La haine (1995)
A definite sign of growth for French cinema.
Gritty. A film that attempts to be truthful, and more so, tries to really say something about issues many are afraid to confront. The acting is believable-considering nearly everyone casted in a non-actor (they're just playing themselves), this makes sense. The references to American culture, particularly, Hollywood cinema, puts an interesting slant in the movie-who knew that French kids could break-dance that well! Worth seeing a few times-for the insight into alternative youth French culture and for the acting realism.
Chacun cherche son chat (1996)
Easy to watch--entertaining, with a quirky twist.
The lead female in While the Cat's Away is subtly elegant, often, the character's journey takes on an existentialist form. The photography of the city's more "local" side is entertaining and makes the viewer feel very comfortable with the surroundings. Recommended for a laid back evening with your favorite lady.
True Crime (1999)
Would have been an excellent 'made for T.V.' movie.
Overall nothing really new here. Eastwood may have been better off quitting while he was ahead. The script was a little egocentric, and tended to draw excessive attention to his archetypal promiscuity-almost like Seinfeld (notice how all of his girlfriends were gorgeous). For the most part it was entertaining, and the death row situation was engaging at times, but as already mentioned, a little "bread and butter" Hollywood.
Rushmore (1998)
Off-beat and extremely original script, Bill Murray's performance is unbelievable.
The script and plot are as engaging as they are twisted. Murray is the best as I have ever seen him-it's a perfect role for him. The seventies psychedelic soundtrack is fresh. The character of Max is one of the most complex roles and is capable of carrying the film alone.
