Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)
Eye Candy!
This movie is nothing more than a bunch of eye candy! No wonder the original writer wanted his name removed from credit. There's no writing to speak of. At the risk of being hated by a bunch of people who saw this when it first came out and are therefore still awed by it, I honestly see no reason why this movie has been given all the credit it has. It has awesome special effects I'll give it that, but beyond that, this movie is terrible. What story line exists is boring and elementary.
Was I the only one who felt Richard Dreyfuss doesn't beat his kids enough? I'm kidding of course, but seriously I hated them. And his wife? What a raving psycho!
I'll just close now before I anger too many people. But please before you say what a wonderful movie this is, please take into consideration something more than just the pretty pictures.
Gorugo 13: Queen Bee (1998)
Terrific Follow Up to the Professional!
Golgo 13: The Professional was one of my favorite anime movies, so naturally when I saw Queen Bee, I had to check it out. This movie more than lives up to its predecessor. The plot is twice as complex and it's characters twice as interesting. What's better is that all the characters are realistic. There are no immortal psychos like Snake, or Silver and Gold. This movie could just as easily been made with live action. But while watching this movie you'll forget that it wasn't. If you liked the Professional, check this one out!
Four Rooms (1995)
A Tip for Watching Four Rooms
If you have just rented Four Rooms, I would like to give you a piece of advice before you play it. Fast forward it to about 45 minutes into the movie and watch from there. You won't miss a single important thing and you'll thank me later. Unfortunately I was never given that guidance when I first rented this movie. The only reason I sat through the first two stories was my complete lack of anything better to do... that and I knew Quentin wouldn't let me down. The first two stories are unbearable, but after you've sat through them you're well rewarded by the hilarious second half of the movie. Also I've got to say the soundtrack is awesome. It fits perfectly with the mood of the movie. And finally a note about Tim Roth. His performance was spectacular! I never knew the guy could be so hilarious! For anyone who says he was ripping off any other actors, it's called a role. He played a role and did a damn good job at it too! He, by far, carried this movie through its horrid first two acts. If it wasn't for him there's no way I could have physically survived the first 45 minutes.
Gorugo 13 (1983)
This movie would give Hanna Barbara a heart attack!
This was one of the first anime movies I had ever seen. It is still also one of the best. There are aspects of other anime movies that bug me, but Golgo 13: The Professional doesn't have any of those problems. This movie is non stop action. The characters are very real and very complex. The plot is very well written and the ending will completely surprise you. This movie makes you completely forget you're watching a cartoon. One complaint: The music sounded like something out of Scooby Doo.
