Cruel Intentions (1999)
One Good Turn Deserves Another
I can describe this movie in two words; EXTREMELY GOOD! Are you tired of those cat and mouse movies where the plots are usually botched up by either bad actors or poor directing? Well fear no more. This movie delivers with a punch. No bad acting, directing or weak storylines found here. Ryan Phillippe and Sarah Michelle Gellar once again dazzle fans with their tremendous performances. With Reese Witherspoon rounding out the cast you've got yourself a winning team. Watching this film really opened my eyes up to the way people treat each other. The mind games, secrets and lies usually end up destroying people's lives and even their reputations. You know the old saying " What goes around comes around? " Well this movie proves it to be true. I'm not going to ruin the plot but I'll tell you this; for all those that think you're invincible and nothing in the world can break you down think again. I give this movie ****, two thumbs up and whatever else the critics give. Recommend this hit to your friends.
Other movies of interest: WILD THINGS Note: These two movies go hand-in-hand. A must have for movie collectors.
Deep Blue Sea (1999)
Move over Jaws
Renny Harlin does a great job bringing terror back to the sea. It's been a long time since sea-goers had to worry about if they'll end up as shark food. Not since Jaws has there been a mammal movie that took the nation by storm ( Anaconda being the exception because the snake is considered to be a reptile). The special effects team did a great job bringing you into the deep aquatic ocean (check out the shark attack scenes). The cast was great! L.L. Cool J must have a no kill clause in his contract when it comes to horror films because he makes the most daring escapes I've ever seen before. Good writing, directing, acting and special effects all rolled into one film. It may not be better than Jaws but it is equally competitive. You may have to look past the story line to really get into the film ( I did ). Just one thing, NO SEQUEL!!!
Major League: Back to the Minors (1998)
Not the majors
This film did nothing to help carry on the success that Major League's I & II started. As a matter of fact they didn't mention the Cleveland Indians once during the whole film. What happened to the "Comeback Kids"? Did they finally win the World Series or did they just give up? I understand that the story was about a minor league team but come on. What was their motive for winning? I hope it wasn't to see if they could beat the Minnesota Twins ( the way those guys are playing now anybody can beat them ). After they finished their season in first place did they go on to the championship or did they just go to Disneyland like everyone else? The only highlights of the film was seeing Pedro Cerano and Tanaka return to baseball ( although it was a bit cheesy learning how they quit the majors only to return to the minor league later on ). Bob Uecker was great as always (did he get fired as the Indians head announcer?). I hope that if a fourth one is on the horizon that it is not a repeat of this awful season.
Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998)
20 years and still running strong.
20 years ago Michael Myers set history. Not only did he escape from a mental institution but he managed to elude the police until his unfortunate accident in the hospital (for those who didn't know, Mr. Myers along with Dr. Loomis was severely burned at the end of Halloween II.) Now exactly 20 years later he's back to finish what he started, to kill his sister Laurie Strode. Steve Miner does a great job keeping the Halloween atmosphere alive in H20. Unlike other sequels the story has remained the same. Michael is more of a human being and Laurie isn't the helpless victim any more. The ending is a bit disappointing but overall H20 could almost be compared to what I think is the greatest horror movie of all time the original Halloween.
Halloween (1978)
"THE BEST ORIGINAL AROUND"
John Carpenter's Halloween is the best horror film I've ever seen. Never before has there been a movie to keep the storyline of their characters the same throughout the entire series ( Halloween 3 being the exception). Despite having a budget of a little over $300,000 this movie is worth watching over and over again. You can never get enough of Mr. Carpenter's opening theme music to this 1978 classic. For those who thought Scream would be the greatest horror film of all time think again. Wes Craven couldn't even begin to touch this movie. For those who followed the sequels ( even when they were not too hot ) you relize that this movie never lets up. Even after 20 years you still get that scary feeling you did when you first saw it. To top it all off the final sequel to the series ( Halloween H20 ) won't disappoint you. Here you have the main two characters from the original battling it out for what you hope is the final time. Until the horror industry can clean up its act and make decent sequels to their films make mine "Halloween."
