This movie disgusts me almost as much as that "Third Watch" television show. Beckett's family and all that "I'm so proud of you" bs and his lady friend with AIDS, "I don't consider myself any different than anyone else with this disease" because she got it from a blood transfusion. All that courtroom crap was baloney. I couldn't stand it. I almost admired the few who had the balls to say they didn't like homosexuality, et al. They seemed like the only real people.

I give this a 4 because I liked the performances of Washington, Hanks. Banderas was cool too

I remember seeing this at the theatre. I couldn't wait for it, I knew it'd be a good movie, as Han Solo was the star! and I wasn't disappointed.

My favorite scenes were the one mentioned in the original comment for this movie, where Indy watches this sabre-wielding badman show off for 2 minutes then takes his gun and shoots him, as if swatting a fly. Also the snakepit. Was cool to know Indy had a vulnerability, he was afraid of snakes, and here were ten of every kind.

At Universal Studios I was told that if you look close enough at the cobra you can see Harrison Ford's reflection on the glass that separates him from the snake. But every time I get to that scene I'm so into the movie I forget about it. Love this movie, a 10

Kubrick: The man wasn't 100% all there!
27 March 2000
Had no clue going in what this movie was about really. I didn't know if it was okay that I was laughing at some of the scenes. All the men sitting around the table trying to figure out how to stop this plane from dropping a bomb, was like a bunch of kids in detention, Breakfast Club-like. Sellers's Strangelove undoes in two minutes of talking what the whole rest of the gang is trying to do for the first 90 minutes of this movie, and actually gets the other men smiling, hey BOMBS AWAY!

WarGames (1983)

Would you like to play a game?
11 October 1999
How about 6 steps to Kevin Bacon. My mother was an extra in The Jesse Owens Story, he was a Columbus man so some shooting was done here. Barry Corbin was in that and WarGames. I went with Ally Sheedy to St. Elmo's Fire which starred Demi Moore who was in A Few Good Men with.. Kevin Bacon.

I love WarGames, I watched it earlier this year after wondering why the big premium channels, as many as there are, didn't play it. Then it was on like twice a day for a month! I was surprised when i saw that it was made in 1983, when I had first seen it. Been a long time. It's still a killer movie, would be a big money-maker even if it were just made today, maybe.

I just couldn't get past the terrible acting by this Tobey Maguire. He looked like someone just saying their lines. I probably could have done better. The rest of the acting was good and I liked the premise but it seemed this movie didn't have an ending to me. Nothing was really resolved. Really liked Witherspoon (go watch Freeway) Daniels, Walsh and Allen. Don Knotts was cool too. I'll watch this again, maybe concentrate a bit more, but for now - 5 out of 10

I thought this would be a cool movie about dinosaurs living in the present day. A family type picture. I wasn't expecting a dinosaurs are the bad guys, "oh no they're going to kill us" type thing. Then when it turned into that kind of movie I just kind of had to root for the dinosaurs. Well no, didn't want the kids to die, but then the ending irked me too. It was like, "Oh no they're after us..." and then everything was okay. The end.

Still I gotsta say, cool effects. 6 out of 10

Citizen Kane (1941)
7/10
maybe had I seen it in 1941..
7 September 1999
Citizen Kane ------------ This was #1 on AFI's Top 100, and it was one of only two in their top 10 I hadn't seen. (Still haven't seen Gone With the Wind.) So I rented this one. I guess the big deal wasn't so much the story, which was a good one, but all the camera angles and lighting or whatever that Orson Welles. Well, I don't care about any of that. I just want a good story and good acting. There was plenty of that here. I knew Rosebud was the mystery going in so I kept my eyes open. I kept my eyes open and figured it out. Lucky guess, or it may have been because I'd seen it in crossword puzzles and never knew what it meant.. You know where the clue is: Like Rosebud, and the answer is 5 letters: asled.

