The Gift (2000)
CHEESY ENDING.......GREAT PERFORMANCES
31 January 2001
Once I began to watch the film and Keanu Reeves gave me chills, I knew I would be in for a treat. This super natural thriller, THRILLED. It wasn't a horror film, that would be to say the least. I thought it was a provactive thriller that boasted some of the best ensemble performances this year. Most notably, Keanu Reeves and Giovanni Ribisi. The two of them kept me on the edge of my seat and gave me the chills, with their blunt performances. Blanchett did great as well. Katie Holmes must be trying to shed her good girl image...it worked!

Overall this was a pretty good film, I just thought the ending was kind of cheesy and didn't pay off the mature suspense level that the picture maintains. But hey, I guess it had to end some kind of way.

This film will be snubbed during awards season but if not, honor Ribisi for his edginess and Reeves for his most mature performance ever. Nothing against The Matrix, but he rose to the occasion in this film.

SPECTACULAR!!!!!!!!!
31 January 2001
I'd heard all the buzz. Saw the great effects in the trailor. Watch all the awards pour in. But nothing prepared me for the great film I went to see.

The subtitles seemed daunting at first but sooner than later I was so into the film that I forgot I was reading the dialogue. The movie takes an age old theme, LOVE, and one of the greatest action movie genres, MARTIAL ARTS, and combines the 2 so creatively, it all seems like something new...because it is.

The fighting scenes come at the best times, establishing a realationship with the audience that pulls them in and keeps them in. The choreography is flawless and the cinematography is breathless.

I'm not too familar with the performers, except for Chow Yun-Fat, but they were terrific.

I thought the last scene was so toching and angelic that resignated inside of me for some time after the fact.

GREAT FILM....The Best Film Of The Year.

I was truly impressed with the story and the special effects...It's more than a martial arts movie......infact, it never was!!!

Varsity Blues (1999)
Not Bad At All
7 January 2001
I'd heard about Varsity Blues through friends and ads on television. It seemed to be just another teen MTV movie that would lack any real enjoyment. I was wrong. Though it had it's cliches: The slow mo' touchdown winning scene in the end, a not-so-happy home life for the lead, etc. But it was enjoying to watch. I completely fell into the story and wanted to know what was in store next.

I thought Voight was terrific as the arrogant, red neck coach. I truly hated him. I thought Van Der Beek did well as the football star with heart...though the southern accent was a little over the top. I also felt the city's love for their high school football team was on a level that really was very unrealistic. Especially the scene where Van Der Beek's girlfriend announces on the PA that he is there then everyone rushes over to him as if he's an NFL super star...just a little too over the top.

Overall, I did enjoy this movie for what it was. It had it's many cliches but some how it seems to play over them with added heart.

Good Sunday afternoon movie.

Traffic (2000)
So gritty, so good, so sophisticated, I got lost in the stories
6 January 2001
I'd been anticipating this movie for sometime now. The trailer is juicy, the ensemble is flawless, and the director is the hottest calaborator around now. I was not disappointed.

Traffic was so engrossing that I wish I could hit pause and rewind just to make sure I got the point of that particular scene. There was so much going on and so much to choose from, that I found myself still thinking about a previous scene while 2 more had passed already.

I've never scene a film this clean about such a gritty content matter. I definitely need a second veiwing just to get the jist of some major plot points again...So good that I could barely keep up. There is such a high level of sophistication that I almost wuestion the theory that maybe I'm not ready for a film of this magnitude. Nevertheless, I know it will garner tons of Oscar nominations and may take the millenium's Best Picture award.

Douglas was brilliant, Del Toro was surprisingly engrossing, and Zeta-Jones gave a devilishly desperate performance that stayed with me through out the whole film. Cheadle, a favorite of mines, did great as well. And look out for Erika Christensen who stole scenes phenomenally.

Great, complex, layered film with a director who has an eye for getting the message across.

You Can Count On Great Acting
1 January 2001
I wanted to see something different. I wasn't in the mood for anything too mainstream, so I thought about this little movie that I'd read some good things about and decided to go see it.

