Manos: The Hands of Fate (1966)
WANTED: Plot, Script, Actors, Sound.
I thought a friend of mine was exaggerating when he told me this was the worst movie ever made. Well, he was wrong. This movie is so bad it's not even in the running. This is The Anti-Movie. What's wrong with it you ask? The sound for one. I've never heard a little girl with such a deep voice. The monster (Torgo) looked like he had pillows for knees. The Master's robe looked like Paul Bunyan had fingerpainted on it. And the director must have forgotten to pay the electric bill. I could go on, but I've got to clean my ears. The only highlight, the haunting Torgo theme music.
Mystery Science Theater 3000 (1988)
Rates as one of the funniest shows ever
I have only known about MST3K for a couple of years, but it rates as one of the funniest programs I have ever seen. If you have never heard of it before, MST3K is a hokey show where this guy, Mike, is stuck in space with a few robot friends and is tortured by a woman who wants to take over the world. The really weird part is that she tries to torture him by making him watch really, REALLY bad movies as a way to test if this form of torture will work on the rest of the world. Well, Mike and his friends repeatedly thwart her plans by making jokes about the movie while it's playing. What makes it so funny are the jokes that they tell. These jokes range from the extremely subtle to downright crude, and no matter how many times I watch an episode, I almost always discover a new joke that I didn't understand before. I remember one subtlety that I didn't notice until I was taking quantum mechanics in graduate school. Who would have thought you'd ever need to know who Richard Feynman was to get a joke?! This show is currently on the Sci-Fi channel on Saturdays, and I HIGHLY recommend that you watch it. Even my straight-faced father got a kick out of it. (Believe me, if you knew you him, you'd realize that it has to be funny to get a laugh out of him).
The Giant Spider Invasion (1975)
One of the best bad movies ever made.
The first time I saw this movie was on an episode of MST3K. From the greasy hick to the doctor from Nassau (NASA) this film has it all (wrong, that is)! I couldn't stop laughing when they finally showed the 'giant spider' that looked like a high school homecoming float. I would recommend this movie to anyone with a lot of time and patience. I only wish they used microphones. It sounded like Thomas Edison was the sound man through part of it. Try and see the MST3K take on this movie. you will die laughing!
