Walking Shadow (2001)
Any Spenser is a good Spenser
I can enjoy pretty much any adaption of a Parker novel and Walking Shadow lends itself pretty well. The major issue for these movies is casting. I'm getting used to Mantegna as Spenser but don't think I'll ever come to terms with Harden as Susan Silverman. I think that in Susan, Parker has created a character that cannot be satisfactorily duplicated. Also, Ernie Hudson is NOT Hawk. I always thought Dennis Haysbert would be a good match. Just an opinion.
All in all, a good effort. Here's hoping A & E keeps putting these out.
Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999)
The definition of uneven
This movie proves that if you throw enough "gags" out for an audience to consider, enough will stick to make them think they've had a good time. If you were to add up the pluses and minuses in this movie it would probably be a wash. The laughs are enough to recommend it, however. Too bad Mike Myers felt compelled to push the envelope well past the line of sophomoric humor in an attempt to "top" his first effort. It's okay Mike. We liked it just fine. Now quit while you're ahead and spare us "Shagfinger".
The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer (1947)
Not "Arsenic and Old Lace, but . . ."
A pleasant Grant comedy with a grown up Shirley Temple. Nothing terribly original, but a pleasant diversion. Cary's entertaining as always and Myrna Loy fits the judge role nicely. Hard to believe that this movie, in which Shirley Temple plays a high schooler, was actually toward the tail end of her film career. What a waste that we didn't see more of her later.
