Il ciclone (1996)
This one goes right to my all time favourites list
When I saw this movie I wasn't prepared for such a treat. I thought it was kind of O.K, but I truly enjoyed it! The characters are charming and funny. The feel of the movie is that of "real life". Plus you get a glimpse of the breathtaking Italian countryside.
Cruel Intentions (1999)
Well...
I don't know what's scarier. This movie being so lame or the fact that so many people actually liked it. Well... Maybe I had Dangerous Liaisons in mind; now, that's a movie! Or maybe my expectations were so high that the utterly unrealistic plot couldn't live up to them. However, Reese Witherspoon and S.M. Gellar had a moment or two where they show some decent acting. Specially the final scenes.
A Civil Action (1998)
Not the best of the year, but it delivers.
I didn't have high expectations about this one, but I was glad to watch a well acted movie. Yes it gets a little slow at times, but everyone's performances were brilliant, even from those who play minor characters. I'm not usually crazy about John Travolta but I liked him in this one. Robert Duvall and Kathleen Quinlan were pretty good too. So try not to keep your standards so high and you'll find this movie enjoyable.
Total Eclipse (1995)
Good heavens! What did I just see?
A monumental piece of crap.Yes, my curiosity for Leo made me rent this one. Next time I'll have someone to remind me how curiosity killed the cat. Bad acting from Di Caprio and Thewlis; boring pointless plot. Leonardo was way over the top, in his effort to portray Arthur Rimbaud as obnoxious yet brilliant, he fails miserably (we're just left with the obnoxious and annoying part of the character). And what about those accents!! And the final part!!! No one in their right mind would ever take these guys for "Les Poètes Maudits". Nothing memorable to see here. Go rent Seven Years in Tibet, where David Thewlis performance is much better.
The Saint (1997)
The one thing I got from watching this movie is...
That Elisabeth Shue is a hell of an actress! How can anyone
pretend to fall in love with Val Kilmer while he's wearing such
a hideous wig and speaking in that ridiculous voice. Well, she
did (and managed to keep a straight face while doing it) And
that's who is supposed to be "the master of disguise"? As for
the script, it wasn't that terrible, but it wasn't any good
either.
Ever After (1998)
What a pleasant surprise!
Honestly, I thought it was impossible to make a Cinderella film
and make it mildly interesting, since this is a story that
"everybody" knows. When I first knew there was going to be a new
version of the celebrated fairy tale, all I could think was: "As
if we needed another one", but the trailers at the theatre
really caught my attention. So, when I finally saw the film I
wasn't prepared for such a delightful experience. The dialogue is
witty, the characters are complex and well written, and I think
Drew Barrymore did a splendid job as Danielle. The supporting
characters, like Jacqueline, Paulette or King Francis really
worked for the storyline. Great movie! Bring your friends, bring
your kids or bring your grandmother.
