Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (1993)
I have to say that disappointment was the word.
Well, it was nice to see Jason away from the clutches of Paramount and onto what i hoped was to be a whole new slew of Friday films as produced by the home of Freddy Kruger, New Line. After going opening night back in the summer of 93, i have to say that disappointment was the word. Jason is killed by the FBI at the opening of the film, then possesses any poor soul who happens to walk by to be re-born back in Crystal Lake. Jason is in the film for the grand total of about 7 to 10 minutes. The rest is a cheesy rip-off of the Hidden. There are good elements like the always dependable Kane Hodder, an ok cast of Hollywood has-beens and never were's and, at least on video, alot of blood and gore on the uncensored tapes. New Line has to learn that people, like myself want old style Friday's, people don't want Jason is space, they don't want him missing for 80 minutes of the movie, in other words, do NOT mess with the old school Friday formula if you want profits...
Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989)
What sounded silly on paper looks even sillier on film!
Well well well...it appears ol' Jason is bored of Camp Crystal Lake and has taken to the high seas to attack the Love Boat! What sounded silly on paper looks even sillier on film! There are some saving graces, like Kane Hodder's performence as Jason, which is excellent as always. However, there are many mistakes, like Jason's appearance which is totally different altogether from when we last seen him a year before in Part VII. Jason was NOT wearing gloves at the end of the previous film, also the flashbacks of Jason as a boy contrast with the appearence given him in Part I. Plus, sorry to ruin things for first time viewers...Jason spends all of about hmmm 5 minutes in the Big Apple, that's it! This was the last of the Paramount Friday's and by watching this it is easy to see why.
Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood (1988)
This time Jason faces a young girl named Tina...
This entry was the start of the producers finding new adversaries for Jason to face and new situations for Crystal Lake's resident madman to deal with. This time Jason faces a young girl named Tina who comes equipped with special powers ala Carrie and she unintentionally unleashes Jason from his watery grave. This is a different Jason than we are used to seeing as his bones and massive amounts of flesh are now hanging off his body, also this was Kane Hodder's first stab at the role of Jason and he along with Part 3's Richard Brooker stand head and toe above all other Jason's. Sadly, this is probably the worst censored Friday of the entire series as the MPAA demanded cut after cut, if we are so lucky when Paramount ever decides to put out special editions of the Friday films, this should be one of the first to be revisited.
Jason Lives: Friday the 13th Part VI (1986)
Next to the epic, Friday The 13th Part III, this is one of the better entries in the Friday epic!
Next to the epic, Friday The 13th Part III, this is one of the better entries in the Friday epic! The producers had to improve on Part V, so they traded in some of the grue of the earlier sequels and concentrated on laughs and well placed sight gags. The action takes place some time after Part V as Tommy escapes from the institution and digs up the rotting corpse of Jason Voorhees, guess what happens next? No need to answer as ol' Jay goes on a rampage the likes of which this series had never seen before or since. Also, Jason is no longer in the shadows of Camp Crystal Lake, he is allowed alot of screen time and is given a personality, complete with head twitches and gestures, something that would be improved and expanded upon by Kane Hodder in future Friday installments. A good way to spend a rainy day or a dark night in front of the tv, now go rent!
Friday the 13th: A New Beginning (1985)
This is 92 minutes of your life that well, you will never have back again...
Well, Paramount could not leave weel enough alone eh? Knowing there were still more dollars to be had, they unleashed Friday The 13th Part V on un unsuspecting world in 1985. Ok, no Jason is NOT in this film, the actions does not take place at Camp Crystal Lake, but rather at a halfway house for troubled teenagers. Of all the Friday's and this is saying something, this must have the worst cast of all ten flicks! However, all is not lost as it becomes an unintentional comedy of the highest order! Ethel and Junior are annoying, but beyond hilerious, as well as Dudley from Different Strokes playing Reggie The Wreckless! Watch out for those screams! This is 92 minutes of your life that well, you will never have back again...
Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984)
One of the best entries in the Friday series.
One of the best entries in the Friday series. This time Jason, following the events of part III escapes from a local morgue and wrecks further havoc on a group of unsuspecting teens and a family of three who live next door. Plenty of blood and gore follow Jason's path until the victims are down to next to none. Paramount was originally going to end the series here, but the high box office total would make them unleash Part V on the world hardly a year later. If the series were to have ended here, this would have been a fitting finale.
Friday the 13th (1980)
This film makes the most of its woodsy atmosphere and dark lighting.
This is the original, gory slasher flick! What Halloween had going for it with well written characters and atmosphere, Friday The 13th makes up for it with Gore and manipulative shocks. This film makes the most of its woodsy atmosphere and dark lighting. The young cast try hard, amongst them is a pre stardom Kevin Bacon. The killer is a well kept secret as there are several red herrings given and the ending is next to Carrie, one of the most shocking in horror movie history. Kudos to the production team, including a tour de force job done by Tom Savini's make up crew. Now on wiht the show and on to Part II!!!
Jason X (2001)
Kane Hodder still has what it takes as Jason.
Wow! A Friday film that is made for the fans! Jason is thawed out in the future and wrecks havoic on a spaceship! There are plenty of twists and turns and some truly horrific kills! Kane Hodder still has what it takes as Jason and this film must boast what i consider to be one of the most attractive Friday female casts ever! There is a great homage to Camp Crystal Lake and an upgrade to Jason that has to be seen to be believed! Anyways a great time at the movies! Hey Jason, glad to see you back!
