American Outlaws (2001)
One of th Best of Summer 2001!
I enjoyed this film more than I thought I would. I am not a huge western fan, but this movie was the best western I've seen in a while.
The ensemble cast was great! They worked well together especially the "gang" of outlaws. One of the reasons for wanting to see this movie was Colin Farrell. He is quickly becoming one of my favorite actors even though he is a relative newcomer.
The story was pretty tight although I am not up enough on western history to know how close it was to "true" history. There was never really a slow moment in the movie. Each character had his/her own storyline which was played out nicely for an ensemble cast.
Go see this movie! You won't be disappointed.
Evolution (2001)
Not A Bad Flick -- Ghostbusters for the Millennium
I had a chance to see Evolution last night at a preview screening. Overall, the movie was enjoyable. It was a good comedy. Not, bust a gut funny, but funny. The story was cookie-cutter. Citizen discovers aliens, government takes over, aliens turn bad, citizens try and save the world.
My biggest problem was with the characters. Duchovny, Jones, and Moore all played scientists and they were either clumsy, dim-witted, or anything but smart acting, most of the time. Jones did show that besides being funny he can be serious. Sean Scott I fear is geting typecast as a the dropout goofball, but he's still funny and one of my favorite young actors.
It's worth the time ( and $$) in the theater.
Gone in Sixty Seconds (2000)
Great Action, Poor Use of Ms. Jolie
Ok, I'll preface my comments by saying I am a HUGE fan of Jerry Bruckheimer. That being said, I was a little disappointed by this movie. Jerry held true to his genre and created some great action, especially with the car chase. The movie was also visually stunning if you were into cars.
The story was ok. I have not seen the original, so I don't know how "true" to the story this version kept. Cage went back to the Stanley Goodspeed (The Rock) type of character which I really liked. Duvall was great as the mentor to Cage and the rest of the group. The ultimate disappointment was the lack of depth Jolie's character had in this movie. Her talent was flat out wasted! She was strictly in this movie for the female "perspective" and to draw her fans (like me!).
Overall, it wasn't Bruckhiemer's best. He has done better and will do better (Pearl Harbor). Pure action. Pure entertainment. Go see it!
Gladiator (2000)
Go See This Movie! Thumbs Are Way Up!
The first blockbuster of the summer will most likely be the best (not highest grossing, just best in overall quality). I have been anticipating this movie since last fall when I found out about it. Ridley Scott brings back this era/genre with a great story, score, actors, and scenery. Russell Crowe has shown he can be an A-list actor. I wasn't sure what to expect, I just knew it would be a great movie. And it was! The only thing I was unhappy about was some of the camera angles used during the fight scenes. They seemed choppy. Scott did a great job of dealing with Oliver Reed's death before the film was finished. You can not tell what is dubbed or another actor. Go see this film! The bar is set high for all other "summer" movies.
Armageddon (1998)
WOW!!!
Ok, so there are some improbable things that happen (space station docking the way it was shown), the movie overall was AWESOME!! I am a huge scifi fan and I loved this movie. The excitement begins with Heston's dialogue and doesn't end until the credits. The plot was believable and the characters were good. Buscemi was hilarious.
I felt more of the human element in this movie that in that "other 1998 asteroid movie". The action was intense. If you are a fan of the space program like me, you'll love the scenes at Kennedy, but be able to pick out the errors (i.e., both x-71's taking off near each other). Bruckheimer continues to show us why he is the action Master. I will watch this movie over and over again.
