We Were Soldiers (2002)
Good movie if taken at face value.
As a Canadian who has had many friends fight and some die in Vietnam, I am told that this movie was somewhat representative of what went on in Vietnam in the early months of fighting. This illustrates the American surprise at the caliber of fighting forces that the North Vietnamese possessed and it sent a message to the North Vietnamese that the Americans possessed some mechanical advantages they had not yet encountered when having to contend with helicopters and planes. The movie was not perfect and does not rate as high as Private Ryan, Black Hawk Down or even We Were Soldiers, but the message is sent clearly to the viewer and the graphic nature of hostilities is displayed throughout the battle. It is entertaining and worth the price of admission.
Band of Brothers (2001)
A film of documentary proportions
This is an excellent adaptation of the invasion of Europe by Allied forces. The absence of any big name actors forces the focus onto the plot development. The characters portrayed are likeable and believable as one feels that similar personalities and reactions would exist during wartime. The only regret is that it appears only on cable and its impact today, particularly after September 11, would provide a message needed by all North Americans that right will prevail. This is not simply a war movie. It is the 1940s version of Survival!
Le violon rouge (1998)
A Pleasant Surprise
Very well orchestrated story and well acted throughout. A sleeper movie that should be on everyone's list. One of the best movies I have ever seen that fades back and forth through centuries of time.
Point Blank (1998)
A Bruce Willis rip-off!
This movie would only appeal to someone who likes counting dead bodies. Poorly acted and with an extremely unlikely plot. A Bruce Willis Die Hard clone that does not work with Mickey Rourke!
Lost Valley (1998)
Not worth even renting!
This movie should have been done for T.V. The acting and character development was weak and the plot very thin. A much made over plot about mothers and daughters finding themselves with a title that has nothing to do with the content of the movie. A waste of a video rental.
Six Days Seven Nights (1998)
Good concept-poorly cast, thin plot
The concept of having two people marooned in a modern day 'Gilligan's Island' was appealing. Harrison Ford is still my favorite actor despite making this movie. However, Anne Heche was poorly cast as his island mate. This is not a gay bashing comment as that issue does not matter to me. She is just not a good actor and looks even worse when paired with the powerhouse Ford. Also thought that the plot could have been a little more exciting rather than focusing on their relationship. Many of my colleagues pick this a the worst of the year.
A Civil Action (1998)
Good film but needed a little more action
This was a good film from the legal documentary side but left my group a little empty. We all felt that there was some event going to happen in addition to the trials. Well acted and good story line although many in our group wished to see Travolta benefitting from his actions. Would still recommend it to anyone.