Pretty good movie, not worthy of #1 if you ask me. I give it a solid 7

I don't get it.
6 September 1999
I'll never understand why Humphrey Bogart was/is so popular. The only movie I can say I liked of his was The Desperate Hours, but that's not because he was in it. That was just a good movie. Casablanca didn't do anything for me. I found it hard to sit through. Something wrong with me I guess, I've watched it more than a couple of times to try to figure out its popularity.

I can only give it a 5.

Okay movie
1 September 1999
I admit i just watched this for Bridgette Wilson. I wasn't expecting much. What I got was a very predictable story - Girl chosen to be surrogate mother wants the baby for herself - with kind of a twist in the end. It seems the father had previously killed her parents in a car accident. Actually was a pretty good story to think all the planning that went into this beforehand. And Wilson did some good acting, some cheesy scenes, and there weren't any of those unnecessary 7 minute sex scenes. Pretty good movie,

Good watch.
30 August 1999
We had to watch this movie in Drama class my freshman year of high school. Problem was that I had Drama 1st period. I slept a lot 1st period (and sometimes 2nd). So a 3 hour movie that the teacher taped (with commercials) was turned in to a two week affair, or so it seemed. I got another shot to watch it late one night, 4 am or so, on Bravo. Problem was, unbeknownst to me, it was a two night deal. So I only took in the first half of it. Finally got the shot to see the whole thing on AMC this afternoon. Millie Perkins was just wonderful as Anne Frank, and a great cast all around. I knew Shelley Winters had won an Oscar but not what for. Sometimes a good story is so much better because it's a true story, like Apollo 13, and this is no exception. It's hard to imagine these things actually happened.

Go watch this sometime when you have 3 hours free.

Edie & Pen (1996)

Cool movie.
23 August 1999
I watched this late one night when nothing was on. I chose it for Jennifer Tilly. She's cool. I like Scott Glenn too. Ever since Silverado I've liked him. And he was excellent in The Silence of the Lambs. This is a good story about two women who quickly became friends. Shared stories and secrets about men (read Helen's review for more info).

I was glad I watched it. Hadn't seen Stockard Channing much lately. She was in The First Wive's Club just for a bit. I should have seen the ending coming where Edie's new boyfriend is Pen's old... oh nevermind, go watch it.

Psycho (1998)
Not bad at all.
21 August 1999
Good job Gus Van Sant. I liked everything about this except Anne Heche. I'll never understand why she was put into this part.

I love this idea of making not a remake of a great film but a recreation. Almost scene for scene and word for word the same movie, only updated. ($400,000 instead of $40,000 and the like) Even the license plate numbers on both of Marion's cars were the same!

I liked Viggo Mortenson (A Perfect Murder), William H Macy, Philip Baker Hall (he is cool, check out Hard Eight aka Sydney) Vince Vaughn had his moments. Some parts he was better than Perkins was in the original. He seemed more.. what's the word.. effeminate? But kind of like I said in my comments for the original Psycho, It was hard to believe that Vince Vaughn's Norman didn't actually commit the murder. In 1960 I take it a lot of people didn't know. If this '98 version was the only version I'm sure that would not have been the case.

One other thing to watch for... Either Anne Heche has a trouble with her math or someone was playing a game with her/us. Check out her in her motel room subtracting from $400,000.

Good movie, a Hitchcock fan should give it a view. I give it a 7 out of 10. Even with Anne Heche.

I really liked this movie. Once the action started the movie went non-stop. I was on the edge of my seat a number of times. Especially when Paul, I think it was Paul, got swept away with the bridge and also when they were in the boat that started to dissolve right out from under them. Pierce Brosnan was very good, I liked the guy who played Paul, I think it was Paul, and the children were good too. But I really liked Linda Hamilton in this. It's hard to watch a movie with her without thinking "Terminator", but I had no problem separating her from that role to this one

i give this a 7/10

Psycho (1960)

Wish I could've seen this in '60
21 August 1999
I hate that I knew about the shower scene before I ever saw the movie. I hate that I went in thinking it's a movie about Anthony Perkins/Norman Bates instead of Janet Leigh/Marion Crane. But even knowing what I did when I first saw it didn't take away too much from this masterpiece.

