Alexander (2004)
Let me add to the disgust
This film qualifies as a Category 3 Disaster: I want my money back, I want my time back, and I want my memory of this film completely erased from my brain.
Everything mentioned as of yet is true. I too, fell asleep during the battle scene for crying out loud, and couldn't for the life of me empathize with any of the characters. The accents didn't make sense, the conquests were not given any directive or purpose, the dialogue was melodramatic and overly Shakespearian, the story was told like a high school lecture that we all would've doodled sketches through, if we were lucky enough to be outside of a dark movie theater with better lighting.
There has been some controversy over the gay/bi-sexual claims, but even if we admit that it was all ambiguous, the movie is so bad, those questions will presumably drift off into oblivion, when nobody bothers to pay their hard-earned cash to sit through it. Yes, the impression is that Alexander was more interested in men than women (for whatever reason), and yes, that might be the only interesting thing in the movie, but save your time and money and read about Alexander in the Encyclopedia.
Oliver Stone is one of the Top 5 filmmakers of all time, but this junk..errr...I mean 'film' is going to make me rethink that claim.
Shallow Hal (2001)
Pretty good film, but not very funny...(It was touching)
It wasn't a comedy, like I thought it would be. Not nearly as humourous as There's Something About Marry or Dumb or Dumber, but it actually made me teary-eyed during a few moments. The message of the film is a good one, and it doesn't really discriminate against fat people. It discriminates EVERYONE for being shallow! Go see it at the dollar theatre...it's not worth $8...but it's still a charming little film.
Magnolia (1999)
Leapin' Lizards!!!!
Good cast...no...GREAT CAST! There isn't much of story, but the way that P.T. Anderson intertwined the subplots derserves to be recognized. Tom Cruise was funny during his motavational speeches and Jason Robards was tragic as the dying father. I can't remember the girl's name who play the crack addict, but she was beautiful :) Good casting indeed :) The ending was odd, but should make sense after the film is over with. Not the best picture of the year by any means, but it is definately "different" from most of the films made today. It was worth the money just to watch the techniques used with the camera. I'd give it 9/10
Weapons of Mass Distraction (1997)
Not "The Player", but still entertaining
I rented this film because Ben Kinsley is was of my favorite actors of the present time. I thought the acting was funny and smart, the dialogue delicious, and the humour extremely dark. It's not the best film or television movie ever made, but it was entertaining and kept my interest. I wouldn't recommend this film to everyone, but it was one of the brightest and most refreashing films I've seen from HBO.
All That Jazz (1979)
Artistic Entertainment
The first time I saw this film, the opening sequence amazed me, and to this day, it still does. The movie plays with your moods and emotions and THAT'S a sign of 'good movie'. The acting was good, but Schieder was simply brilliant! I've only seen him in the Jaws films, French Connection and Marathon Man, so my opinion on his range may be in question, but I was truly impressed with his acting. The editing and techniques were inspiring and mesmerizing to watch...you won't be disappointed as far as that goes. The only aspect that may turn viewers away would be the theme. It deals with drugs, sex, and rock and roll (or should I say "Broadway" style rock?) I personally enjoyed the original use of visuals and sound effects. It reminded me a lot of Pulp Fiction and Boogie Nights in that respect. It made great use of both the surreal world and the real world, and that was well done. Check it out...it's worth 2 hrs of your time.
The Haunting (1999)
Effects Bog the Chills
This comment comes from a guy that wasn't too impressed with the original telling of the story back in 1963 (Robert Wise). I thought the casting was fine, the house was more beautiful that scary, and the special effects made the film seem more beautiful than anything else. There were probably one or two time when I felt "spooked", but other than that, I almost fell asleep. Then again, it takes a lot to frighten me :). Then again...my date thought it was pretty lame as well. You decide.
Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)
Phantom Lives Up to Expectations
When a friend of mine got tickets to the most recent Star Wars adventure, I wasn't THAT excited. I'm not a huge fan of the series, but don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the first three, it's just that I wasn't planning on waiting 5 weeks for a ticket, ya know? What awaited me in the theatre was one of the most breathtaking films I had seen in years. The special effects may look 'too' animated during the previews, but once you're in the theatre, it looks more realistic than the originals. Some of the dialogue was stupid, and that's about the only negative criticism I can think of. I wonder if the dialogue and the voice were meant to be so "corny"? I found myself laughing at characters left and right, and I'm not sure if I was supposed to. Never-the-less, Phantom Menace is a great film and I highly recommend it.
My Dinner with Andre (1981)
Interestingly Satisfactory
When I rented this film, I knew I'd be in for an endurance test. Two men sitting at a table discussing life and other topics sounds a little too boring, even for my tastes. This film was surprisingly entertaining no matter how deep and philosophical it may seem. It's not for all tastes, and it will either be loved or hated, but you will definitely walk away with a new outlook on life. Once you start watching this film, you will either turn it off within ten minutes, or want to view it repeatedly to see what you missed. Overall it deserves an 8.5