You Can Count On Me is different....different in a good way. It's very unpredictable and carries some of the best acting this year. It's a simple, realistic story brought to life by great performances. Linney and Ruffalo were terrific as two siblings who go at it all in the name of love. Broderick plays those needy, "I hate my life" characters to the best of his ability and never falls short....remember him in Election? And Culkin was as good as his older more famous brother...what's his name?

Linney's comedic timing also made the film spunkier.

Great film, Good story.

An E For Effort
26 December 2000
What is the true test of whether a movie is good or not you ask? If I look at my watch or even think about my watch once, the film is no good. Let's see, this film was exactly 111 minutes. Need I say more?

I haven't been to see a Sandra Bullock flick in a while. Going out to see her last 2 films, Gun Shy and 28 Days respectively, haven't exactly been on the top of my To Do list. But Miss Congeniality LOOKED funny. And then for god sakes, she got a Golden Globe Nomination, so maybe it really was funny. It wasn't. I dosed off a few times, checked my watch, and thought about the things I had to do before X-mas all while I sat in the theater. I'll admit there were some funny moments: It was the moment at the end when the New York contestant began to act a fool when she didn't win the title....Oh wait that's just one.

Anyway, I think the premise was a good idea, but the "fall down every 10 minutes because I'm a dork like Steve Urkel" routine gets a little dry after about 3 times.

Sandra is a great actress and comedian. She also needs the right script, director, and supporting players to make it a total success. Not a totally bad movie, but a slight disappointment.

Cast Away (2000)
9/10
Tom Hanks Does It Again....
26 December 2000
Great movie. Even though it will become a commercial success, Cast Away, has this understated edginess to it. It's by far the most captivating performance by Hanks since his Oscar winning turn in Philadelphia. He is by far, one of the best actors alive.

This movie has everything: Slapstick comedy, drama, action, oh, and did I forget to mention Tom Hanks? He does a terrific job of making the audience feel what he feels. I felt like I was on that island with him. And then when 4 years had passed and I saw his frail body on the screen, my heart ached. Never in my entire movie going experience had I empathized with a character so much. You know you're watching a terrific artist when they say and do very little and still seem to ignite the screen. His subtlety was brillant and so was the film.

Carrey Sets High Standards That The Film Doesn't Meet
27 November 2000
Jim Carrey gives a fantastic performance that I'm sure will earn him his third consecutive Golden Globe award. He is unstopable and it says a lot about his talent when you know he is the only one who can play the part.

I was looking forward to the film so much, that after sitting in the theater for almost an hour, I forgot that this was a movie geared towards kids. The plot was very cheesy except for the flashback sequence that revealed why the Grinch is so, well, grinchy. And what was with the flavorless sub-plot that involved Cindy Lou's mother and the house lighting feud she had going on with Christine Baranski's character? What ever became of that?

Any who, the movie was a little lame, but Carrey was flawless.

10/10-for Carrey

5/10-for the movie

Unbreakable (2000)
I Couldn't Get The Sixth Sense Out Of My Head!!
23 November 2000
First off I'll say that this is not a bad movie. It's pretty good, actually. It's timing is just off. Had Unbreakable been released before that movie about the kid who sees dead people, we'd all be praising this one and critically panning The Sixth Sense. Shyamalan was caught in between a rock and a hard place. And so was I. The whole time I watched the film I couldn't stop thinking about The Sixth Sense

Undoubtedly, Unbreakable is similar to The Sixth Sense. The mood, the score, the editing, the slow paced storytelling, the surprise ending, and Bruce Willis' performance are all remeniscent of the creepy blockbuster. That one fault, lingered in the back of my mind the whole time I watched the movie.

I do credit Unbreakbale for it's intensity. I was drawn in by Samuel L. Jackson's powerhouse performance...He is truly great. Bruce Willis duplicated his mello Sixth Sense performance, which was ever-to-familiar but definitely appropriate.

I too gasped at the ending, and on my way back to my car, realized that this movie was a comic book story. Jackson's character makes that idea cleverly clear at the end...Good vs. Evil, Mr. Glass, Unbreakable....again, Jackson's performance was stellar.