Norman Bates, ever the victim, cleaning up after his mother's misdeeds. What great acting by Perkins. His delivery of such lines as "We all go a little mad sometimes... Haven't you?" with the chuckle in the middle. The look on his face when that car wasn't going to sink all the way. The way Arbogast had him flustered and his mother almost came out, "I'm not a fool and I'm not capable of being fooled... Maybe she fooled me but she didn't fool my mother!" What a great line that was anyway.

Someone suggested that Vince Vaughan did a better job in the '98 version of Psycho. Oh no. No no no no no. In the original you really believe Norman Bates is an innocent victim. You're really kind of hoping he'll pull it off. No way he could've killed the girl. Vince Vaughan himself looks like a murderer.

This movie gets a big fat 10 from me.

Too many silly scenes.
21 August 1999
Great premise. I had been wanting to see this for a while, since Throw Momma From the Train came out. I rented it last week. Hitchcock is all over the place this month, his 100th birthday and all.

Good acting, especially from Robert Walker. But COME ON PEOPLE.

A few notes:

It's suggested that Guy cancel the upcoming tennis tournament. But no, he's urged on to play. "You don't want to do anything suspicious!" Hello!? His wife was just murdered! Living with another woman immediately after her murder though, that's not suspicious.

Guy's being tailed by a pair of cops. When did this become standard practice? And where in the hell were they when Bruno came along? Bruno and Guy attend the same party, Bruno damn near strangles (strangles, gee, wasn't someone strangled earlier in this picture?) Mrs. Cunningham to death and nobody gives a damn!?

Guy is playing his tennis match and Barbara goes to get a cab to wait for him. Guy finishes his match and runs to the cab! He looks in the window to the cabbie and says, "Are you waiting for me?" "yes" comes the reply. Now okay, he's a somewhat famous tennis player and MAYBE he got recognized right there but I don't think so. That was just stupid, I laughed and laughed after that scene.

Bruno's reaching for the lighter through the drain, full stretch. His fingers can touch it.. he's got it.. NO! it falls a foot further down. But somehow he reaches it! Wow! his arm got 13 inches longer, just in time too!

The guy running the Merry Go-Round gets shot and killed probably, the Merry Go-Round goes out of control but the number one priority after the ride is stopped isn't the old man who was shot, not the people who most definitely were injured, it was the two men fighting over a lighter. One of them may be a murderer you know.

I can't give this movie anything higher than a 5. It was a good story, a movie with a few extra perks for those who are paying extra attention. But no suspense held me, there was just too much stupid stuff going on.

Good acting, tired story.
21 August 1999
Great acting by Bogart, Astor and Lorre. I'm not usually a big fan of Bogart, I really don't understand his popularity. I liked The Desperate Hours, but not because he was in it. Casablanca I didn't care for at all. Mary Astor I've liked every time I've seen. I don't know that I've ever seen Lorre before (Umm, note to those reading - I had heard of Peter Lorre), if I did I didn't notice him.

But watching a story about a Private Investigator I pretty much expected everyone to be phony. Nothing really surprised me. Just like hundreds of books I've read.

I did like the quick pace and once again the strong acting. Good job John Huston.

Who'd've thought?
19 August 1999
I don't recall my jaw dropping like it did during the conclusion of this movie since... Dirty Mary Crazy Larry.

For the first 100 minutes Haley Joel Osment carried this movie and Bruce Willis was just along for the ride. But still I was thinking, "I'm really disappointed. How can this thing have the 8.9 rating on IMDb?" Then I saw the last 6 minutes...

