What a movie !!

Another great movie from Basu Bhattaharya. This movie propounds the Indian thought that the place of a wife is in her husband's home and her happiness lies in remaining happy with her man whatever the past may hold.

Saudamini, played by Shabana, is in love with Narendra (Vikram) but is married off to Ghanshyam (Girish Karnad). She remains unhappy in her husband's home as her heart is still with Narendra. Narendra also wants her to come with him and she even agrees to to it. The film deals with this rather controversial theme very sensitively.

The music is superb with a only a few but very good songs. "Ka Karoon Sajni (What should I do My Friend)" and "Pal Bhar Mein Yeh Kya Ho Gaya (What has this happened within the moment)" take the cake.

The cast guarantees excellent portrayal of all characters. Even Vikram manages to pull off a good performance. Dheeraj Kumar is delightful in a lovable cameo.

Watch this movie and you will be compelled to think twice about what happiness and content in a married life means.

A great movie - must-see

What more can you ask for in a movie? A rich story, excellent acting, great songs, technically superb. The story is about Radha played by Nargis who works hard to bring up her two children, played by Sunil Dutt and Rajender Kumar, after her husband goes away. Birju played by Dutt is the more flamboyant one who gets in trouble with the village Lala's daughter and runs away and becomes a dacoit. The end is the most unexpected part of the movie.

Made on a large canvas, this movie runs like an epic. This Mehboob Khan's effort came very close to winning the Oscar for the Best Foreign Film. During the shooting of this film Dutt saved Nargis from a fire and soon after that they were married.

Naushad's music is another highlight of the film with some great songs like "Duniya Mein Hum Aaye Hain", "Nagri-Nagri Dware-Dware", "Holi Aayi Re Kanhai", "Tan Rang Lo Ji" etc.

All in all, this is possibly one of the best Hindi films ever made.

Great movie with fantastic songs

This is one of those movies which leaves you feeling good and on a high. The simple setting of a village with absolutely real-life characters make this movie a viewing pleasure.

The plot is very simple. Vijayendra Ghatage is an engineer who is about to come to a village for some construction work. A.K. Hangal and Dina Pathak want to marry off their daughter Zarina Wahab to him. But instead of the engineer, the supervisor Amol Palekar lands up and is mistaken for the engineer. The parents encourage the meetings of Zarina and Amol. Amol is a lover of music. He teaches Zarina music and in the process they fall in love. But then Vijayendra comes on the scene and he is ready to marry Zarina....

It is the presentation, characterisation and acting where the movie really shines. Amol is great as ever. Dina Pathak is delightful as the mother who is in a dilemma over allowing her daughter to meet Amol openly. Zarina also gives an excellent performance.

The movie has excellent songs which are largely based on classical Indian music, notable being "Jab Deep Jale Aana", "Gori Tera Gaon Bada Pyara", "Aaj Se Pahle" etc. Yesudas enthralls with his rich mellifluous voice in these songs. You can't find a Best of Yesudas album without these songs from this film.

All in all, a light, heart-warming movie which is a must-see for every hindi film buff. It is a far cry from the regular stuff churned out by Bollywood. Excellent stuff!!
