Depressing story - one spoiler
7 January 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Many people have written here and expressed their opinion about this story very well. I haven't read the book in many years but I found the SyFy production to be terrible. Namely, earth people turn into sheep at the first sign of the invaders and buy the heaven on earth sales pitch hook, line and sinker. Except for New Athens, it was dispiriting that no one fought back or tried to preserve their cultures. Perhaps the novel featured this theme of wimpy earthers but I found it depressing and ludicrous. Heck, if some creature had popped out of a spacecraft looking like Old Scratch, I would have quickly left town. All in all, a forgettable production.

It's a B movie, get over it!
24 October 2012
For all of the critics who rated the film less than 5 stars, well... It is a campy example of 50's B movie making. It isn't supposed to be anything more than that! To its credit, the film has some atmospheric moments. The sets are pretty good and the acting is better than bad. Mona (Allison Hayes) steals the show with her good looks and crazy persona. There are not a lot of production flubs given the low budget. This film compares favorably with other B efforts of the 50's. Check out Allison in the 50 foot woman flick. This was her most famous science fiction role. My advice: watch 'Zombies' it and enjoy it for what it is...!

Clever animated movie
27 October 2000
MMP is a clever and entertaining movie featuring stop-action puppet characters. It is humorous, maybe a little lightweight on the plot, and it is fun to hear the voices of Karloff, Diller, etc. attached to their characters. Older children would enjoy it and adults will find some of the inside jokes and references to 1960's American culture to be insightful and funny. Worth seeing once for it's quality animation and silliness.

Dadetown (1995)
An absorbing and clever film
24 May 1999
Warning: Spoilers
This film tells the story of a small town that experiences the simultaneous decline of its principal industrial employer, a metal fabricating plant, and the rise of a high tech computer imaging company. The tensions created among the town populace and employees of the two companies make for a fascinating social and psychological account. It is, at times, a funny film and an emotional film.

The BIG surprise for the viewer comes at the film's end as the credits begin to roll. What had appeared to be a bona fide documentary film turns out to be, well, a documentary film with credited actors! It caught this reviewer by total surprise as all of the interviews and the production style had 100 per cent documentary all over them.

Director Russ Hexter has written and directed a minor film masterpiece. The fictional town of Dadetown is the back drop for telling the now all too common story of the decline of Rust Belt industries and the rise of silicon-based technology. It is an engrossing story and it is well presented and well told.

The Car (1977)
Demonic Gas Guzzler Goes on Rampage
19 April 1999
This movie is interesting and somewhat suspenseful. The characters behave like we'd expect them to in these types of situations. The movie is a low budget effort as evidenced by the curious location changes. Early in the film the action takes place in or near Santa Ynez, CA which is north of Santa Barbara. By the end of the film, the same townspeople confront the car in a desert setting that looks more like Arizona than anywhere else.

Witch Hunt (1994 TV Movie)
Genuine horror missing from this effort
5 April 1999
Viewer beware of Witch Hunt. This movie begins as an oddball story about Hollywood types practising magic as a hobby in the mid-50's. Then the Eric Bogosian character shows up and we have, ta-da, an allegory of the 1950's hunt for Communist Party members in Tinseltown! Under the name of Sen. Larson Crockett, he convenes the House Unnatural Activities Committee and proceeds to root out magicians who have infiltrated Hollywood. (Query: Exactly how does a US Senator end up chairing a House Subcommittee hearing?) This sorry story line dominates the whole movie leaving little time (or reason) for genuine horror. I was thoroughly annoyed with this subterfuge because it is a political drama, not a horror story. As I said, viewer beware.

Human drama in the war torn Balkans
5 April 1999
A historical background in the centuries-old conflicts of the Balkan region will help the viewer fully appreciate this film. Simply put, the movie tells the story of a Macedonian man who, while practising photo-journalism for an British photo service, decides that his duty to his homeland and family may well outweigh all other considerations in his life, including career and romance. The story is told using an ingenious cyclical storyline which represents the never ending conflicts of the Macedonian/Albanian region. It is important for the viewer to know that the fundamental historical conflict that is unexplained in the movie (leaving the viewer guessing as to the reason for the warring factions) is between Serbian Christians and Macedonian/Albanian Muslims. After seeing this film, I asked the same question I did after seeing Welcome To Sarajevo, namely, why are these people fighting? This distinction is NOT drawn in the film and the viewer is on his own but it is, nevertheless, an excellent film because of its sheer drama.
