Arlington Road (1999)
Strong story with minor annoyances
One of the best (and thought-provoking) thriller plots in recent memory, but some of the camera angles and lighting were distracting and at times downright annoying. It seemed like every 10 minute segment had Jeff Bridges having a police spotlight intensity light shined in his face while he stood in a dark room. Perhaps that's why his acting fell flat at times; some of his facial expressions detracted from the seriousness of his scenes. Tim Robbins and Joan Cusack played their parts well (when does Joan Cusack not turn in a stand-up performance?). Hope Davis was just this side of annoying as the grad student girlfriend. Be warned, this is not your typical thriller-type film, but if you go in with an open mind, there is something for you to take out of it.
Elizabeth (1998)
Oscars should go all around
"Elizabeth" is a fantastic film. Historically accurate, no, but a fantastic piece of filmmaking nonetheless. Cate Blanchett is amazing as Elizabeth Tudor, as is Geoffrey Rush as Walsingham. Several scenes sent chills down my spine, especially when Elizabeth is told that she is Queen, and when Mary of Guise sends a message back to Elizabeth from a Scottish battlefield. One of the few films I've seen that deserves their awards nominations. If it's playing in your area, do yourself a favor and see it.
The Other Sister (1999)
Major "aww" factor but still worth it
You'll hear a collective "aww" more than a few times in the theatre, but still very entertaining and very worth the price of admission.
Como agua para chocolate (1992)
Worth renting
"Like Water for Chocolate" more than earned its favorable reviews. Lumi Cavazos did a stand out job as Tita, among other notable performances. Ignore the people who say it's a terrible film. You'll find far more people who speak highly of it than those who disparage it.
