Minority Report (2002)
Everybody runs.. to see this movie!
OK, so it has some minor plot holes and a slightly mushy ending, but that doesn't detract from this being a very entertaining movie.
It has everything: Action, suspense, drama, comedy (some very amusing scenes), and oh yeah.. it's sci-fi, but that seems incidental...
In one scene, you might notice a reference to Lucas' Attack Of The Clones, too.
Has a slight futuristic feel of Blade Runner whilst not invading entirely on that movies territory.
Well done Spielberg and co.
Blacktop (2000)
Meat Loaf's vehicle
Pun intended ;-)
Meat Loaf shines as a psychopathic relationship counsellor in this slightly-above-average thriller.
The point isnt the storyline or the flawed plot (goodness knows there's a number of holes). It is delivering a suspenseful thriller, and T J Scott delivers.
A more climactic ending would have made this film more enjoyable.
*spoiler ahead* eg (although it's been done before) have Jack escape from the rig before it went over for a shot at Dave, face-to-face.
Urban Legends: Final Cut (2000)
Er.. bad legends
Forget the fact that this is a sequel.. the only similarity is the fact that people are supposed to die in urban legend fashion, but few do in this movie anyway (settings, maybe.. fashion, no), which is what made Urban Legend so much better than this one.
It has some redeeming features.. one being an amusing scramble for a real gun amongst prop guns, and the killer being wheeled away in a wheelchair by the killer from Urban Legend.
Panic Room (2002)
Brilliant
David Fincher's use of lighting, camera angles and movement was excellent, and didn't detract from the overall feel of the movie.
Forest Whitaker turns in a great performance as the guy who never wanted trouble from the beginning, and Jodie Foster is excellent as a woman who uses her intelligence under pressure. This is no female Bruce Willis, (mild spoiler) as we discover in the dying moments when she becomes totally helpless.
Nearly every scene is filled with suspense and almost doesnt let up until the end. Fincher proves once again you can take a light script and turn it into an excellent thriller.
9 out of 10.
(Mild spoilers follow)
For those who thought the criminals were too dumb, it was even spelled out right from the start. You want a movie about hyper-intelligent gangsters? See Ocean's Eleven. So what if the bad guy who went down the stairs got back up again? You dont know how much damage he sustained. Remember, this is the same guy who had his hand squished so much he probably should have been unconscious for the rest of the movie. First you dont want predictability and now you do?
Very Bad Things (1998)
Not a comedy
Some amusing moments, but not a comedy. Definitely dark, and has a good storyline, but some scenes are completely overdone (and overlong as a result).
See the movie only if you can stand some gruesome moments and enjoy a trip into the dark mind of Peter Berg..
Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995)
Die Hardest
Beats the Die Harder hands down, and comes close to the original.
John McTiernan seems to bring out the best in the trilogy, and this movie is no exception. Always an edge-of-your-seat and nail biting drama that never lets up, unbelievable stunts and plenty of good one-liners for comic relief.
Good entertainment all round.
Fatal Instinct (1993)
Subtle humor hits the mark
Excellent send-up of detective/thriller movies. All the characters play the "straight" role well, and they need to, because it's "deep thinking" humor, but also very funny. Armand Assante surprisingly comes over well in a comic role, as does Sherilyn Fenn. Well-connected storyline which is unusual for a movie that parodies many others. Very good entertainment.
Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (1992)
Not up to standard
I am a huge David Lynch fan, however this movie ended up being a huge disappointment. There were so many character changes (meaning they behaved differently) from the series as to be totally confusing, and the story did not connect well (most likely to due the inordinate number of deleted scenes).
We are given a good insight into what Laura was like before she died, but with an unsatisfying ending, and it seemed it was perhaps one of a few endings shot, in which they picked one of the worst.
There are several excellent scenes though, including the one where agents Desmond and Stanley confront the woman at the diner. Brilliant. Unfortunately, there's too few of them.
I can only assume that its the result of a troubled production, which it seems to be.
Apollo 13 (1995)
Brilliant docu-drama
Note my one-line summary. This is a docu-drama, ie a fictionalized (slightly) account based on true events. If you want a documentary, watch the old video footage. This is a movie, and a technically brilliant one.
I'm a complete cynic when it comes to realism in space and science fiction movies, but this movie had me believing Tom Hanks, Bill Paxton and Kevin Bacon were in space.
Kudos to the producers. By sticking close to a true story, they have a believable script. To entertain the audience, they used excellent actors and added some drama to the mix. The effects cap it off nicely.
Muppets from Space (1999)
Excellent start to ample entertainment
After the opening sequence, I thought this movie was going to top A Muppet Christmas Carol. It had plenty of entertaining moments, however don't expect the same level of pure belly laughs after the opening. Some great parodies on sci-fi movies including a great send up of Independence Day.
Good entertainment and wonderful for kids.
The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992)
Classic muppets
For me, this is the movie which all muppet movies will be measured upon.
Filled with charm, excellent songs that fit so well and plenty of humour in the right places.
Consistently entertaining and simply a joy to watch!
