Ba mùa (1999)
This film goes nowhere but does it beautifully.
If you're looking for answers, this film mostly poses questions. This film introduces and then traces the steps of five central characters, A cylco driver, a prostitute, an American GI, a young girl and a little boy. The lives of these five are intertwined as they try to find happiness or just get by. You should prepare yourself for some soul searching questions about the great continuum of life and your place in it. This movie is a little self indulgent at times and can be a little predictable, but first time writer/director Tony Bui has incredible promise. I look forward to his next film.
Train de vie (1998)
Can Jew's running from Nazi's be funny?
Answer: Yes. This film continued to surprise me with the way it handled this concept. Some may find the idea too hard to handle but it treats the heroes with enough respect that no offense should be taken. Watch out for the "Kick in the gut" ending.
Cookie's Fortune (1999)
One of Robert Altman's tightest films.
The story is threaded together with masterful precision, Altman extracts excellent performances from the entire cast with the exception of Lyle Lovett who is just plain goofy. Charles Dutton turns in the performance of a lifetime. And the on screen chemistry between Dutton and Patricia Neal is spell binding. Ending the film seemed too difficult for Altman and so it runs past a few places where it could have stopped, but what do I know.
