Happiness (1998)
Dysfunctional has never been this stupid...
14 July 1999
I consider myself a lover of bad taste. Such issues as ejaculation, masturbation or any form of sex can usually be generated into something funny. Films like There's Something About Mary, American Pie and even one hilarious scene in 1994's Serial Mom was just laugh out loud funny.

Unfortuanately, I cannot say the same for this movie. Painfully boring, blatantly stupid and some of the worst, underwritten characters I have ever seen.

I'm sorry, but a grown man talking to his kid about having sex with a little boy is just not funny. How can someone laugh about this? I know children who have been sexually molested before, and it's just not funny. Even if the characters would have played the scene in an outrageous stunt, it still wouldn't have been funny.

Avoid this film! It is one of the worst movies I have ever, ever had to endure. Slow, dumb, stupid, moronic, ignorant, and not even worthy as a paperweight.

It just plain bites!

A surprisingly sweet movie!
30 March 1999
I'll admit that amongst my rabid obsession with horror films and morbid dramas, lies a deep love for witty romance films.

I loved this one.

The dialogue and characterization was surprisingly well done, and the story, although old, was played out well.

The cast was excellent, too. Ione Skye is so beautiful, and very talented. She played the lonely girl perfectly. I cannot imagine a better actress for her part...her eyes said something to me while watching, as did her heart and soul she put into this role. Jennifer Aniston, whom I'm not a big fan of, was actually well written, and her knack for switching accents though out the film was quite funny. The standout character was David, played by Mackenzie Astin.

He's a nice guy, plain and simple. His dialogue was witty, charming, and never went over the pretentious mark. His character actually meant something to me, and for once, I agreed with his role. I think he has a bright future ahead of him, and I even think he is a better actor than his older sibling, Sean.

I loved the romance that built between David and Frankie. Even though we have seen this kind of mushy clap trap on screen several times before, it just seemed to work differently here.

Overall, this is a surprisingly sweet, well acted and non-pretentious romance film that deserves more recognition.

I loved it, very much.

Fallen (1998)
Slow, but overall a good film...
29 March 1999
Although slow at times, this film is a wonderful thriller full of drab colors and eerie moments.

Denzel Washington turns in a fine performance as Detective John Hobbes, and the supporting cast is great as well.

The story is excellent and the Azazal chase scene through the streets was intense.

For those who love anti Hollywood films, this is for you. The ending is great, and the surprise twist made me drop my jaw to the floor.

I just can't wait to see if Arlington Road's ending can outdo this one.

Time...is on my side...

The greatest war film ever made...
28 March 1999
I cannot understand why critics and viewers alike shunned this film. It is filled with heart, beauty and soul. This is not a film about war (even though the backdrop is)...it is a film about your own personal wars. The cinematography and direction was simply amazing, and the acting was superb, especially by Koteas and Chaplin. There was so much symbolism in this film that many people either missed, or where too dumbed down from Saving Private Ryan to understand. I did not care for Saving Private Ryan because I could not care about the story, or the cast. I felt for everyone in this film. I felt for the personal demons inside everyone. The poetic sceenplay is remarkable, and the flow of the film was free at all time. Many people stated that this picture bored them, made them wish they wouldn't have spent their money. Me? I think these people are just too much into the Hollywood drivel to actually pay attention to a good story. Everything doesn't have to be all special effects and in your face violence. I truly loved this film.

Die Hard 2 (1990)
They say sequels never outdo the original...they were wrong...
27 March 1999
Die Hard 2 is an explosive, action packed thrill ride from the beginning to the very end.

From being boosted out of a plane loaded with grenades, to fighting the head terrorist on the wing of the plane, John Mclane (Willis) kicks us in full gear as the best action hero of the century.

Sure, 1 and 3 where good, but they lacked something that this one has. I don't know what it is or how to explain it, but this has it...whatever it may be.

Contains a very realistic plane crash, a good guy who not only battles terrorists, but a deadly winter storm and corrupt officials. The bad guy has much, much more menace than 1 and 3, and the story is fantastic, even if it is slightly hokey.

This is one of the best action films ever made...if not the best.

Watch this for Alfredo...
18 March 1999
This was a pretty silly movie, and nowhere near as good as the original. Although, what really makes this movie a classic is Alfredo, played by Tom Everett. He was so hilarious as the perverted gas manager who had a penchant for talking to himself throughout the entire film. THUMBS UP Just because of this character!

