El mariachi (1992)
Get real! Even for $7000!
I know it's his first film, and I know he only spent $7000. But still... How can Ebert say this is a good movie? It's pathetic, for a commercial product. Maybe for a family movie fest, featuring all the relatives. But the actors, other than the Mariachi, the joint girlfriend, and the real hit man, are so stiff and artificial that it was a pain to watach them. This "Moco" guy is such a bad actor that I can't believe the director couldn't liven him up any. There are a couple of cute scenes, but by and large this is not worth watching. I just had to in view of all the fuss everyone made. Don't bother.
Tous les matins du monde (1991)
Boring!
I'm sorry- to those who evidently love this film, and to myself for wasting 2 hours waiting for something interesting to happen. I read all the reviews before renting this, as I have been burned so many times by lousy movies. In the aggregate, despite comments about its slowness and somberness, it sounded worthy. Depardieu at his finest??? 90% of his role is a boring voice-over. I love music, but listening to the rather monotonous viol playing became tedious. It's shameless to compare this favorably to Amadeus, where the musical variety was spellbinding. 90% of the visual here was closeups of the players' pained faces, faking playing the instruments-- that's great cinematography? Please. And I can deal with slow movies that are interesting; this one made me want to hang myself along with the pitiful moribund daughter. This was a bummer, and I can't fathom why I've heard so much good about it. Perhaps it's the new clothes of the Versailles court, and just like the Emperor's, they ain't nothin' there!
