Lady in the Water: A Wonderful Escapist Fantasy Film
18 November 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I just saw "Lady in the Water", and I was quite surprised by this film. When watching the previews for this, I thought it would be another B grade horror film. However, I was extremely surprised and pleased with what I saw.

The basic plot is that there is this superintendent of an apartment complex in Philadelphia, named Cleveland, who is doing his maintenance job duties in the apartment complex: killing bugs, plumbing, cleaning the pool, emptying the garbage, etc.

We get a snapshot of the various tenants in this apartment building, including a new tenant whom Cleveland is showing around.

A tenant is complaining about the scummy pool, and the reason why is a bit of a mystery. He finds someone, a woman, swimming in the pool. He goes in after her, and hits his head and falls into the swimming pool. When he wakes, he finds that she has brought him back to his apartment and that is where the adventure begins.

Cleveland tries to do the right thing, feeling it inappropriate to have a scantily clad young lady in his apartment, and he tries to take her out at dawn to give her coffee and get rid of her. However, some sort of wolf like monster comes after them, and they run screaming back to his apartment.

As the film progresses, we find out, from the Korean university student and her grandmother's and mother's bedtime story, that this person from the water is a Narf, and the monster after her is a Scrunt. She wants to return to the oceans, but this monster is preventing her from doing so.

A host of human helpers are recruited from the apartment to assist her harrowing escape.

I won't say how or whom or why, but suffice it to say, this film is very creative, with twists and turns and edge of the seat suspense, humor, and nice special effects. I like the cinematography a lot, and the musical score is also quite lovely and appropriate.

I was pleasantly surprised with Lady in the Water. If you want a wholesome fantasy adventure with some tongue in cheek humor, this one is for you.

A Truly Epic Mini-series!
9 July 2001
I remember when this aired in 1982. It was a breath taking and epic mini-series. I am extremely interested in getting a copy, but haven't been able to find a seller in 2 years of searching for it on the internet, auction sites, etc.

A quick observation....
2 December 2000
I saw Gladiator in the theater, and loved it. I commented on it on IMDB back in May, 2000. I just purchased a copy on DVD, and noticed that in the beginning, in the moments just before the battle against the German barbarians, that the battle cry the Germans are heard to make, is from the movie Zulu! It is repeated at least one more time during the battle. I'm not complaining, but just thought I'd bring this up(as I just watched the movie Zulu yesterday, also on DVD).

Happy hunting!

History isn't so boring after all, now is it?
5 May 2000
I thoroughly enjoyed this film! This film was filled with pleasant surprises: from the grand cinematography, action, gore, special effects, to the plot itself, and the great support cast, including Derek Jacobi and Richard Harris. As a historian, there were a few minor things I could quibble about, such as some of the armour used was clearly from a later period, such as that used in the Crusades, and even spied a Viking Helmet from the era of Canute. That and the prescence of a Sinaloan Milksnake(indigenous to the western hemisphere), crawling in bed with someone.....a presumed victim of a harmless snake...The only other criticism was that to make the evil Commodus even more despicable, they had to throw in an implied incest scene to villify him more. But still, Commodus was never as vile and clearly insane as Gaius Caligula.

I also liked it when the emperor was telling stories about Claudius...who was played so effectively in the series "I Claudius" by Derek Jacobi....who did a nice job playing a senator in this film.

Otherwise, I thought it was a fantastic film, and I plan to go back and see it again!

One of the worst movies I have ever seen....
5 November 1999
"The Mummy", has to be one of the worst films ever made! It was so terrible, that even the special effects couldn't boost the rating of 1 that I gave it! Actually, it deserves a 0...even the most rudimentary of research about ancient egypt says that this movie got it all wrong. Sure, its fiction, but so was "raiders of the lost ark", and at least they did some homework. This movie was cheezy, cliche', and predictible, dull, and boring.

"I have a cunning plan..."
22 April 1999
I was surprised and very pleased to see this initial series of "the Black Adder". I love the way that Rowan Atkinson uses history, twists it for fun, and makes wonderful satire out of it! Atkinson draws very accurately from Shakespeare and English history of the War of the Roses era, and makes it hilarious! Not for everyone, but it is definitely for me! I also loved the use of Brian Blessed, who played Henry V's uncle in the Branaugh adaptation of Henry V...fantastic! Brilliant!
