Hardware (1990)
Hardware. Sex, drugs and lethal injections...and some great music.
9 April 1999
Hardware, I have been surprised to discover, is considered by some as the worst movie ever!...I don't think that it deserves this ignoble title. It is hardly a "must see" movie but for the hard-core Science Fiction fan it is well worth it.

It has some GREAT cinematography and at times resembles a rock-video clip in its style. (Featuring Iggy Pop as the voice of the pessimistic Disc-jockey 'Angry Bob'. And the lead singer of Motor-Head makes a brief cameo). Which is not unusual considering it's their music in the film as well as P.I.L.

Its conception of the future is as well realized as other Sci-Fi films that received more favourable critical acclaim. With some subtle touches that others lack. For example, a packet of "Good Vibes" marajuana cigarettes smoked by the sculptor heroine while at work.

There are some great characters. The singing voyeur adds a touch of comic menace. The afore-mentioned Motor-Head chap, who as a Water-cabbie shuts off the voice of Iggy Pop (Angry Bob) and puts on one of his own tapes saying, "These guys are great". And for the "just say no to drugs" crowd, the acid-head friend-of-hero who finds it difficult to save the heroine due to being OUT of his head.

The plot is more believable than some of the other rubbish Hollywood executives, as opposed to writers, would have us swallow. But it still stretches the credibility gap of all but the most zealous conspiracy theorists.

There is more to add about this movie but that is difficult without giving it away. It is what I cannot say that distinguishes this movie for me and makes it so memorable. It is WELL worth watching.

And the heroine is really sexy. Shower scene...nuff said.

The Mission (1986)
Political vs Spiritual...Art in Celluloid.
9 April 1999
This film is the finest expressions of the neglect or opposition of the spiritual in favour of political expediency I have ever seen.

The other comments for this film eloquently, or at least enthusiastically, extoll it's virtues and I can only rephrase what they have said...

Suffice to say that the Mission remains one of my favourite films. I saw it many years ago and my only regret is that I did not see it in the cinema. Regardless, the impression it made upon me has been indelible. As an artist, I only hope that I can create something that touches or moves my audience in such a way.

A wonderful film that, ever so briefly, absolves Hollywood of its sins.