The film was thrilling and ended so unexpectedly, that I couldn't believe the movie was over...I wanted more, but Shyamalan told me everything I need to know...

This movie Rocks
7 November 2000
FUN FUN FUN!!!!

That's the only way you can describe this bubbly, action-packed, comical film. Cameron, Drew, and Lucy rock as the smart, sexy, bombshells who fight crime for their invisible boss Charlie.

I had high expectations for this movie and they were all met. It's a fun movie, not made out to take itself too seriously. The Matrix like FX were easy on the eyes and the somewhat stale and corny story line only made the film funnier....It really didn't take itself that serious.

You can't leave this film expecting a tour de force like American Beauty or Being John Malkovich. IT'S JUST A FUN FILM GUYS.....Lighten up.

After I finished viewing the film, I felt like doing some Taebo...those girls really kicked ass.

Can't wait for the Sequel!!!!!!!

I left the theater...wanting to Pay It Forward
21 October 2000
I've been wanting to see this film for sometime. I enjoy Spacey and Osment respectively. Hunt is still growing on me. I did enjoy this film. I thought the concept and the message was originally put together. It felt good to see a positive movie. A good positive movie that isn't cheesy.

Osment shines as the boy with all the hope. Spacey never ceases to amaze me and continued to do so with his subtle, tense performance.

There were some problems. The score did resemble American Beauty's (but I liked it) and I did have a problem with the stereotypical black person language...It was fine but a bit stretched!

The movie seems to be taking a lot of slack for the ending but I found it logical and appropriate. And I don't think Leder put it in just to make everyone weep, even though it did just that to me. Overall, I absolutely enjoyed it. It made me feel like I needed to do something, that I could make a difference.

And if that is the intent it deserves all the praise in the world.

Osment gives another Oscar worthy performance and the screenplay deserves a nod as well.

Overall, one hell of a movie 9/10

The Best Film I Think I've Ever Seen!!!!!!
22 March 2000
I can't even go into words about how this film moved me. The themes of hope and friendship are the powerful strings that tugged at my heart through out. A flawless masterpeice with excellent performances by Freeman and Robbins. For years, I've heard a lot of talk about this movie. Damn, I'm glad I finally saw it.

10 out of 10....to say the least.

Fargo (1996)
Very Funny At Times...But What Was All The Hype About???
16 March 2000
Fargo this and Fargo that. All I kept hearing was how good this film was and then I saw the ratings it was given and the Oscars it was nominated for and won and thought to myself, "I must really be missing something." So I go to Blockbuster pop it in and I admit I did have a few good laughs and every now and then I wanted to know what was going to happen next but over all the movie wasn't anything extroadinary.

Don't get me wrong, I really don't prefer the $150 million action flicks. I'd pick Magnolia over Independence Day anytime but this movie didn't stand up to the buzz it recieved. Again, I didn't think that the film was bad at all. It was highly enjoyable, the acting was flawless, and I may even watch it again but it fell short of what I expected.

Great movie but totally overhyped if you ask me.

A Sexy, Erotic, Fantasy.......
11 March 2000
I'm still in the wake of trying to figure out exactly what this movie was about. I do understand the whole thing about the wife belting out her secrets about a navy officer and I do understand the husband's feelings of embarrassment as she tells him and how he goes out into the city trying to "get back at her" so to speak. But, what happens after that?...I really couldn't tell you.

What I did love about the film was the sex appeal. It has this erotic undertone that exudes passion and love... maybe even more because the two are married in real life. Seeing Cruise never go through with it made the movie explode with this tantalizing restraint. That along with the flawless score, made the 2 hour plus movie bareable and not bad at all.

I just wished I could have seen the movie uncut...maybe then, would I have gotten something out of it that I didn't this time around.

Magnolia (1999)
What can I really say???
29 January 2000
I've been reading all the comments made by others who have seen this artistic piece of work called Magnolia. Everyone opinions differ and that's a good thing. We can only take from a movie what we get. So don't fret if everyone doesn't have the same view point as you.

