De-Lovely (2004)
De-readful
Buy the soundtrack. I was in PAIN throughout this movie for its portrayal of Porter's life. The music is wonderful, but if Cole and Linda Porter's lives were that bad, they would have both checked out much earlier, and not made us suffer through this movie. All the pain of their lives, without any joy. Agree with an earlier comment that Kline's makeup made him look like Carl Reiner. I think Reiner should sue. I blame the writer and the director here. I thought the actors did well, and I thought the singing was very well done. And for the criticisms of the performance of "Begin the Beguine"...have you ever seen a performance of "Jubilee"? I have. There is a reason this particular Cole Porter musical is NOT revived.
Gangs of New York (2002)
Liam Neeson was lucky. He got out of this in the beginning!
Whew! Had to scroll down all the other comments to make sure I wasn't the only person who hated this movie. Overlong, not very historically accurate, and boring. Several times I expected the strains of West Side Story to soar into the movie: 1. DiCaprio leading the troops out of the caves to take on the other side (The Jets are gonna have their way, TONIIIIIIIGHT) and 2. Diaz coming upon the two bodies after the fight--I expected Chino to come out of the shadows with the gun). The acting was quite good, especially Daniel Day-Lewis. DiCaprio wasn't too bad, but when, oh when, are they going to stop trying to make him fake [off and on] and Irish accent. Gratuitously bloody.
The only person in this movie with any luck was Liam Neeson. He got to die in the beginning. The rest of us had to sit through this disaster.
Walking to the Waterline (1998)
One of the truest movies I've ever seen!
I don't know what critics have said about this movie, but as someone who grew up as a summer resident of the "Jersey Shore", there is no other movie that captures the actual feelings, interactions and mood of the area than this. Matt Mulhern slammed a home run for reality here. The neighbors on both sides of the house, and the LACK of development of their character [from a "critical" standpoint] is the brilliance of this movie. That's how much you got to know your neighbors at the shore, no matter how long you lived next to them. Alan Ruck is an outstanding actor, and has an excellent Philly accent for a Chicago native. Congratulations, Matt. It is one I shall always remember, and recommend to all my shore buddies.
