Amongst Friends (1993)
goodfellas 90210....
the only redeeming portion of this film is mira sorvino.... rob weiss is self indulgent and the cast is nothing but a bunch of not so pretty, pretty boys waving their yahoo's around.... it shoulda been called goodfellas 90210.... too bad the scorsese reference makes it sound better than it is.... avoid this film.
American Movie (1999)
for anyone who's ever wanted to be a filmaker....or just wanted to be in a film....
i remember reading a blurb for this film about a year ago and wondering what to expect. After a friend of mine went to a screening and came back raving, i was really curious....however, i didn't get a chance to check it out until last night.... this was a pretty darn amazing film about REAL people, doing REAL things and no punches are pulled.... i had no preconceived notions and no real expectations....this is a film for anyone who has ever wanted to make movies.... it proves you don't have to be a hollywood type to win in the end....and don't forget to visit www.americanmovie.com....
Once a Thief (1996)
okay, it's not macbeth....but it's john woo darnit....!
alright.... i'd have to say this isn't the worst in the john woo catalog.... i found myself laughing and getting that rush you only get in one of his movies.... i thought the characters were enjoyable and after reading the john heard book, 'ten thousand bullets: the cinematic journey of john woo', i had new respect for the man....no, the legend.... i would only recommend this movie, however, if you're a true woo-phile.... it has all the earmarks of a good woo flick, just like balckjack and even hard boiled.... you just need to understand the man loves to make movies.... he doesn't care if they're TV movies or theatrical releases or straight to video....he just loves his art.... i have one problem with this flick and one large focus of praise.... now, not seeing the original....(john woo says it's not something he was ever happy with....) i'm not sure if my thoughts are whole, but here goes.... the bad thing....not enough of the double gun action.... the good thing....was a scene where the two good guys, the one bad guy and the girl are all in a mexican standoff and the girl, (who all three guys are in love with....) steps in the middle and they all carefully lay their guns down just long enough to get her to safety and then all heck breaks loose.... that was a cinematic masterpiece....! over all i'd give it a good rating....not to shabby for TV....
Città violenta (1970)
charlie b is the man for me!
in this brillant piece of cinema, charles bronson plays a sniper who is double crossed by his girl while on vacation....they almost kill him but after a bloody shoot out and a fairly lame car chase, he gets away....only to be offered a job to kill someone....he turns it down and ends up killing the guy who tried to kill him instead...he then proceeds to be hunted by the guys who tried to hire him, this group of men happens to be lead by none other than telly savalis....!....plot twists and a surprise ending make this one of the more interesting bronson films....with the film not being made in the usa you get a different sense of charlie....check out the jail scene and see if you catch the fact that he has a lisp....that explains all the long shots....oh yeah, jill ireland plays his girl....big surprise. don't get me wrong i love charles bronosn....but her, not so much. the end.
Telefon (1977)
Charles Bronson as a Russian KGB agent....?
as a recent fan of charlie bronson, i'd have to say this was a little bit of a stretch for me....personally i think charlie is the all american man, not to handsome, not ugly, soft spoken and kind of funny lookin'....he reacts wrongly to most situations but i'll be darned if i don't love him anyway.
in this installment in the bronson legacy he plays a kgb agent trying to stop the world from being blown up by super socially inept bad guy, donald plesance. charlie has no accent and never attempts one. tyne daley is unecessary. lee remmick is also a non-romantic, romantic lead....i think that if you want charlie at his peak, rent 'the stone killers'. this is pure testosterone for any red blooded american....no love interest. just midgets, wacka-chick 70's music, the black panthers, an ashram, and charlie bronson kickin' butt nine ways to sunday
Naked in New York (1993)
simple.
a simple love story about two people trying to make sense of life while trying to make sense of each other.... artistic, well written, and a cast of thousands....! it changed my life....it may just change yours.