For me? Well, I'm still trying to figure lots of things out. However, I can say that the film is excellent in that it's different. I'm a big fan of PT Anderson because of the way he tells a stroy, unlike anyone else. I'm not going to sit here and brag to you how intellectually sound this film is or go off on tangents about how it being a masterpiece unlike anything I've ever seen because I don't know that yet. But I find the film fascinating just because I know it's telling a message and it has a theme. What that message and theme is, I really don't know, but it's real, truthful, and unquestionable. Overall, it's a reprensentation of life as either I see it, you see it, or PT Anderson sees it. And that, to me, is what matters the most. All life really is is different people, different stories, different experiences, different goals, and different feelings. And as we travel the road of life, sooner or later, we come to realize that we are not so different after all. And in the end, when it's usually too late, we realize love is all we really need. If you think back to all of the relevant characters in the film, what was the one issue each one had with themselves? Issues of love! With it, we all have something in common, without it, we are all different, lonely idividuals looking up for an explanation when things fall down.

Congratulations to the cast of this thought-provoking film. This three-hour plus film would not have been bearable with anyone else. Cruise and Macy made me sit up in my seat with their flawless performances. And of course who could go wrong with Moore? Her work is becoming revolutionary of our time.

And most important...PT Anderson, who scares me with his brillance. You are right on the mark!

And that's what I got out of the film. And it's not a matter of me being correct, because it's what I feel, not what I know.

Try to remember that the next time you see a film.

Until then...

I thought this was supposed to be scary
29 October 1999
Okay, enough is enough!! The Haunting sucked, the Blair Witch Project was way over-hyped, and now The House on Haunted Hill isn't very haunting at all. What gives? The story line got very shacky in the middle of the film.....and from then on all that reminded me that I was actually watching a horror film were the shrills and thrills that echoed through out this not-so-haunted house......PLEASE I hate to put all my hopes on Scream 3, especially after the sequal sucked...but hey it can't get any worse that this....Or can it....

The Most Thought-Provoking Movie I've Seen This Year!!
3 October 1999
While watching this dark comedy I found myself in the middle of the best movie of the year.

The different stories behind these 6 "perfect" suburbians is beautifully told and amazingly realistic.

To me, the movie centers around Lester Burnham's need to just be happy. It takes over his mind his soul and all outer limitations are crossed to get there.

Kevin Spacey and Annette Bening deserve Oscar gold for their artistic performances in this film that is so real....it's scary.

Don't be surprised if we see American Beauty take the coveted, last, Oscar of the millennium, for Best Picture.

A sizzling portrayal of a star who fizzled out before her time
21 August 1999
By far, a tour de force for Berry. She gives a more than convincing portrayal of the first black woman ever to be nominated for a Best Actress Oscar. Not only is Berry's performance breathtaking, but the fact that the story is based on actual events, made my lungs collapse as well.

Too bad Dandridge didn't make the Emmy nomination deadline.....Berry would have taken home the award that both her and Dandridge deserve(d).

Explosive thriller that leaves you breathless
1 August 1999
Screenwriter Ehren Kruger's script is Oscar worthy. Arlington Road did something to me that a movie hasn't done in years....it left me begging. Begging for a reason, begging for an explanation...begging for more of this complex thriller.

Each beed of sweat that rolled down Jeff Bridge's face, made me yearn and anticipate the out-of-this-world ending that rose way above my expectations.

Go see it!

By far the best comedy of the summer!
17 June 1999
Mike Meyers makes his return as Austin Powers, Dr. Evil (my personal favorite) and the newly casted and HEAVILY rated Fat Bastard. Mike Meyers takes his comedic roots to a new level with this outrageously funny, gross out comedy.

Move over Mary.........cause here comes Austin!!!!!!!

I give it a 7.9 out of 10.

The greatest of Disney's animated classics
30 May 1999
What happens when you mix a curious mermaid, a demanding father, a reggae-singing crab, and an evil squid? You get the greatest Disney film ever made.

The Little Mermaid is my favorite animated movie. Even after nine ten years, I continue to throw the tape in, when I need a good story and some great songs to hum too.

The Little Mermaid, is by far the greatest Disney film of all time!