Commando (1985)
The greatest action film ever made...come on Bennett...let's party...
27 February 1999
If anyone overlooks this as the greatest action movie ever made, well you need to go back, sit down and watch this film. Sure, Die Hard and Lethal Weapon mixed the formula, but this flick set the standards. I mean come on...do you really think this could happen? Do you really think those plot holes and bloopers where on accident? Do you really think the lines were this cheesy on purpose? Nope, not at all. This is what true comedy and action should be...from Arnie ripping a phone booth out of the wall, from invading an island and killing an entire army all by himself.

This is THE action movie of the century!

Come on Bennett...let's party...

Scream 2 (1997)
It's good...but...
25 February 1999
...it's not as good as the first. I read the first draft script on the internet when all the hype was up about this film, and was surprised at how good it was. I waited, and waited, and when I went to see it, things changed. Many a scene was deleted, newer scenes where put in over the cut stuff, and the ending was totally different than the draft I read. The climatic showdown and the revelation of the killer was a huge dissapointment. Although the acting was super in this film by every single person, the film just lacked depth and creativity. The first was good...not the best by far, but good. This is just borderline good, kinda dull. Maybe the ending was the way it was because they wanted it that way...you know, sequels suck? Maybe that was a sly nod...who knows.

BASEketball (1998)
Well...
24 January 1999
Well...what can I say? Sure, I hate South Park. I never liked Trey Parker and Matt Stone. I hated the legions of fans that supported South Park. Well, the hatred for South Park hasn't changed, but I have found a new love for Trey and Matt. These guys are absolutely hysterical, especially Trey Parker, who had my sides splitting by the time he was listening to the song in the car. BASEketball is a great movie, and surprisingly hilarious. I figured it would be stupid. I was wrong. There was just something about the gags, characters, references and cameos that made me hoot for joy. Trey Parker, I think you rock, and I hope to see you in more films. You remind me of me, before the weight of the world crushed my spirits. SQUEAK!

A Simple Plan (1998)
Absolutely brilliant...
24 January 1999
A simple plan can go wrong with a snap of the fingers, and that's exactly what happens in Sam Raimi's new film. Raimi, whom I've been a huge fan of since his Evil Dead days, has absolutely outdone himself with the direction of this film, and every single character was real. Bill Paxton should receive an Oscar nomination as should Billy Bob Thornton, who was absolutely amazing as the slow witted brother who manages to screw things up at every turn. There are more twists and turns than you can shake a stick at, and even though the ending was a downer, it was brilliantly true to real life. There is also a tragic twist ending that basically says "You don't always get what you try for". Even though it's tragic, it's true and you can't help but laugh about it...even though it is sad. This is one of the best films ever made. Period.

Evil Dead II (1987)
Over the top fantastic...
22 January 1999
This is my all time favorite horror film. I've seen many, many horror films, and by looking at my shelf, you can see for yourself, but this one outdoes any I've ever seen. Bruce Campbell goes over the top as Ash, the tormented hero. Although the first one and third are very good, this one is a sure classic. The gore is absolutely hilarious, as are the black comedy gags and one-liners, and the ending is a knock out. Bruce Campbell surely deserves more credit than he receives, and if most of the mainstream saw this film, I'm sure they would see Bruce's talent and start casting him in more flicks. Do not miss this one. It's the best of all time!

Titanic (1997)
One word comes to mind...overrated...
15 December 1998
Titanic. One word I am sick to death of hearing. Jim Cameron, who has the biggest ego on the face of the earth, has only done three good films as far as I'm concerned, and they are The Terminator, The Abyss and True Lies. I would add Strange Days, but he had a small part of it. Back to Titanic. Why is this movie so talked about and loved? I'm sure it's the mass hysteria over Leo Dicrappio's cute little girly face that charmed female teen audiences, or Kate Winslet's breast shots. First off, I did not care for any character on this boat. None. Zilch. So, therefore, I was relieved when the ship sank and the heartless, snobs drowned. Note to movie makers: If you're going to make a film like this, give the characters some depth, and life, instead of flashing their cute smiles and snobby attitudes, and then maybe you'll have a halfway decent movie. Secondly, why was Boogie Nights shunned, when it was a far superior film than this. And why wasn't Russell Crowe nominated for Best Actor, and why oh why did this win so many Oscars? I'm crying now. This is a travesty on movie goers everywhere. They expect someone like me, who thinks he has some sort of brain to swallow this garbage? It makes me look like a fool to watch it. It also has come to my attention that since this is the biggest film of all time (puh-lease), that everyone is trying to milk it for every penny. Titanic t-shirts, jewelry, puzzles, novelty items, you name it, it's being done. I could go on and on about this, but I won't. So to sum it all up, I hate this movie. I hate it. I hate everything about it. I detest it. I despise every single thing about it. I hate, hate, hate, hate, hate this movie! I hate it so much that whenever I see a commercial for it, I am tempted to throw my remote control at the television and smash it. Yes, I hate this movie. I hate it. I hate it. I hate it so damn much. I hate it.

