Sharpe: Sharpe's Mission (1996)
Another good outing
Sharpe's Mission bucks the trend of the later Sharpe episodes in still being a good story with plenty of action. Once again Sean Bean excels in the lead role, ably supported by an impressive cast.
The story, as mentioned, is good; exposing the corrupt nature of some elements engaged in France, as well as hinting at the first signs of weakness in Sharpe's marriage. The episode moves along at a brisk pace, and yet still has time for some nice touches of humour with Harris' dealing of the slimy Shellington.
Overall a good episode which whilst not achieving the highs of the first few outings, still an improvement over some of the later showings.
Sharpe: Sharpe's Justice (1997)
Not the same in England.
With the Peninsular campaign over, our hero Richard Sharpe has to return to England. However, his next assignment sees him working for a wealthy mill-owner against his former friends in Yorkshire. There is a contrived plot about the burning of mills, as well as the usual family revelations; but this is a disappointing outing. Sharpe simply is not the same without two factors being present - the Chosen Men and the French. The same problem was evident in Sharpe's Regiment. If you are a Sharpe fan, of course you will like it. If not, then best stick to those outings that actually involve battle scenes.
Sharpe: Sharpe's Enemy (1994)
Another classy performance
Oncer again, Sharpe's Enemy allows our hero Richard Sharpe, along with his Rifles in support, to save the day.
A somewhat contrived plot does not help, but some excellent acting saves the day. Not, one might add, from a certain Liz Hurley! The tragic events towards the end add a poignancy to the Sharpe series that had not really been present before, although this is superbly counter-balanced by the humour of Sharpe's promotion.
Not the best episode, but definitely up there as a strong showing, before the ravages of Jane beguiled our hero.
Sharpe: Sharpe's Eagle (1993)
An accomplished second outing
In his second outing Sharpe is promoted captain, but can he keep this new rank? With a solid storyline about an incompetent regiment, bigoted colonel, and the quest for the titular Eagle, Sharpe excels in everything that makes this series - namely playing it fast and loose with rules, regulations and, it has to be said, women. Even the romantic interest retains the plausibility of the first episode, before the advent of the disastrous Jane.
An excellent performance by Sean Bean, ably supported by the Rifles, in particular Daragh O'Malley and Assumpta Serna, this is definitely a must see for any Sharpe fan, or indeed anybody interested in the Napoleonic Wars.
By Dawn's Early Light (1990)
Not bad for the end of the world!
A TV movie about the end of the world did not inspire confidence, but I was pleasantly surprised by this film. Taking the accidental triggering of a nuclear war as its cue, the film deftly deals with a number of sub-plots, including one bomber crew as well as the political attempts to end the nuclear exchange. Superior acting lends the film a weight that is often missing, although I must confess to thinking of Dr Strangelove more than once! Give the film a chance if you can, and I think you will be presently surprised.