The Party Animal (1984)
This is the party film that made all of my friends want to go to college
During the glory days of the 1980's and the Beta machine there was but one raunchy comedy that stood above the others, that comedy would be the Party Animal staring Matthew Causey. This is the party film that made all of my friends want to go to college. The movie is fast paced, shot in documentry style recalling the life of Pondo Sinatra and his ill-fated quest for college women. Pondo, as played by Causey, is slimy, but yet lovable. Good support comes from his friends Studly and Elbow, the Janitor. Another thing to add is that the soundtrack to this movie is simply awesome!! The music of the Buzzcocks fits all of Pondo's misfortunes. I have also heard that Matthew Causey is a Professor at a university somewhere and does not take well to any mention of this film. Too bad, it would be great to see someone like Anchor Bay snap up the rights to this classic and put it out on DVD, complete with a commentary from Causey..AKA Pondo Sinatra and other goodies.
Friday the 13th Part III (1982)
Richard Brooker is on a par with Kane Hodder for the honours of who the best Jason is.
Without a doubt, my favorite Friday movie of all time! Richard Brooker is on a par with Kane Hodder for the honours of who the best Jason is. The setting goes away from the camp and settles in a remote region called Higgins Haven, this time it is not only some college kids, including my all time favorite Friday character, Shelly the lovable loser with the world's coolest afro, but some bikers getting in on the action as well. Sadly, i was unable to see this classic on the silver screen in all of its three dimensional glory back in the slasher hayday of 1982, but the Paramount DVD is at least in 2:35 widescreen! This Friday film even got a two star review from Leonard Maltin! Now go to the videostore and see this classic Friday for yourself!
Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981)
This is the cult classic that introduced Jason Voorhees to millions of American film audiences.
One of the creepiest entries in the Friday series! In many ways, Friday The 13th Part II is better than the original. It features a more pluckier heroine in Amy Steel, a nasty and scary atmosphere courtesy of Steve Miner, who would also direct Part III and of course this is the cult classic that introduced Jason Voorhees to millions of American film audiences. This takes place five years after the original at a training center down the road from Camp Crystal Lake. This was the start of a trait that would bog down the later sequels, that is the same old routine of teenagers splitting up when it should be obvious that some thing or someone is outside lurking about. However, the many positives, including a scary killer and Amy Steel tend to outweigh the negatives. C'mon Jason, on to Part III and beyond!
The Bad News Bears Go to Japan (1978)
Paramount, how could you release this movie upon the movie viewing public?
After repeated viewings i have some comments..Paramount, how could you release this movie upon the movie viewing public? The story is weak, Tony Curtis should have never been brought on board, nobody when i was a kid watching in the theatre could have cared less about his involvement or the endless scenery he chewed and what is worse is that the Bears are nowhere to be seen for over half the movie! And speaking of the Bears, a good chunk of the team is missing!! However, the most glaring omission of them all...where is Chris Barnes AKA Tanner Boyle? Outside of Jackie Earle Haley, you could have dumped anybody else from the team and nobody would have cared, but Tanner was the heart of the team in the original and the sequel. This movie singlehandly killed the Bears franchise.
The Bad News Bears in Breaking Training (1977)
However, the real star of the show is Chris Barnes as Tanner Boyle
Call me crazy, but this is my favorite movie of the Bad News Bears movie series! The story of the Bears travelling from California to Texas for a game at the Astrodome san parental supervision might be far fetched for some to swallow, but overall the charasmatic leads of Jackie Earle Haley and William Devane make it all work. However, the real star of the show is Chris Barnes as Tanner Boyle, whatever happened to you Chris i do not know, but your portrayal of Tanner has always had me and my friends rolling on the living room floor for decades! Great to see on DVD, too bad Paramount couldn't even see fit to include even a lousy trailer! oh well, it is good to have the Bears back!
Screwballs (1983)
The story deals with five horny guys at T&A High....
Oh my god! Screwballs should be at the top of everyone's list for a comedy on bad movie night! The story deals with five horny guys at T&A High(get it?)who try in the vain to attract the attention of the only virgin left in school-Miss Purity Bush! This flick turned the world on to the phenomenon known as strip bowling-which results in the most eye opening scene since the end of Sleepaway Camp and makes good use of spanish fly and magnetism. Acting honors go to Purity's mom,dad and the fat guy in the meatlocker. All in all a classic not for the whole family.
Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn (1983)
Some hokey effects,None existent plot and bad acting..
Oh brother!Another winner from Charles Band and company! This flick(usually found in the 99 cent section of your local video store) deals with a ranger patrolling planets who befriends a young girl and fights with Richard Moll,A guy who shoots green stuff from his hands and the evil Jaryd Syn!Some hokey effects, none existent plot and bad acting with some corny 3-d make this a z-grade film fans delight! To be watched with a six pack and a love for formage...
My Bloody Valentine (1981)
A very underrated Canadian slasher flick!
A very underrated Canadian slasher flick! My Bloody Valentine deals with a disaster in a mine shaft in 1960 and the one surviving miner who comes back to town to get revenge a year later. The time is now the 1980's and the killing is starting up again! There is more twists and turns in the plot than you can shake a stick at!The Cape Breton scenery is also a nice touch and the night time atmosphere can be downright spooky! A shockfest worth your attention.
Hot Potato (1976)
The follow up to Black Belt Jones!
The follow up to Black Belt Jones! starring the great Jim Kelly!!!This 70's flick has it all! Kung-fu!Comedy!The zamboni driver from Rocky! nice scenery and of course Jim Kelly! The plot deals with a team sent to Europe by the U.S Government to rescue a Senator's daughter. A must for all fans of Jim Kelly and B-grade action flicks.
