X-Men: Evolution (2000–2003)
A WONDERFUL travesty.
27 January 2001
I've been an X-Men fan since childhood. Perhaps it will explain the depth of my interest to say that Nightcrawler was my first crush. I always was a little upset because the cartoon didn't follow the stories properly, because people saw it and that that those were the only stories there were. I have mixed feelings about the movie. When I heard of a new cartoon, in which they were teenagers attending a NORMAL HIGH SCHOOL, I freaked. Then I watched it. So help me, I LIKED it. Every adaptation of the X-Men has gotten the ages and times wrong. This one didn't pretend to be getting it right. You know, right off the bat, that this is not how the stories go. The characters' attitudes, however, are very true to the stories, (from what I've seen, anyway) Moreso than any other adaptation and perhaps even more so than some more recent comic books (the industry is GREATLY in decline. I can't bear to read them anymore) It is, in fact, a marvel"Muppet babies". and I think that's better than simply acting like its the real stories and STILL getting them wrong. I get to see my favorites in an alternate way! Kurt and kitty are regulars, instead of kurt's 2 guest appearances(with no sense of humor) on the older cartoon and kitty's trip through a wall in the movie. There's avalanche, for pete's sake. You'd have to actually read the comics to think of including avalanche. So it's a travesty. Adaptaions are travesties 90% of the time. This one's fun! And besides, Kurt looks ADORABLE.

Now I know why it's a classic.

Normally, i throw a fit if a film is not historically accurate. I also don't like movies that drag on for long periods without dialogue. I've got a feeling that this is a major exaggeration of the accomplishments of TE lawrence. For once, I don't care. There are many sections which consist of lovely scenery and pretty music with no spoken words. For once, I don't care. This was an incredibly well-done movie. The writing, acting, and directing were all good, and as for Omar Sharif....i don't think I've ever seen a man look so sexy with so much clothing on. The growth of the relationship between Lawrence and Ali was excellent.

The Haunting (1999)
3/10
Not a COMPLETE waste of time.
24 July 1999
It was creepy until the special effects became so outrageous that it was laughable. I applaud the animators, but i shall have no nightmares about this film. Plot holes abound, and the death near the end was unnecessary except for gore value, it wasn't about them, it was about her. Tweak with this screenplay a bit and you could have a worthy film. But why bother? just watch the old one.

boring, but good for little children I guess

A typical slapstick comedy, but lacking creativity, so mostly not funny. It's short and simple, good for the kiddies, but I don't recommend it for anyone else. I found it interesting that women were stereotyped as airheaded and men as evil or spineless.

Gattaca (1997)
Thought-provoking. 1 or 2 dull parts
12 June 1999
I enjoyed gattaca. I'm about to watch the tape for the third time. There were one or two somewhat dull parts, though, parts that were perfectly well written, but for some reason didn't come off right on screen. Most of these parts involved Irene (Uma Thurman) I'm a high-schooler and I've been involved in several classroom debates about genetic engineering. I didn't see a real probl with it at first, but then I began to consider what very well COULD happen when (not if) this technology develops further.. Gattaca really made me think about this as well. The best part of the whole movie, however, was Eugene/The real Jerome. The character is the most complex and interesting in the whole film, as well as being the one i most identify with. Jude Law's performance was superb. When I watch it this third time, it'll be just for him.

The Scarlet Pimpernel (1999–2000)

No thank you.

I have read each and every one of Baroness Orczy's Scarlet Pimpernel books. Counting this one, I have seen 3 pimpernel movies. The one with Jane Seymour and Anthony Andrews i preferred greatly to this. It goes out of its way for violence and action, occasionally completely violating the spirit of the book. I don't expect movies to stick directly to plots, i gave up being that idealistic long ago, but if an excellent movie of a book has already been made, don't remake it with a tv movie that includes excellent actors and nice costumes, but a barely decent script. Sticking with the 80's version....Rahne

Not superb film, but I liked it a lot.

I saw Phantom Menace a quarter after midnight may 19(or, technically, May 20), and i considered it worth staying up until 3 am on a school night. Do I think its a masterpiece of screenwriting? No. I believe the film WAS overhyped. I also believe there's such a thing as too much special effects. But I liked it a lot. And personally, as far as my liking the character goes, young ObiWon Kenobi beats Ep. 4's luke skywalker HANDS DOWN. (Ewan MacGregor's voice may have something to do with that...my ears are directly connected to my teenage-girl hormones) There should have been more of him and less of jar jar in my humble opinion. Looking forward to Episode 2....Rahne

An excellent production.

I thoroughly enjoyed "Duchess", and in fact all of the Horatio Hornblower movies. They were well written, well filmed, and well acted, particularly in the cases of Ioan Gruffud and Jamie Barber (Horatio & Archie Kennedy) who also, I happen to think, are both very attractive. I like the fact that M'Man Kennedy was brought back into the story. Cherie L. was also very good as the "Duchess."

The Scarlet Pimpernel (1999–2000)

A bit disappointing.
28 April 1999
As someone who has read all of Baroness Orczy's books and seen most of the movies based on them, I must say that the 1980's version, with Anthony Andrews and Jane Seymour, was better than this. It was better written and stuck more to the spirit of the story than this one, which seemed to go out of its way to involve people getting shot. This new adaptation is less light-hearted, yet does not have as much depth, either. Although there is some good acting, the actors did not have much to work with. Nice costumes, though.
