The Green Mile (1999)
Truly amazing
The Green Mile was one of the best books I have read in years. This movie is more faithful to its source material than any I have ever seen. I can't count as high as the number of Oscars it deserves -- and as to who ought to get the award for best supporting actor, I am clueless. There have to be six worthy performances for that award alone. The Green Mile is nearly flawless and it took me twenty minutes to begin to be able to breathe normally when it was over. An absolute must see.
The Big Brass Ring (1999)
I thought we finally had a wonderful new writer...
I happened on The Big Brass Ring on Showtime while channel surfing, knowing none of its background. I commented to my wife about the wonderful acting and stunning script. I was a little embarrassed to find out it was written by Orson Welles, but I would pay that price anytime to see such a wonderful film.
Does Welles have any other material hidden somewhere? One can only hope. In the meantime, if you haven't seen The Big Brass Ring, do see it: superb acting, terrific direction, a thought-provoking plot. TV isn't all drivel, after all.
The Postman (1997)
Not the book, but a very good movie
I saw the movie before I read the book. I think I understand why the critics didn't like the movie -- it bears shockingly little resemblance to the book. Critics need to say bad things in order to look smart, and this was easy for them to jump on. All that aside, the book is a 10, one of the best sci-fi books ever written. The movie is not as good as the book AND it is not very much LIKE the book. But it is still a very entertaining and uplifting saga of one good individual and a very powerful would-be oppressor and his entire army. The book had a totally different point to make, but Kostner did a good job making his point in the film. Read the book AND see the movie.