I gotsta give this movie a 9

Love Erika
19 August 1999
My favorite Erika Eleniak movie. Better than Chasers and Under Siege. McNamara is much better in this than he was in Chasers, where he played a Tom Cruise wannabe. In this these to are a couple, who've just met, on the lam. End up getting in big trouble but in the end everything is okay. Simple story but I just love Erika to death.

Stephen King ain't just a horror novelist
19 August 1999
From the same book that brought us Stand By Me and Apt Pupil comes The Shawshank Redemption. If you haven't read this book (Different Seasons), you'd better go buy it. And if you haven't seen Apt Pupil (very underrated movie) go rent it.

A couple things about this movie. Morgan Freeman is one of the best out there. When I read the novella, 'Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption' I had never thought that Red was a black man. Maybe he wasn't which just goes to show what a great story and movie this was. IT DIDN'T and IT DOESN'T MATTER that he's black or not. The other thing was that I kind of wish I HADN'T read the story first. Knowing how it was going to end spoiled it a little, not too much because the girl I saw it with was 100% totally surprised when the hole in the wall was discovered. So at least I had that prior knowledge over her. haha!

Even though I gave this movie a 10 out of 10 here at IMDb, I'm surprised it's doing battle with The Godfather and Schindler's List for the #1 position here.

Better than the first? I dunno
19 August 1999
I loved Marlon Brando but Al Pacino stepped into the role pretty good. The De Niro flashbacks, it's all good. I don't know which movie is better.

I loved when AFI's top 100 was on and one producer was saying how much he cursed Francis Ford Coppola because he had trouble listing his top 5 all-time films and dammit Coppola, you gave me 2 of them!

I finally saw the whole thing! Great movie!
19 August 1999
It took me a while to get this movie watched from beginning to end, as it seems I would always catch it a half hour or so in. I'd never want to watch a movie that's supposed to be as great as this after missing the first ½ hour. Then there were the times I'd catch it on HBO, TMC or Showtime late at night and fall asleep (admit it, it does get off to a slow star). Finally i stole my brother's set of all three Godfather movies and watched front to back.

Damn good cast. I liked Marlon Brando a lot and Al Pacino is already one of my favorite actors ('Scarface' I still like better than Godfather). Then you got your James Caan and Robert Duvall was at his best.

Cool story about family and gangster life, loved the horse's head.

Warning: Spoilers
I'm sure all the prison situations in this show, cliche or not, are all exaggerated, but of course it's TV and there needs to be drama. And there is quite a bit in this show. I love it.

My favorite storyline is the alcoholic lawyer (Tobias? I dunno the names too well), he's the wimpiest guy in there at the beginning. He get's tattooed by the baldheaded Nazi queer (Vernon?) and turned into his bitch. and then he gets all kinds of revenge, beats the crap out of him and then craps on him. Then he bites some other guys penis off. Then Vernon gets revenge back, getting the guys wife killed and turning him gay. It goes on, I can't wait for the new season. I think the wheelchair guy is going to be gone, he was cool, but I'll watch anyway.

I lost 7 minutes.
28 July 1999
Except for the fact that I lost about 7 minutes in this 'real time' movie, I thought it very entertaining. I had set my watch with all the clocks in the movie and there was a seven minute difference at the end. Oh well, Johnny Depp and Christopher Walken are great in this movie and the premise is very original: "Kill this lady or we kill your daughter." The lady in question he finds out after the fact is the governor of California. So basically he's being framed, a cam-corder watching his every move. It's a no-win situation, unless...

Captivating and at times, boring.
28 July 1999
Only watched it the once, if i see it again maybe I'll understand more as to why this was 3 hours plus. See things I missed. There were times when I wondered, "What the hell is this scene doing here?"

But for the most part I had eyes wide, it was just a beautiful movie. The black and white was a wonderful idea. Great cinematography. Ralph Fiennes, Ben Kingsley and Liam Neeson (Whom I am not a big fan, hated him in The Phantom Menace, Ethan Frome and Nell) Great music by John Williams and Steven Spielberg keeps getting better and better, as if it were thought possible.