Wow...
4 December 1998
What a twisted film we have here. I thought "Happy Birthday To Me" had a "Scooby Doo" plot, but this one takes the cake. Some excellent gore and nifty direction by Mario Bava make this one a classic. This film even inspired the first two Friday the 13th films. I couldn't possibly say much without giving the plot away, so watch it for yourself. Unless you are a fan of black humor, then stay away from this, because the ending will not only come way the hell out of left field, but will leave you in hysterics!

Twisty, scary and clever slasher film...
2 December 1998
One of the best slasher movies ever made. The story is wonderful, the acting fantastic and the cinematography spectacular. Twenty years ago, a tragic accident in the Hanniger mine on St. Valentine's Day took the lives of five miners. The disaster occurred while the supervisors left their posts to attend the town's annual Valentine's Day dance. The only survivor, Harry Warden, was confined to a mental institution after the ordeal. On the disaster's first anniversary, he returned to the town for bloody revenge. He leaves a message in blood saying to never hold another Valentine's Day dance again. That was nineteen years ago, and memories have dimmed. A Valentine's Day dance is scheduled after 20 years, and the towns people couldn't be more excited. Soon, a blood soaked heart and a message saying to stop the dance appears. Before the night is over, terror will strike, again, and again, and again...

Simply in my top ten list of the best horror films ever made. The body count is fantastic and quite creative. The final scenes in the mine are some of the creepiest scenes ever filmed, and will leave you breathless. Try not to come to a conclusion about the ending, because the clever twist ending goes over the top.

Captivating, breathtaking and compelling...
23 November 1998
The Shawshank Redemption is, without a doubt, the greatest film ever made. You simply will never find a better film, ever.

The story revolves around a smart, kind hearted vice president of a bank named Andy Dufresne, played by Tim Robbins, who is absolutely brilliant in the starring role. Andy is sent to prison after murdering his wife and lover. Claiming he is innocent of the crimes, and was the victim of an unfortunate coincidence, the law does not believe him, and sentences him to life in prison without possibility of parole. Once inside, he immediately befriends a criminal by the name of Red, played brilliantly by Morgan Freeman. Andy then becomes the victim of fear, despair, and the prison itself, which is inhabited by crooked officials and hardened criminals. After a while, Andy finds the hope inside of him to never give up, with the help of his friend Red and others. He starts doing tax returns for the prison guards and the warden, and after a while, the warden, played by Bob Gunton, who makes the viewer loathe the word warden, has Andy doing his tax fraud for him. It's safe to say that Andy is "friends" with the officials.

I don't want to give it away for those of you who haven't seen this picture, but believe me, you will be breathless. The hope Andy holds inside of him gives all of us a warm feeling inside of us, and tells you to never give up. The cast is perfect in every way, and the film just carries beautifully. You will find yourself praying for Andy through the whole film, through bad times and even good times. It is wonderfully capped off with a surprise twist ending that will leave you shocked, stunned and emotionally breathless.

I call this film my all time favorite, because I agreed with the characters, felt for them, hoped for them and in the case of the corrupt characters, loathed them, due to great acting. I was able to actually hate and detest certain characters, because that's how wonderful the acting is. I would actually have cried at this movie, if it weren't for me being so emotionally paralyzed by the cast and story.

Armageddon (1998)
Action packed, and well acted...
14 November 1998
Cool "Die Hard" meets "Deep Impact" film starring Willis as the leader of a crew of yokels who must thwart a comet from destroying earth. Good special effects and a crisp story make this film one of the better action films of the 90's.

Scary, dark and fun!
14 November 1998
It doesn't take a Wes Craven or a Kevin Williamson to make a good horror film. Take The Final Terror, a dark and scary film set in the woods. The cinematography is excellent, as are the surprises.
