enjoy movies where the main characters seem to actually enjoy working together and the film isnt dependant on huge explosions to distract from a weak or non existant storyline then Entrapment is the movie for you.

Spice World (1997)

campy
17 March 1999
Spice World reminds me of those fab four movies of the 60s. Those movies were primairly made for their fans. The same can be said for Spice World: a Hard Day's Night 1997, but with 5 lovelies instead of 4 mop toped guys. If you try to take this movie too seriously then you will miss the point: it's not supposed to be that way folks. Enjoy this film for what it brings to Spice lovers around the globe, silly fun and nothing more.

The Rock (1996)

an all time great
14 February 1999
i was pleased to see that the rock doesn't depend TOO much on guns, missiles and brawlin. ed harris does well as a marine who has tired of the government draggin its feet on giving restitution to the soldiers he has lost during his tours of duty. his only option he sees is to hold san francisco ransom with nervegas missiles or pay several million toward his cause. cage is also well suited as a lab rat recruited by the feds to help bring down ed harris and his hired mercs.sean connery like ed harris also has a dinosaur sized bone to pick with the feds from being jailed for 30 years without a trial for having evidence the g'ment wants hidden.last but not least, lovely vanessa marcil is cages soon to be wife who has just told him of their expected child.although her part in the film is not very large,it only makes you wanna jump through the screen and do the "grab you cha cha cha" with her when she does appear. only one person seems to have not enjoyed this film that i saw.perhaps he too has been screwed by the government had has yet to hold a city ransom and meet his demands.oh well.

important film
13 February 1999
higher learning is a slap in the face for those of us that have been in the closet too long regardless of ethnic background. it's a subject most of us would like to ignore but we cannot afford to if there is to be a real progressive change in the way we HAVE TO be able embrace and understand diversity.some have criticized this film as hateful or dumb but the fact of the matter is, ignorance reigns supreme in the world and several continue to help it dominate our society.everyone involved in this film has done a good deed in showing what steps must continue to be done in order to not have to make anymore films like higher learning.sure it sounds like a pipe dream but we have to start somewhere and this helps.

The Avengers (1998)

Could have been better
6 February 1999
I don't know what went wrong between the screen writers and the finished product, but I do know that the Avengers deserved a better showing than this one. I'm not going to be as nasty and inconsiderate as some others have been toward the actors because its not their doing. What they were given was not enough to satisfy. Provided that Ralph Fiennes, Uma Thurman and Sean Connery were cast correctly, which is true, this should have been a memorable jaunt back to one of the definitive spy shows from the 60s. I truly believe that they should do another film to make up for this one. Maybe then, the cast members can hold their heads up high and say "Yes, I was a part of this."

The Patriot (1998)

it works
27 January 1999
every now and then we get so used to seeing someone portrait a certain persona so much that we tend to be disappointed, turned off or act like a spoiled brat when there is a change.as goes the seagal movie the patriot.many have dogged this movie and also fire down below as the worst or pure garbage.folks judge for yourself but don't try to compare this movie to his earlier action heavy flicks or else you will miss the point of the film and will not broaden any perspectives you can achieve when watching films in a objective manor.with that said,i can enjoy this film for what it is,a seagal film with more plot than mindless action as usual.

i enjoyed it
27 January 1999
unlike most of seagal's earlier films with almost too much action, fire down below takes its time to weave another true to life tale of the abuse done to our earth by corporate americia. folks, this kind of stuff goes on everyday and it's films like these sneak a message into you without beating you over the head with it.those who are expecting plenty of guns and bodies flying all over the place every 5 seconds will be disappointed, but those who have a better view of the movie genre can enjoy this film better.

best action film
17 January 1999
this has got to be the best action film to date.while most don't have much plot to go on,the long kiss has a rock solid plot that gets more interesting as you go along. samuel l. jackson is perfect as the private snoop that helps geena davis fit the pieces to the puzzle. this is a must see for action nuts like myself.

memorable
17 January 1999
when i first saw this film on hbo, it caught my attention as one of those films that you either get into or change the channel.in this case i couldnt change because it turned out to be a well done dark comedy of the players getting played and what's right conquering the wrong.everyone in this film played their part well.james spader made you despise him, danny aielo caused you to change your initial view, charlize theron made you want to jump through the screen, and you had to love the famous by now cat fight between her and terri hatcher.dont pass this one by folks, see it.

car lovers fantasy
17 January 1999
the hollywood knights incorporates the cream of the crop when it comes to killer rides, laugh till you cry pranks and gags, as well as a major stepping stone for many of tinseltowns now famous stars like tony danza, michelle pffeifer and fran dresher.i just hope that sony pictures will finally put an end to the suffering of the fans of this film and release it to homevideo.it was released by coloumbia originally(part of sony now) in 1980.19 years is too long to let a gem like this go unmined.

good noir
16 January 1999
i was glad to see this film incorporating actors male and female who are in the prime of their life, but not being prematurely dead and buried.in other words, older folks still like a good sex, murder and scandel flix just like the younger ones,so why not have them act out the parts as well.besides women like susan serandon and stockard channing get better with age and i dare say sexier.guys like paul newman, james garner and gene hackman haven't lost a step when it comes to doing their thing.this film tells a good tale of a murder that happened long ago that was covered up by those with the money to do so.it's up to newman to finally bring closure to the case.newman got his first taste of being a private dick in 1966 in harper as lew harper, followed by the drowning pool several years later.

wonderful
13 January 1999
when i saw this movie when it was released as a mini series,i was elated to find that this italian mafia film had plenty of sustenance and not filler like many minis do.plot was strong, acting well done, and all the ladies were gorgeous.i'm ready for a second installment, like a book II perhaps.

one of the great ones
13 January 1999
im a big fan of film noir and lovelies so this film definitely struck a chord with me.plot is firm and suspense is right in line with movies like chinatown and harper with paul newman.jennifer tilly never fails to entice her male following and neither does gina gershon.joe pantoliano is perfect as the hood without a clue to the heist and eventual double cross that is always prevalent in movies such as bound.take a bow jennifer, gina, and joe.you earned it.

The Mask (1994)
a future classic
13 January 1999
the way the producers laid out the movie version of the mask, will definitely make it one of the films people will buy/rent for quite some time.jim carrey basically plays himself to a degree:spontaneous, wacky and a pure clown of a comedian.cameron diaz shines bright in her first major role of her budding movie career.max the dog(milo) should also see plenty of work after his faithful and fearless performance.the soundtrack also deserves praise when most are a big letdown, not this time folks.

Peter Gunn (1958–1961)
mr. cool
13 January 1999
although i didn't get to see pete do his thing when the show originally aired from 1958-61 i have thoroughly enjoyed watching the released episodes on homevideo.peter gunn has the smoothest demeanor about the cases he works, but when he gets riled, look out.he can spar with the best of them.i'm sure it helps his image to be dating the pretty night club singer at the local scene called mothers.this way,it doesn't seem like he's just a hood bustin machine, but also a loverboy on the side.henry mancini does wonders for this show with its slick "crime jazz" that sets the tone at the beginning of each episode.i recommend anyone who is into police or detective stories to get into pete if they haven't already.
